The Big Lift, a collective impact initiative that seeks to increase kindergarten readiness and improve third grade reading proficiency in San Mateo County, is recruiting to fill one Intern Fellow II vacancy.

The Human Services Specialist (Family Partner) will work as part of a team with counselors and case managers to provide services to parents and their children in Fremont, Newark and Union City. AHA is seeking a Facilities and Maintenance Technician I to perform a range maintenance and alterations on Housing Authority buildings and facilities, HVAC, and other electrical and mechanical systems; identifying and evaluating construction-related problems; performing installation and repairs on plumbing systems; conducting property inspections, and coordinating with vendors on maintenance replacement and repair projects. DEFINITION

 

Under supervision, performs electrical, preventive and corrective maintenance, modifications of existing equipment and the installation of new electrical equipment used within the wastewater treatment plant, the wastewater lift stations and the potable water pump stations and equipment; on 24-hour emergency call for electrical repairs; and performs other duties as assigned.

 

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

 

Installs, repairs, maintains or replaces electrical equipment including but not limited to, motor control centers, generators, switchgear panels, variable frequency drives, pump controllers, large distribution breakers, motors of various sizes and voltages, ground fault systems, magnetic and solid state starters, building lighting and power, HVAC equipment, reduced voltage transformers, SCADA control systems, fused disconnects, and various size and types of lighting. Shall review plans and specifications, may inspect electrical components to be installed during new construction, equipment replacement or modification. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Knowledge of: Electrical tools including but not limited to, basic hand and power tools, electric cable puller (mule), conduit benders (both hand and hydraulic), MEGGER, phase rotation meter, VOM meter, hydraulic knock-out tool, hand and power threading equipment, accepted safety practices and standards related to both personnel practices and proper handling and installation of equipment and systems. National Electrical Code; installation, operation and maintenance of motor control centers, power generation equipment, pumping control equipment with all types of motors.

 

Ability to: Read and interpret electrical diagrams, plans and electrical codes. Instruct others in preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance of electrical equipment and of safe work practices.  Work independently and with non-skilled electrical personnel.  Interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

Physical Requirements:  Moderate and sometimes strenuous exertion required including crawling, stair climbing, lifting, carrying and/or handling up to 50 pounds for 30 minutes.  Work in confined areas and wear protective garments.  May work in conditions which require exposure to noise, noxious odors, gases and contact with wastewater.

 

Experience: Four years of journey-level electrical trade experience involving work performed in conformance with standard codes and both single and three phase equipment.  Experience with water or wastewater utility systems desirable.

 

Education:  Graduation from high school, or equivalent.  Continuing education in related subjects is desirable.

Role description

Under general supervision, an Employee Assistance Counselor provides clinical assessment, short-term counseling and referral of City and County employees experiencing difficulties related to personal or work-related problems, such as stress, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, emotional concerns or relationship issues. A Counselor conducts seminars, trainings, and consultations on issues related to personal and organizational wellness; prepares records and reports; and performs related duties as required.

Typical duties include, but are not limited to:

1. Provides clinical assessment, short-term counseling and referral services to employees of the City and County who are experiencing difficulties related to personal or work-related problems, such as stress, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, emotional concerns or relationship issues; provides counseling of family members and significant others as appropriate.
2. Facilitates seminars and trainings for employees and management on personal, interpersonal and organizational issues such as the effective management of stress, anger and emotions, workplace negativity and dealing with difficult people.

The Department

The Aging and Family Services Division (AFS) of HSD specifically supports older residents and their caregivers to live active, healthy lives in the Tri-City community. With input from local, older adults (age 55 years+) as our guide, the AFS team provides a continuum of supportive services, from health promotion activities to home-based end of life care. AFS has a Senior InfoLine that is answered in 4 languages (Farsi, English, Spanish and Chinese) that is often an entry point.

DefinitionUnder administrative direction from the Human Services Director, plans, organizes and directs a Division of the Human Services Department which provides specialized family services; and serves as a member of the department's management team.

Class Characteristics
This professional management classification in the Human Services Department may be assigned as Youth and Family Services Administrator, Aging and Family Services Administrator or Family Resource Center Administrator. Incumbent follows general guidelines or professional and administrative standards in accomplishing assignments; it is characterized by the responsibility to develop and implement mental and physical health and other social services that support self-sufficiency, strengthen families, help children achieve their optimal development, and help older adults remain independent and engaged in the community for as long as possible. Supervision for the Family Resource Center Administrator is jointly provided by the Human Services Director and leadership team of the Family Resource Center. Review of work is occasional or on a problem basis with incumbents presenting alternative courses for policy decisions. Routine and unusual problems are handled within the context of general plans, broad policies, budgetary limitations and professional standards. Successful performance is measured by total results. The Vocational Rehabilitation Services (VRS) team of the Human Services Agency (HSA) of San Mateo County is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Rehabilitation Production Supervisor I/II. This current vacancy is a permanent position assigned in Catering Connection and/or the WorkCenter program. The position is a shared assignment and will be scheduled weekly to work in Catering Connection and/or the WorkCenter. The schedule of this position will vary and include weekends depending on the needs of the departments.
 
Under supervision, Rehabilitation Production Supervisor I/II will perform a variety of support activities and supervise the operation of Vocational Rehabilitation Services’ Catering Connection, and WorkCenter. In addition, this position is responsible for: Instructing, training and supervising the work of support staff and individuals with emotional and physical disabilities or others with barriers to employment by observing, evaluating and reporting on progress, attendance and employment potential of clients and preparing written evaluations.

 Examples of Duties for the WorkCenter may include, but limited to, the following:

• Instruct and supervise the work of economically disadvantaged and emotionally and physically disabled individuals with vocational problems.
• Select and assign clients to workshop activities based on their needs and capabilities; reassign work as necessary.
• Instruct and train clients in various work and work-related behaviors and skills.
• Observe, evaluate, and report on progress, attendance, and employment potential of clients; prepare written evaluations.
• Model appropriate work behaviors and attitudes.
• Confer with counselors to coordinate client programs, determine needs and capabilities of clients and handle client problems on the work floor; participate in client goal planning.
• Work with clients to change inappropriate employment behaviors.
• Maintain order on workshop floor.
• May supervise work performed at off-site locations.
• May assist in designing and making jigs, tools, and fixtures.
• Perform or supervise minor repair and routine maintenance of shop tools and equipment; receive and/or loads goods.
• Supervise the use of equipment for safe and proper operation; enforce safety regulations; check on and report safety violations.
• Maintain quality assurance according to procedures.
• Complete evaluations on trainee’s progress.

 

Qualifications

Food Services Option

Knowledge of:

• Kitchen cleaning and sanitation methods.
• Basic arithmetic.
• Dietetic principles.
• Proper lifting techniques.
• Operation and care of kitchen equipment.
• Safety principles and methods including rules of first aid.

Skill/Ability to:

• Instruct and supervise others.
• Develop creative, nutritious menus.
• Keep records and progress reports.
• Handle emergency situations and work rapidly under pressure.
• Plan and operate a small scale food service facility.
• Deal effectively and professionally with a wide range of individuals.

 
Warehouse Option

Knowledge of:

• Computerized inventory control, electronic counting scales, automated shipping systems.
• Proper methods of storekeeping, including the maintenance of records of incoming and outgoing supplies.
• Taking of inventories and proper storage of various supplies.
• Modern office procedures and practices.
• Safety principles and methods including rules of first aid.
• Basic mathematics.

• Operate forklifts and other materials handling equipment.
• Maintain records and prepare reports.
• Instruct, train and supervise subordinate personnel.

Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:
 

Rehabilitation Production Supervisor I: Experience working with staff involved in product or service delivery operation.

 

Rehabilitation Production Supervisor II: Two years of experience in an industrial production operation or rehabilitation WorkCenter including a supervisory assignment.

Anyone may apply. Current County of San Mateo and County of San Mateo Superior Court of California employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, Confidential and Management extra-help/limited term, and SEIU or AFSCME represented extra help/limited term positions prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination.. Responses to the supplemental questions must be submitted in addition to our regular employment application form.

The examination will consist of an interview (weight: 100%), which may include the evaluation of a brief written and/or performance exercise given immediately preceding the interview. Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or a screening committee may select those applicants whose education and/or experience appear to best meet the needs of the position. Because of the screening process, not all applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination.
