This is the trainee level class in the Firefighter series, responsible for becoming proficient in the understanding of lifesaving and firefighting methods within the SJFD. Through a specific program comprised of general and specialized education, focused training including extensive hands-on experience, Firefighter Recruits will learn diverse tasks, policies, procedures and standards within the SJFD. Incumbents will learn techniques in emergency medical services, rescue work, firefighting and other emergency services. Duties may involve considerable physical exertion and potential risk to health and safety. Overview:
The Grants and Claims Management Unit with Valley Water is the centralized unit for seeking and managing grants brought in to help fund Valley Water projects. Core components of this work that this position will support include pre-award (seeking grant opportunities, helping to write applications, working with project teams), compliance (ensuring Valley Water can meet state and federal grant terms and conditions, including The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) standards, working with Procurement), and communications with project teams, management, and the Board of Directors. The Position

Job Description

This position performs preventive, routine and emergency maintenance and repair of a variety of heavy and light industrial and marine equipment, related systems and components. The incumbent will operate precision equipment and respond to trouble calls associated with the Port's ferry terminal systems, boats, sewer pumps and other Port related equipment. The nature of this work requires sustained physical effort frequently under adverse weather conditions and/or working in confined spaces. The incumbent may be required to work alternative shifts in order to do tide-dependent work.

• Supports the preparation, issuing, and evaluation of solicitations related to Energy, Resource Adequacy and Renewable Energy Credits.

• Performs preventive maintenance functions on Exhaust Fans, HVAC Package units and Air Handlers.
• Clean HVAC Cooling Towers and Mechanical Rooms.
• Install V-belts on HVAC Equipment.
• Uses general carpentry, mechanical and hand tools such as power saws, hand saws, drills, pliers, wrenches, hammers, screwdrivers, ladders and other tools and equipment.
• Installs air filters in various types of air conditioning equipment.
• Cleans aluminum finned condenser and evaporator coils.
• Performs minor semi-skilled carpentry and plumbing repair work.
• Maintains database records of their daily work with the Departments inventory management system.

This position may require working some weekends and/or holidays. Ability to perform the essential functions of this position will be determined by a post-offer medical examination conducted by City of San Jose Employee Health Services.

The HVAC SHOP maintains all City-Wide Facilities, including Police Buildings. The San Jose Police Department requires all civilians working at their facilities pass a background check and obtain a Civilian Police Badge. The Maintenance Worker I candidate will be expected to apply for and successfully pass the Police Department background check, to successfully pass their probationary period.

ABOUT THE POSITION

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual who possesses both the interpersonal skills and technical expertise needed to perform a range of moderately difficult combination inspections (building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical) of a variety of residences, commercial and industrial buildings.
