About the Position:

The Water Resources Intern will work principally on a single, long-term water resources monitoring project. Additional smaller projects may include plant, wildlife, archeology and/or ecological restoration projects. Responsibilities will include gathering field data for the stream sediment study, working with volunteers to assist in data gathering, organizing field work, and analyzing data. Other duties may include GIS mapping, researching and preparing summaries for various projects, and maintaining equipment.

Benefits: This is a temporary position working 20 – 40 hours per week, which will extend up to a total of 950 hours over a 6-9 month period. This is a non-benefited position.

Basic Requirements: Internships are open to applications from current students or recent graduates (within the last 12 months). The intern must be available to work three days a week in July and August in order to complete the necessary fieldwork. Successful candidates will have a background in hydrology, geology, biology, ecology, environmental studies, park management, planning or another related field; and experience with field survey techniques. The water-focused internship requires familiarity with hydrology, sediment transport processes, and geomorphology. Experience with ArcGIS software and mapping natural resources with GPS equipment are a plus. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California driver’s license.

Working Conditions: Work is divided between District administrative offices in a group working environment and field visits to survey, map, and collect field data. Fieldwork is conducted in rural or mountainous District open space areas, which may involve working alone in wild land areas and traversing rough, difficult terrain sometimes with poison oak and dense vegetation.

The Environmental Services Department provides comprehensive and innovative utility services for Sunnyvale’s residents and businesses and facilitates initiatives to achieve the City’s sustainability and zero waste objectives. The department brings together technical, operational, and administrative professional disciplines to form its dedicated and dynamic team. We are currently recruiting for three (3) Environmental Programs Specialists. Two positions are in the Solid Waste and Recycling Division and one is in the Regulatory Programs Division. All positions are responsible for developing, planning, and implementing environmental programs, and will be expected to be knowledgeable of the department’s service areas, regardless of the assigned Division.

Solid Waste and Recycling Division

Environmental Programs Specialists assigned to the Solid Waste and Recycling Division are responsible for coordinating and implementing programs, events and services for commercial and multi-family sites, residents, City employees and schools, with a focus on achieving the City’s Zero Waste goals. This includes encouraging recycling program participation, conducting recycling and waste audits, expanding and overseeing food scraps/organics collection services, and developing or updating policies that support diverting discarded materials away from landfill disposal.

Regulatory Programs Division

Environmental Programs Specialists in the Regulatory Programs Division are responsible for coordinating and implementing programs, events, and services related to storm water and wastewater quality, water conservation, and sustainability initiatives. This includes environmental education at Sunnyvale schools, conducting trash clean ups, and developing broad community marketing for storm water and wastewater education. With the anticipated enhancement of the City’s sustainability programs, Environmental Program Specialists may also support implementation and monitoring of citywide sustainability initiatives.

DEFINITION

Under the direction of the Director of Finance, the Information Services Manager plans, directs, manages, and coordinates the City’s Information Services Division in order to meet the technological needs of the organization.  Essential job functions include but are not limited to directing and performing the operations and activities of the Information Services Division, including network administration, systems analyses, programming, needs assessment, equipment acquisitions, telephone systems management, cost benefit analysis, and needs forecasting.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Coordinate all data processing functions of the City, including systems management, applications development, hardware/software support, PC and communications network support and training, troubleshooting, Geographic Information System development, and staff services.  Develop long-range planning, coordination, security and quality assurance efforts to integrate, coordinate and support all data systems and services within the City, and establish Division goals and objectives.  Evaluate technological and informational needs of the organization, make recommendations, and develop services to accommodate such needs.  Assist in selecting the developing and supervise subordinates.  Review and evaluate employees’ job performance and recommend effective personnel action.  Develop and implement training and customer service programs to effectively and efficiently integrate, coordinate, and support information services activities with other City divisions.  Prepare and administer the Information Services Division budget.  Provide assistance on information services budgetary issues to other impacted divisions.  Prepare effective written reports and oral presentations.  Work with all levels of City employees, City Council members and the public.  Perform other related duties as assigned.

SELECTION PROCESS

All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will have their application scored in a Formula Rate Examination.  The applicant’s experience and education will be evaluated using a pre-determined formula.  Scores from this evaluation will determine applicant ranking and placement on the Employment List.  Supplemental questions will be utilized by the department hiring authority to make interview and selection determinations.  Final appointment is contingent upon a check of past employment references, passing a City-paid fingerprint check and depending on position applied for a pre-employment medical exam and a drug and alcohol screening test.
