The County of San Mateo is seeking experienced Custodians/Housekeepers to be responsible for custodial/housekeeping duties in and around County buildings and healthcare facilities.
 
The ideal candidate will have at least two years of hands-on work experience performing the duties listed below in a government, hospital, locked facility, or similar facility.  Experience stripping and waxing floors is highly preferred.
 
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

• Work from a prepared work schedule and sweep, scrub, strip, wax, buff, polish, and vacuum floors 
• Sweep, shampoo, and vacuum carpeted areas; remove spots, spills, and debris from floors 
• Dust and polish furniture, woodwork, screens, fixtures, blinds, louvers, and equipment 
• Clean walls, woodwork, and hand rails 
• Clean glass, metal, and wood doors, windows, and counters 
• Clean elevators, escalators, phone booths, and drinking fountains 
• Perform restroom service including cleaning and sanitizing waste receptacles, dispensers, walls, partitions, mirrors, urinals, and commodes; sweeping, mopping, or machine scrubbing floors and restocking supplies 
• Pick up papers and other refuse on grounds and sweep walks and entrances 
• Move furniture, supplies, and equipment 
• Assist in moving or rearranging chairs, tables, desks, furniture, and other equipment 
• Clean and polish metalwork 
• Empty, clean, and reline waste containers 
• Report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards 
• Secure buildings by closing windows, locking doors, and turning out lights and/or by checking same 
• Make or assist with miscellaneous minor repairs or adjustments in equipment 
• Maintain custodial equipment and supplies 
• Raise and lower flags
• Perform related duties as assigned

Please Note: Custodians/Housekeepers are required to work at various locations throughout the County of San Mateo (County Facilities/Buildings, San Mateo Medical Center, Maple Street Jail, Hall of Justice, Maguire Correctional Facility, and Youth Services Center) and during various shifts (days, evenings, holidays, and/or weekends).

Custodians working for the Department of Public Works are required to have a class C California driver license or its equivalent.

Important: Candidates may be required to complete an extensive security clearance package and undergo a thorough background check conducted by the County of San Mateo Sheriff's Office prior to hiring. The selected candidate must be cleared to work in and around a locked facility and detainees.
 
The current vacancies are in the Department of Public Works and the San Mateo Medical Center, including full-time and extra-help positions. The eligible list generated from this recruitment may also be used to fill future extra-help, term, unclassified, and regular classified vacancies.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

• Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is one year of custodial experience.

Licensure/Certification:

• Possession of a class C California driver license or equivalent is required for Custodians working for the Department of Public Works.

 
Knowledge of:

• Proper use of cleaning materials, chemicals, and disinfectants
• Modern tools, equipment, and techniques used in cleaning large multi-purpose facilities
• Proper methods for clean-up and disposal of hazardous wastes

Skill/Ability to:

The Department of Public Works is seeking well-qualified candidates for the position of Stationary Engineer II.

Stationary Engineer II is the journey-level classification and incumbents are responsible for a wide variety of repair and maintenance work in the areas of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, emergency power systems, boiler equipment and piping repair, Building Automation systems, and miscellaneous equipment repair.
 
In addition to the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties of this job, the ideal candidate will also have:

• At least three years of journey-level experience as a Stationary Engineer
• A minimum of three years of journey-level experience in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems  
• Extensive knowledge and experience working with boiler and HVAC systems 
• Proficient in a wide variety of installations and repairs on plumbing, gas system piping, chiller/boiler piping, and wastewater systems, including the ability to operate a large sewer snake  
• The ability to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain a variety of equipment including air conditioning, electric motors, heating units, heat pumps, light commercial furnaces, burners, Fresh Air and exhaust fans, economizers and humidifiers is essential  
• Experience in energy management and computer-controlled systems is highly desired
• Experience with Fire Alarm testing, troubleshooting, and NFPA codes
• Backflow Prevention Tester certification is highly desired

 
Experience in a hospital or healthcare setting is highly preferred.  Employees must be willing to work evenings, weekends, and alternate shifts.

• Adjust and calibrate boiler burners and controls

QUALIFICATIONS

Licensure/Certification:

• Possession of a class C California driver license or equivalent
• Must obtain and maintain jail security clearance
• Universal Certification in Freon recovery upon hire
• Obtain Backflow Certification within six months of hire or promotion to Level II and maintain certification
• If designated as a water treatment operator, possession of or ability to obtain a valid Grade II Water Treatment Operator Certification issued by the State of California within six months of employment is required

 
Education:

• Completion of courses related to maintenance, installation, and repair of electrical, HVAC, plumbing, refrigeration, and power equipment

 

Experience:

• Two years of journey level experience as a stationary engineer or equivalent AND demonstrated experience in maintaining, installing, and repairing electrical, HVAC, plumbing, refrigeration, and power equipment in a large building, plant, or vessel. Two years of experience can be substituted with completion of an apprenticeship program.

The Superior Court of California, County of San Mateo, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Court Facilities Supervisor.
 
The Court Facilities Supervisor plans, organizes, and oversees the Court Custodian Staff, including evaluation of performance.  In addition, the Court Facilities Supervisor provides various services for the Court, including but not limited to, maintenance of the exteriors and interiors of Court facilities, performance of minor maintenance, transportation and delivery of furniture, equipment, and court files, and reconfiguration of workstations. 
 
The Court Facilities Supervisor is a supervisory level classification.  The incumbent will have full supervisory authority for all Court Custodian staff and will have supervisory responsibility over work that is physically demanding in the movement of moderately heavy and bulky materials. 
 
The Court Facilities Supervisor reports directly to the Court Facilities Manager.

 

Examples of Duties:

• Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  Assists Court Facilities Manager with overseeing the facilities maintenance needs of the Court’s facilities
• Works with Judicial Council facilities staff and vendors to identify, track, and ensure that maintenance is completed
• Coordinates custodial work with building maintenance
• Supervises, plans, coordinates, and assigns work to Court Custodian staff
• Interviews, selects, trains, and evaluates new staff; takes necessary corrective action; resolves employee grievances
• Inspects interior and exterior of buildings and facilities for appearance, cleanliness, and sanitary conditions
• Orders and arranges delivery of supplies and equipment, and ensures they are available as needed
• Checks equipment for safety, and instructs personnel in the safe and proper use of custodial equipment

• Oversees recycling
• May lift, carry, or arrange transport of supplies and equipment that weigh in excess of 75 lbs.
• Prepares and maintains reports and records of maintenance problems, employee timekeeping, and labor hours assigned
• Works flexible hours in order to oversee custodial staff work shifts, as required
• Submits estimates and process comparisons for work projects

Court Reporters stenotype a verbatim record of courtroom proceedings and provide general support to the assigned judge related to the official record.
