The City of Pacifica is excited to host approximately seven (7) Summer Interns across multiple departments. This program is designed to provide students with substantive project experience, professional mentorship, and exposure to the inner workings of municipal government. Unlike a general internship pool, each department will recruit for a specific opportunity aligned with its operational needs and professional focus. 

About the Program

The Summer Internship Program was developed in collaboration with the Next Generation Committee, sponsored by the City/County Managers Associations of San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. The program supports the development of emerging professionals and promotes careers in local government.

The Summer Internship Program is tentatively scheduled to run from June 15, 2026 through August 14, 2026 (8 weeks). End date may be adjusted based on the intern's schedule and availability.

Selected applicants will be invited to interview during a tentative window of March 23 – April 3, 2026, with flexibility as needed.

The City anticipates finalizing offers by April 24, 2026 to allow adequate time for summer scheduling and coordination. Internships are part-time (up to 25 hours per week), seasonal, at-will, and non-benefited positions.

About the Community Development/Planning Summer Intern Opportunity

The Community Development Department fosters a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable community through thoughtful planning, innovative development, and responsive public service. The department supports balanced growth, preservation of natural and cultural resources, and equitable access to housing, transportation, and economic opportunity. 

Comprised of the Building, Code Enforcement, and Planning Divisions – Community Development plays a central role in shaping Pacifica’s built environment and long-term vision. This internship is ideal for a student interested in urban planning, land use, sustainability, housing policy, or local government operations. Education & Experience:

• Current undergraduate majoring in Urban Planning, Public Administration, Environmental Studies, Geography, Political Science, Architecture, Civil Engineering, or a related field
• Coursework in land use planning, sustainability, housing policy, public policy, or community development preferred
• Strong interest in local government and community planning
• Prior research, internship, or project experience related to planning, development, or public policy is desirable but not required

Preferred Skills & Knowledge:

• Understanding of basic land use and zoning concepts
• Strong research and analytical skills
• Ability to interpret and summarize technical information clearly
• Professional written and verbal communication skills
• Organizational skills and attention to detail

Public Safety Records Specialist I

The City of Sunnyvale is recruiting for the position of Public Safety Records Specialist I for the Department of Public Safety. The Position

The Planning Intern will support the Community Development Department - Planning Division with research-based projects and assist staff with minor permit review. This internship is designed to provide hands-on experience in municipal planning, exposure to development review processes, and an understanding of how planning policies are implemented at the local level. The intern will work closely with planning staff and gain practical insight into zoning, land use regulations, and public-sector planning operations.

Duties: The primary projects will most likely include the following:

•    Conduct research related to land use planning, zoning regulations, and special planning initiatives
•    Assist planning staff with minor permit review
•    Help organize and analyze planning data, maps, and project materials
•    Prepare summaries and other written materials to support planning projects
•    Assist with updating planning documents, handouts, and internal resources
•    Participate in staff meetings and observe planning processes, as appropriate
•    Provide general administrative support to planning staff as needed

Minimum Qualifications

•    BA/BS Candidate in City Planning, Architecture, Public Policy or a similar discipline

Time Commitment

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, performs a variety of professional planning responsibilities and tasks associated with the coordination and implementation of complex planning projects; performs a variety of duties relating to the collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of technical land use, environmental, zoning, and other City planning data.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the advanced journey level in the professional planning class series. The position is characterized by the level of technical expertise and skill and independent oversight of out of the ordinary, high profile, complex and atypical projects, while functioning as the project coordinator, working with and leading interdisciplinary teams. The Senior Planner is distinguished from the Associate Planner by the complexity and technical expertise required to work on assigned projects.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

1. Coordinate, lead, and perform professional level work in the fields of current and advanced planning, zoning administration, design review, and economic development activities.

The anticipated hiring range for the Senior Planner position is $108,390 - $135,488 with a full salary range up to $162,586. The City typically makes offers within the hiring range based on the candidate’s experience and qualifications.

The City of Thousand Oaks is seeking a high-performing Senior Planner to lead complex development and long-range planning initiatives in one of Southern California’s most desirable communities. The City of Sausalito is seeking candidates who have a passion for planning and building, love people, and are avid learners to fill one full-time Permit Technician position to serve the Planning and Building Divisions in the Community Development Department.

Sausalito employees in this unit work four nine-hour days, Monday - Thursday for 36 hours a week.

The successful candidate will work seamlessly supporting the Planning team, Code Enforcement, the Building Inspector, and Chief Building Official in processing permit applications and in providing public counter services for both the planning and building divisions of the Community Development Department. 

The Building and Planning Permit Technician processes permits, issues over the counter permits, collects fees, advises the public, routes and collects plans to and from appropriate departments or consultants, reviews basic drawings and plans and permit packages for completeness, and performs related administrative/general office support and other duties as assigned to support both the building and planning divisions of the community development department. The class title for this position is Permit Technician.

THE DEPARTMENT
The Burlingame Police Department is a municipal, full service, community oriented department.  We offer a variety of investigative, preventative, and community policing programs to both protect and serve a community that spans five square miles and is home to more than 28,000 residents.

The Burlingame Police Department is divided into two divisions: Operations and Administration.  The force currently consists of 40 police officers, made up of the Chief of Police, 1 Captain, 2 Lieutenants, 6 Sergeants, 6 Corporals, 2 Inspectors, and 22 Patrol Officers.

We are active in county-wide law enforcement efforts by participating in the San Mateo County Gang Task Force, Avoid the 23 (DUI) Task Force, Narcotic Task Force Details, Alcohol Beverage Control Operations, Office of Traffic Safety grants and as Police Academy Training Officers.

POSITION
Burlingame Police Officers are responsible for preventing crime, arresting law violators, directing traffic, etc.  In that capacity, officers may also serve in special assignments such as K-9, detective, SWAT, hostage teams, FTO, and motorcycle patrol.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Patrol various areas within the City by driving a police vehicle or by walking to prevent criminal activity, to enforce various laws, regulations, and codes.

Entry Level - Proof of completing the POST Written Test and Physical Agility Test with a passing score.

Lateral Police Officer - To be considered for a lateral Police Officer appointment, candidates must have prior experience as a sworn law enforcement officer within the past twelve (12) months, including the completion of the field training program and probation period with a law enforcement agency.

POSITION

To perform a variety of routine, non-hazardous and non-sworn law enforcement office and field work.  The purpose of this recruitment is to fill a current vacancy in the Woodland Police Department, as well as establish an eligibility list for future vacancies.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Ideal Candidate will have experience working in a law enforcement agency and/or have substantial professional experience with public interactions. Review Process:  Based on the information provided in the application documents, the best qualified applicants will be invited for further examination.  All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination.  Depending upon the number of applications received, the examination may consist of an application screening, written and/or practical exam, oral interview or any combination thereof.

SALARY

$4,823.53 - $6,156.18 /month
$2,226.24 - $2,841.32 /bi-weekly
$27.83 - $35.52 /hour

Retirement:                          
CalPERS Retirement System (2% @ 60 Formula for Classic CalPERS members and 2% @ 62 Formula for new CalPERS members).  The City does not participate in social security

CalPERS Medical Insurance Plans, including HMOs & PPOs. City gives an allowance toward the cost of insurance. Maximum Family Allowance for 2026: $2,808.66 per month

Additional 2.5% for a Bachelor’s degree
