SUMMARY

Under general supervision, performs support work related to recreational programs, events, and activities; provides instruction and conducts classes/activities for program participants under the guidance and direction of higher-level staff; prepares buildings, fields, and facilities for scheduled activities or events; provides routine administrative support; and performs related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from higher-level supervisory staff and direction from higher-level staff.  Exercises direction over lower-level staff and volunteers.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the journey-level classification in the Recreation Leader series responsible for performing the full range of recreation program class and activities support.  Incumbents are expected to work independently and exercise judgment and initiative.  Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.  This classification is distinguished from the Recreation Coordinator in that the latter is responsible for all operational activities within an assigned program area, including serving in an ongoing lead capacity over program staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Management reserves the right to add, modifies, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.

1. Conducts and monitors recreational program activities within one or more assigned program areas; performs tasks in accordance with rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
2. Assists with the operation of recreation/sports camps or other large programs; provides instruction and conducts classes/activities for program participants under the guidance and direction of a program leader.
3. Monitors and enforces policies and procedures with respect to participant safety.
4. Inspects program areas and equipment and recommends maintenance and repair as needed.
5. Maintains records of participation and collects participant fees.
6. Assists in the planning and implementation of recreation program activities and classes.
7. Transports, issues, receives, and controls the use of recreational equipment and supplies; monitors equipment inventories and recommends procurement of items as needed.
8. Opens, secures, and cleans program areas before and after program use; prepares program areas for scheduled recreational activities and events.
9. May direct the work of lower level staff assisting in a particular program area.
10. Performs routine administrative duties such as phone and counter reception and registration processing.
11. Assists with District special events as needed.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.

 
ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Incumbents work in both indoor and outdoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels.  May work in controlled temperature conditions, cold and hot temperatures, or inclement weather conditions.  Incumbents will interact with individuals in interpreting and enforcing rules, policies, and procedures.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents may be assigned an irregular work schedule, including weekends, early mornings, evenings, and holidays. 
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to perform medium physical work; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and to operate a vehicle to transport materials and equipment to various sites and offices; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio.  The classification supports indoor and outdoor recreation programs requiring frequent walking, running, conducting exercises, and related physical activities.  Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, calculator, or tools and equipment used in assigned program area.  Program activities may require sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; the ability to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds or higher weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:

• High School Diploma or GED is desirable.
• One year of relevant recreation program support experience.

 
Knowledge of:

• Recreation program services, operations, and activities.
• Relevant laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Proper care and use of recreation equipment, materials, and supplies.
• Principles and practices for providing high level of customer service.
• Principles and practices of recordkeeping.
• Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
• Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications related to the work.

 
Ability to:

• Lead and conduct assigned program classes or activities.
• Maintain the safety of program activities and participants.
• Maintain facilities and equipment in a clean, safe, and secure manner.

• Make basic mathematic calculations with speed and accuracy; count money and make change.

Licenses and Certifications:

• At time of appointment, California Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record maintained throughout employment.
• Completion of American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED training within six months of hire and maintain certification throughout employment.

About the Position

The San Carlos Recreation Department is looking for seasonal summer Recreation Leaders who are, responsible, energetic, and enjoy working outdoors with children in a fun and positive atmosphere.

Recreation Leader positions are fun!  The City works with applicant’s interests and strengths to place them in the appropriate Recreation Leader opening.

Seasonal Recreation Leaders are assigned to the Summer Day Camp programs working with children ages 4 -12 years.  This summer’s camp program runs from June 15 - August 14, 2020. Training will take place the week of June 8, 2020 (mandatory in service training). Recreation Leaders must be able to work during this time period and have the ability to plan and conduct exciting youth recreation activities.

Positions in this seasonal classification perform routine, basic work under direct supervision, in the planning and conducting of a wide variety of recreation activities. 

The Recreation Leader II classification is the second-level position in the Recreation Leader Series. 

Supervision Exercised and Received

Recreation Leader I: Receives supervision from a Recreation Department staff member; may work under functional supervision of a Recreation Leader II or Program Coordinator as assigned.

Recreation Leader II: May provide functional supervision to a Recreation Leader I as assigned.  Receives general supervision from a full-time Recreation Department staff member; may work under functional supervision of a Program Coordinator as assigned.

Essential and Important Duties

• Assists with summer program planning and implementation.
• Supervision of program participants.

• Provide leadership, energy and camp spirit for campers, constantly assessing group dynamics and the needs of individual campers
• Provide excellent customer service to families by communicating with them on a daily basis about their camper’s experience
• Performs site maintenance duties.

THE POSITION

The Human Resources Department is accepting applications for the 1,000 hour temporary and part-time position of Lifeguard in the Parks, Recreation, and Libraries Department.  This position is limited to a maximum of 1,000 hours per fiscal year.  The normal work schedule may vary from January through December, up to 25 hours per week, Sunday through Saturday or May-September, up to 40 hours per week, Sunday through Saturday.

DEFINITION

To perform a variety of duties related to supervising the pool, decks and additional areas of an aquatic facility.

• Maintain constant surveillance as assigned to safeguard swimmers from drowning and other accidents.

The Department is currently recruiting for a Senior Recreation Leader position at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo, Parking. Under general supervision, Senior Recreation Leaders perform work of moderate difficulty in organizing, conducting, and coordinating a variety of recreation activities and supervising others.

Please note: The current work week for this position is projected to be Tuesday through Saturday, to include weekend and holiday shifts.  Schedule is subject to change based on park operations.

Happy Hollow Park & Zoo (HHPZ) Parking: Under the direction of the Assistant General Manager, the position is responsible for parking operations in areas such as customer service, Ventek, parking machine inspections and pickups, staff leadership/development, parking lot safety observations, data collection/analysis, and recruitment. The position focuses on HHPZ & Kelley Parking operations and assists with parking operations at Lake Cunningham Park, Almaden Lake Park, and Alum Rock Park. 

Responsibilities for this position include, but may not be limited to:

• Planning, organizing, conducting, and coordinating recreation activities for select population groups (i.e.: youth, extreme sports participants, etc.).

• Supervising and training part-time recreation personnel and volunteers.

• Providing information and referrals to participants and the community regarding activities and services available, including developing and disseminating publicity materials.

• Fundraising through partnerships and donations from local agencies and community groups to support and increase recreation activities.

• Allocating budget hours to various activities, monitoring expenditures for activities, and preparing routine reports.

• Coordinating and scheduling facility use.

• Assisting in identifying the recreation needs of a target population by participating in meetings with community groups and surveying participants.

• Procuring supplies and equipment for program implementation.

• Cash handling and reconciliation.

LIFEGUARDS AND SWIM INSTRUCTORS

The City of San Rafael is now accepting applications for lifeguards and swim instructors to work at the Terra Linda Community Center and Pool and the Hamilton Pool.  Come experience a summer full of sun, teamwork and community!  These positions are seasonal and part-time (hours will vary).  Pool season is from the end of February through the end of September.  

Qualificiations:

• Must be able to work a flexible schedule (including weekends and weekdays and some holidays)

Experience Required:

Lifeguard:

• Must have current certification in American Red Cross CPR and AED for the Lifeguard, Standard First Aid and Lifeguard Training.
• If you are not yet certified but are enrolled, or planning to enroll in a Lifeguard Training Class, you may apply and be hired upon the contingency that you pass your class.

Senior Lifeguard :

• Must have current certification in American Red Cross CPR and AED for the Lifeguard, Standard First Aid and Lifeguard Training.  Lifeguard Instructor and Water Safety Instructor are highly preferred.
• Senior Lifeguards are responsible for directly assisting the Pool Manager and Recreation Supervisor and helping with training, customer service, staff management, swim lesson coordination and other general duties.

Swim Instructors:

• Must have current certification in American Red Cross CPR and AED for the Lifeguard, Standard First Aid and Lifeguard Training.
• American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and experience is highly desired but not required.  Must be able to teach group and private swimming lessons.  Training can be provided.
