Under the supervision of the Fire Marshal, is responsible for performing plan review, inspections, and other duties as required.  The position will also be involved to varying degrees with public education, public relations, exterior hazard abatement, engine company pre-fire planning, record keeping, and report writing.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Receives supervision from the Fire Marshal. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
This position is responsible for the review of plans, to ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local fire safety laws, ordinances, and codes. Although not all inclusive, the following serve to represent the various types of plans to be reviewed: planning applications; applications for the subdivision of land; site plans for access and water supply; building and tenant improvement plans; fire protection systems including fire sprinkler, fire alarm, kitchen hood extinguishing systems; and other types of plan reviews that are part of various fire code permitted activities.  

Other duties include attending meetings with other local government agencies such as planning and building departments, architects, contractors, developers, and the general public.  Utilizes the District’s citation process when appropriate and when other means of gaining voluntary compliance are unsuccessful. This position is responsible for conducting in-house training and updating of field inspection staff members on changes occurring in codes enforced by the District.  This position is also responsible for the formulation of standardized field inspection guidelines and record keeping systems for construction projects. Provides supervision, work direction, and technical assistance as directed. Participates in the code change process at the state and international levels. Utilizes tools and technology identified by the District related to performance of tasks. Supports emergency operations as requested and appropriate.

The position is responsible for performing inspections of both new and existing buildings; witnessing various tests required for sophisticated fire protection equipment and verifying proper operation and compliance with applicable codes and standards; prepares necessary correspondence, reports, and records; with regards to projects, confers with architects, engineers, developers, etc.; attends training courses and meetings of professional organizations as directed; performs surveys of fire hazards and processes complaints; conducts and participates in public education and public relations programs; performs other related duties as directed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience: At least three years’ experience in an organized fire prevention/fire and life safety bureau.  Experience must include involvement in the following duties and responsibilities: fire inspection, plan review, and public education/relations.

Education / Certification: An Associate of Arts/Science Degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university. The successful completion of the following California State Fire Training: Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, Fire Inspector 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D, and Plans Examiner 1A, 1B, 1C, and CA Statues and Regulations.

Desirable Education / Certification: Must have or obtain within one year of employment, certification as an International Code Council Fire Plans Examiner. Employees are required to maintain certification as a condition of employment. Must obtain within three years of employment, California State Fire Marshal certification for Plans Examiner.

License: Possession of a valid California driver’s license.  Maintenance of a valid California driver's license is required as a condition of employment.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Community Development Department (CD) is seeking a value-driven team player to fill the position of Planning Intern. This internship provides an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic college level student seeking broad experience within a dynamic City Planning Division. The Planning Division of the Community Development Department administers City Council policies contained in the General Plan, Zoning Ordinance, and other plans and ordinances. In addition, the Division establishes new and amended rules governing land use and urban design for adoption by City Council from the platform of the General Plan. The Division provides staff, professional service, and administrative support relating to the development, improvement, and preservation of affordable housing opportunities.

The Planning Intern will assist with a number of projects and efforts throughout the Division, which may include:

• Review of minor planning applications and building permits for compliance with required standards
• Prepare approval letters, staff reports, and presentations to the Zoning Administrator
• Shadowing and assisting Planning staff during public counter hours
• Conducting research for various strategic planning studies that could include Redwood City Greater Downtown Area Plan, Historic Preservation Ordinance updates.
• Preparing updates to forms, handouts, and other materials.
• Other appropriate tasks as needed.

 

 

 

Special Requirements:

Must be willing to work at City Hall for a minimum of three business days from Monday- Thursday per week. Of the three workdays, one day must be Tuesday.

The City of Foster City is seeking a dedicated Code Enforcement Officer I with strong interpersonal skills. The Code Enforcement Officer will perform routine and standardized tasks and duties like conducting field checks to uncover possible violations of a variety of City codes and ordinances including zoning, nuisance, property maintenance, and housing. This position will analyze and make recommendations on policy development and investigate possible violations, contact responsible individuals in person and in writing and perform follow-up investigations to see that remedial action has been taken. 

Education and Experience
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education: AA degree from an accredited college; BA degree desirable.

Experience: One year of experience in public contact work involving investigation or inspection skills.

Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training and other job related qualifications. Based upon a review of employment applications received, a limited number of the qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process. 

The process will consist of an Oral Panel Interview. An eligibility list will be established from those who pass the examination process with a score of 70% or higher. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The list will remain in effect for at least one year unless exhausted sooner. 

The department will invite the most qualified candidates from the eligibility list to a final department interview. The CDD will make the hiring decision.

THE POSITION

The current opening is for a per diem position and is under the direction of the Police Dispatcher/Records Supervisor.  The Police Dispatcher/Clerk is a non-sworn technical and complex clerical support classification associated with law enforcement support services assigned in the Town Police Department.  Police Dispatcher/Clerks learn and perform a variety of responsible records management, communications and dispatching duties for emergency and non-emergency calls for service.

• Dispatches police officers to calls for service

The Associate Planner administers complex current and advanced planning activities, including serving as project manager for complex development applications and special projects. SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, provides professional planning staff with a wide variety of technical assistance involving planning, zoning, and land use matters; provides information to developers and the general public; assists with the preparation of comprehensive reports and planning resolutions.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

2. 5. Provide technical assistance to higher level planning staff; research, gather, and compile data and information relevant to environmental and natural resources for use in environmental review documents.

7. Make field inspections on related development proposals, zoning, or other planning matters.
8. Assist in the maintenance of the City land use data base; produce various reports derived from the data base; research and compile data for special projects and various reports.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Additional specialized training in drafting, graphic design, urban planning, surveying, engineering, mathematics, computer science, the physical sciences or a related field is desirable.

Experience:
Two years of work experience, preferably in a municipal setting.

License or Certificate:
Possession of an appropriate, valid driver’s license.
