POLICE SERGEANT- Open Until Filled

The Town of Atherton is approximately five square miles. The City is located in the San Francisco Peninsula in Southern San Mateo County. Atherton is a small, rural, and residential community, with no industrial land-use base. Native trees cover the five miles of town. Atherton’s current population is 7,133 according to the California Census in 2020.       

The Town of Atherton invites you to apply for the position of Police Sergeant. This is an internal and external opportunity. Under the general supervision of the Police Commander, the Police Sergeant plans, schedules, deploys, trains, supervises, and reviews the work of Police Officers and civilian staff.  The Sergeant performs a wide range of patrol and related duties in the prevention of crime, maintenance of public order, protection of life and property, and the enforcement of laws and ordinances.  As part of the Management Team, the Sergeant assists in the preparation of collision investigations and criminal cases, provides courtroom testimony, serves in specialized organizational roles, and assists with various administrative functions. 

A letter of interest and current resume is required. All submissions will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training, and other job-related qualifications.. An extensive background includes a polygraph examination and/or voice stress analysis, completion of the POST Personal History Statement along with medical and psychological exams if selected.

Those meeting the stated qualifications / requirements will be reviewed for selection to participate in the interview and evaluation process for the position. Those selected to participate in the competitive process will be provided with the details of the testing process, which has been tentatively scheduled for the week of August 26, 2024.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities, which would be typically acquired through:

Education & Experience

• Completion of an associate degree and 4 years’ experience as a sworn Police Officer.
• Must have applied for the Intermediate P.O.S.T. Certificate.
• Highly desirable qualifications may include: an Advanced or Supervisory Certificate from P.O.S.T.; bachelor’s degree and/or completion of the Supervisors’ Leadership Institute (SLI) Course.

As a sergeant, you'll be responsible for leading and managing a team of officers. Understanding community policing concepts and strategies is crucial for building positive relationships with community members, addressing local concerns, and implementing proactive crime prevention initiatives. Stay updated on legal developments and ethical standards relevant to law enforcement. This includes constitutional rights, case law precedents, ethical dilemmas, and the ethical responsibilities of police officers. Effective communication is vital for a police sergeant. Have strong verbal and written communication skills to convey information clearly, resolve conflicts, and interact professionally with colleagues, community members, and stakeholders. Have the ability to assess risks, evaluate options, and make informed decisions in high-pressure situations. The City of Marysville is excited to announce the employment opportunity for a Firefighter!  We are seeking energetic and outstanding individuals to join our team. 

This particular recruitment will be a 56 hour (Monday-Friday) position - with the exception of emergencies and Strike Teams.  The base weekly schedule will resemble the following example:

Our Firefighters perform firefighting, rescue, fire prevention, equipment operation and equipment maintenance activities to protect life and property; provide emergency medical and rescue services to the community; and perform related duties and responsibilities as required. The Firefighter classification receives direct supervision from the Fire Captain and may receive functional direction from the Fire Engineer.

This is the entry level paid classification in the field of firefighting. It is distinguished from the classification of Fire Engineer in that the latter is assigned more responsible and varied duties which require knowledge and experience in driving motorized fire fighting vehicles and operating related pumping, hydraulic and other specialized fire equipment.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services department (PRNS) is recruiting to fill a Community Services Supervisor position in the BeautifySJ Program. The BeautifySJ Program is a blight reduction, community beautification and encampment management program within the Community Services Division. The position will report to a Program Manager.

The BeautifySJ Unit is currently looking for a manager to join our dynamic team. This manager will lead a team of full-time staff to coordinate blight reduction efforts, which may include encampment management programs. The position will be housed at the Kirk Community Center (home of BeautifySJ), and will have a hybrid work schedule which includes working in at the site and when necessary, field visits. The position works 40 hours per week with a typical schedule of Monday?Friday, 7:30am?4:30pm but will vary depending on activities and events and will require evening or weekend work.

BeautifySJ Initiative is a dynamic initiative that works to reduce blight and beautify the City via an inter-departmental strategy that coordinates and leverages resources to address blight issues. The Community Services Supervisor would work collaboratively with staff in PRNS, Housing, the Environmental Services Department, Code Enforcement, the Department of Transportation and interjurisdictional partners.

Job duties for the position include but are not limited to:

• Supervising a staff of professional community coordinators, community activity workers and maintenance workers that coordinate and lead blight reduction and beautification programs and projects in the field.
• Manage and coordinate the delivery of services as outlined in established partnership agreements.
• Have the ability to quickly form relationships with internal City Departments and external partners to meet established goals and outcomes.
• Performing important and difficult public contact and liaison work with stakeholders, external partners, and Council Offices.
• Attends and coordinates monthly and/or quarterly BeautifySJ meetings with various internal departments representatives.
• Prepares written reports and presentations and manages overall program performance.
• Develops and implements program performance measures to ensure that program goals and outcomes are being met.

This is the trainee level class in the Firefighter series, responsible for becoming proficient in the understanding of lifesaving and firefighting methods within the SJFD. Through a specific program comprised of general and specialized education, focused training including extensive hands-on experience, Firefighter Recruits will learn diverse tasks, policies, procedures and standards within the SJFD. Incumbents will learn techniques in emergency medical services, rescue work, firefighting and other emergency services. Duties may involve considerable physical exertion and potential risk to health and safety. The Security Manager plays a pivotal role in overseeing and coordinating organization-wide security services at Valley Water. Reporting to the Assistant Officer of Emergency, Security & Safety, this mid-management position is responsible for planning, managing, and executing strategic security initiatives to protect Valley Water's infrastructure, assets and staff, and the community. The Security Manager provides expert guidance, formulates policies, and fosters partnerships with local, county, state, and federal agencies to ensure the highest level of security preparedness. The Security Manager is entrusted with the strategic development and implementation of security programs, plans, and processes. This role requires extensive professional expertise, strong leadership skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
 
 Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Plans, manages, and oversees all functions, operations, and activities of the security unit, including contract security services, physical security systems and technologies, un-housed abatement, shooter awareness program, threat and vulnerability assessments and communication protocols.

• Works collaboratively and engages with appropriate social service and law enforcement agencies to address un-housed abatement in Valley Water creeks and other properties; fulfills security requests to support field work.
• Administers contracts for security and security related services; reviews and evaluates compliance of contractor services with Valley Water’s contract standards and provisions; recommends improvements as required in procedures, techniques, and training.
• Provides staff leadership, oversight, guidance, and daily management of assigned unit; develops and implements goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for assigned programs; manages budgets and forecasts resource needs.
• Plans, directs, coordinates, and reviews the work of assigned staff; provides staff and performance reviews and implements discipline measures and manages the Security Office on-call program.
• Oversees, makes recommendations for, and approves the acquisition of security system hardware and software purchases.

• Establishes ongoing relationships with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, including the Northern California Regional Intelligence Center (NCRIC); monitors notifications of intelligence, information and alerts from the Office of Homeland Security, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Energy, Department of Transportation, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the Awareness National Security Intelligence Reports, as well as the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies and American Water Works Association.

Required License or Certificate

Temporary Maintenance Worker – Parks & Roadsides 

Salary: $20.00/hour

DEFINITION 

Perform a variety of general maintenance services for parks and roadsides and other areas as assigned within the Town.   

• This is a part-time temporary, non-benefitted position. 
• Flexible schedule up to 29 hours per week, which may include weekend work; not to exceed 950 hours per calendar year. The schedule for this position would be Friday through Monday. 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED 

General supervision is received from the Maintenance Supervisor. May exercise supervision of Work Alternative Program participants as assigned. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/DUTIES 

Essential duties are inclusive of, but not limited to the following:  

• Clean up trash in and around Town-maintained park and roadside areas. 
• Operate a variety of equipment, including: half ton and three-quarter ton trucks, Cushman and golf cart (or similar) vehicles, blowers and other two-cycle equipment, and hand tools (i.e., shovel, rake, hoe, etc.). 
• Periodically groom sports fields and bocce ball courts with equipment and/or machinery provided. 
• Prepare baseball fields and bocce ball courts for league play. 
• Assist Maintenance Services personnel on assigned projects.  

• Perform duties within OSHA standards. 

QUALIFICATIONS 

Knowledge of: 

• Construction and maintenance materials, methods, and terminology. 

• The use, purposes and maintenance of hand tools; and the operation of light and moderately heavy power-driven equipment in performing duties. 

Ability to: 

• Understand and follow oral and written directions. 
• Ability to work both in a supervised and unsupervised environment. 
• Perform manual labor for extended periods of time; and operate under tight deadlines. 
• Lift equipment and materials up to 50 lbs. 
• Work flexible hours. 

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION 

Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: 

Education: 

Equivalent to completion of the eighth grade. Graduation from high school or equivalent is preferred. 

Experience: 

Landscape and/or irrigation maintenance experience is desirable. 

LICENCE(S) AND CERTIFICATION(S)

The Yuba County Sheriff’s Department is currently accepting applications to establish an eligibility list for the classification of Correctional Officer.  Under continuing supervision incumbents perform a wide variety of support in two areas: corrections, in which incumbents ensure the security, safety and care of individuals in custody; and bailiff, in which incumbents ensure the safety and security of the courts and their personnel during court proceedings; and perform related work as assigned. Incumbents may be assigned to either County Jail security or Court security.

The Yuba County Sheriff's Department is responsible for the administration of the Yuba County Jail and Jail staff. The Mission of the Yuba County Jail is to provide safe, efficient, humane and secure custody of all persons incarcerated. The county prisoner population is made up of those who are sentenced to county jail, those serving state prison sentences in the county jail under AB109, and those who are pre-trial and who have not yet been sentenced. The jail provides a necessary link in the criminal justice system. There are numerous programs operating within the facility including medical, kitchen, exercise, commissary, visiting, law library, inmate education, work programs, work furlough program, and inmate classification.

THE POSITION

The City of Rocklin is hiring Academy Graduate Police Officers to join the Rocklin Police Department. Academy Graduate Police Officers will join the department and begin an 18-month program to earn their Basic POST certificate. An example of duties that an Academy Graduate Police Officers will perform under close supervision are:

• Assumes responsibility for the preservation of the public peace and the protection of life and property by preventing crime and enforcing all laws.
• Patrols an assigned area in an automobile, other vehicle, or on foot for the purpose of preventing criminal activity and enforcing traffic laws and regulations; issues citations and makes arrests as necessary; responds to calls for protection of life and property and performs enforcement duties.
• Conducts interviews with victims, complainants, witnesses, and suspects; searches crime scenes for evidence; collects, packages, and preserves evidence; testifies in court.
• Detects, pursues, apprehends, and arrests or detains persons involved in crimes or misconduct; confronts and arrests violent combative subjects; books and transports prisoners; serves warrants and subpoenas.
• Conducts preliminary or follow-up investigations; prepares reports on arrests made, activities performed, and unusual incidents observed.
• Directs traffic and/or performs crowd control during special events and in emergency situations.
• Responds to and resolves difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints. • Actively develops and fosters community partnerships and demonstrates integrity and professionalism within the organization and community.
• Represents the City and the department in a courteous, professional manner.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Equivalent to graduation from high school, supplemented by 30 college-level semester units from a regionally accredited educational institution.

Licenses and Certifications

• Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid California Class C Driver License and a satisfactory driving record is required. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
• Certificate of completion from a POST approved California law enforcement academy.

Working Conditions

Must be 21 years of age at time of appointment. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law. Candidates must pass a thorough background investigation.

Must be willing to work emergencies as well as evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Must meet physical, psychological, and background standards established by POST as well as ongoing peace officer requirements pursuant to federal, state, and local legislation. This classification requires wearing respiratory protective equipment at times. When assigned to such work, facial hair must be shaven when it interferes with the safe fitting of respiratory protective equipment. This classification functions as a peace officer within the authority and limits of California Penal Code Sections 830.1(a) and 832.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Applicants will be screened against the minimum requirements. Candidates who meet the minimum requirements will be invited to attend a Physical Agility Test (PAT). 

Those who receive a passing score on the PAT will be invited to a Structured Oral Examination.

Depending on the number of applications received, additional screening may be conducted.
