The City of Brisbane is currently recruiting for a Public Works Maintenance Worker I/II. Under the general supervision of the Public Works Team Leader, this position performs a variety of semi-skilled work in the maintenance, construction, modification, repair and operation of City infrastructure, including water systems, storm and sanitary sewers, parks, streets, trees and landscaped areas; and performs other related duties as required.  Please see the full job classification for details. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES (Sample):

• Maintains, repairs, flushes underground water distribution lines, storm, and sanitary sewer collection systems.
• Excavates and prepares potholes and excavations related to water and wastewater line repair for patching on streets and alleys.
• Cleans storm drains, sidewalks and other appurtenances.
• Repairs and replaces plumbing fixtures, as required.
• Inspects and performs routine maintenance on HVAC equipment.
• Removes concrete, builds forms and repairs sidewalks and gutters, and performs other concrete work around City buildings.

 Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

Public Works Maintenance Worker I – Equivalent to graduation from high school. Six months of construction, maintenance or repair experience in at least one of the areas found in City work.

Public Works Maintenance Worker II – In addition to the above, two years of semi-skilled maintenance, construction or repair experience in a variety of craft areas at a level equivalent to the City’s Public Works Maintenance Worker I class.

Licenses:  

Public Works Maintenance Worker I - Must possess a valid California Class C driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record. Must be able to obtain Water Distribution Operator I (D1) issued by the State of California within six (6) months of appointment and obtain a Water Distribution Operator II (D2) by the State of California within eighteen (18) months of appointment.  Such licenses and certifications shall be maintained during employment.

Public Works Maintenance Worker II - Must possess a valid California Class B driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record, or be able to obtain a Class B driver’s license within twelve (12) months of appointment. Must possess a Water Distribution Operator I (D1) issued by the State of California at time of appointment. Must be able to obtain a Water Distribution Operator II (D2) by the State of California within twelve (12) months of appointment.  Such licenses and certifications shall be maintained during employment.

Knowledge of: Maintenance principles, practices, tools and materials for maintaining and repairing a variety of utilities, pump stations, water storage facilities, lift stations, facilities, buildings, grounds and equipment such as found in the City; the operation and minor maintenance of a variety of hand and power tools, vehicles and power equipment; safety equipment and practices related to the work; and safe driving rules and practices and basic traffic control procedures.

Skill in: Performing semiskilled construction, modification, maintenance and repair work on a variety of utilities, pump stations, water storage facilities, lift stations, facilities, building, grounds and equipment such as found in the City; troubleshooting maintenance problems and determining materials and supplies required for repair; skillfully and safely use and maintain tools and equipment related to the work; making accurate arithmetic calculations; reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications; maintaining accurate logs, records and basic written records of work; and working independently or in a team situation.

Physical Demands: Must possess strength, stamina and mobility to perform heavy physical work and use varied hand and power tools; safely drive a motor vehicle and operate heavy construction equipment; as well as lift and move materials and equipment weighing 90 pounds or heavier.  Must be willing and able to work outside in all weather conditions.

 

SALARY AND HOURS:

Maintenance Worker I:  $28.33 - $29.74 - $31.23 - $32.79 - $34.43 per hour.

Maintenance Worker II: $31.16 - $32.70 - $34.35 - $36.05 - $37.86 per hour. 

Appointment to this classification is normally made at the first step of these five step scales. Appointment to the Maintenance Worker II classification, with possession of a valid California Class B Driver’s license, would be eligible to start at the second step of the scale. This is a full-time 40 hours per week position working Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM.  Must be available for regular standby assignments and work emergency overtime as required.

 

BENEFITS: This position is eligible for benefits under the General Employees Association memorandum of understanding.  Health benefits are offered through the CalPERS Health Program.  The City contributes to a flexible benefit plan towards the cost of several health plans offered, up to family coverage for Kaiser. City provides paid vision through VSP, dental through a self-insured reimbursement program, long-term disability and life insurance coverage through Voya Financial, and an Employee Assistance Program through MHN.  Retirement benefits are provided through CalPERS: 2%@60 for Classic members, 2%@62 for New (PEPRA) members.  The City will make a contribution of 1.5% to a Deferred Compensation 457K plan with additional matching available.  Flexible health reimbursement and dependent care spending accounts are also available.  Free commuter shuttle to and from BART and Caltrain.

What You’ll Do

• To perform semi‑skilled and skilled work in the installation and repair of pumps, motors, chain drives, valves and related equipment; and to do related work as required. Receives supervision from the Wastewater Treatment Plant Maintenance Superintendent or Wastewater Treatment Plant Mechanic III as directed. Technical or functional supervision may be provided by higher level treatment plant maintenance personnel. Assignments may require indirect supervision of less experienced plant maintenance personnel. WWTP Mechanic II - Positions assigned to this class are flexibly staffed and are expected to perform the most skilled repair and maintenance work and have a thorough knowledge of the operational characteristics, maintenance and repair methods and techniques and most typical system difficulties for the full range of equipment and operational systems in the plant.  Some of the job duties include:

• Operate machines and tools in repairing defective parts of pumps, compressors, generators, motors, lift stations, boilers and related mechanical equipment.
• Maintain accurate mechanical maintenance records.
• Install, repair, replace, and modify pumps, controllers, bearings, seals, hydraulic pipes, timing devices and assist in installing telemetering electrical equipment.
• Use a variety of power hand tools, cutting and welding equipment and electrical test equipment. Fully utilize the computerized work systems in accordance with work flow processes.
• Perform preventive maintenance on wastewater treatment plant mechanical and electrical equipment. Evaluate equipment performance and identify problem areas.
• Maintain stock inventory and adequate supply of replacement parts.
• Plant mechanics may be required to respond to emergency situations after normal working hours and be subject to serve on emergency stand-by alert and call out status on a rotational basis, including participation in rotating stand-by duties.
• Analyze or create documents, such as blueprints, markings, surveys, etc. to problem solve the most effective approach to a task.
• Verify the work of others for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance.
• Formulate solutions to problems with equipment or operations, including logistics, operations, and processes.
• Draft operating procedures.

DEFINITION

 

Under general supervision, to do general building and facilities maintenance work and other related duties as required.

 

Building Maintenance Worker I is the entry-level class and Building Maintenance Worker II is the journey level class in the series. Incumbents in the Building Maintenance Worker I class will progressively perform most of the duties required in the Building Maintenance Worker series but are not expected to function at the same skill level and will usually exercise less independent direction and judgement on matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established pattern that has been explained before the work is started. Generally, changes in procedures or exceptions are explained in detail as they arise. Under the flexible staffing concept, Building Maintenance Worker II positions that may become vacant may reasonably be filled at the Building Maintenance Worker I or Utility Maintenance Worker level for training purposes.

 

Positions in the Building Maintenance Worker II class are flexibly staffed and normally filled by advancement from the Building Maintenance Worker I class, or when filled from the outside, require prior specific experience in building-related construction and maintenance. Appointment to this class requires the employee to be performing substantially the full range of building maintenance duties and to meet the qualification standards for the class. This class requires the ability to work independently exercising judgement and initiative. Duties will normally require the ability to operate the full range of mechanical equipment related to building maintenance.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

 

Assists in, and at the journey level, performs such functions as painting, glazing, repairing plumbing, installing locks, windows, doors, or lighting fixtures; cleaning, waxing, or refinishing floors, walls, and furniture; cleaning and repairing toilet fixtures; sweeping and cleaning interior and exterior of buildings as needed. Makes routine inspection of proper operation and safe conditions of park and playground equipment, walks, roads, and courts; assists in repair or installation of playground equipment of facilities. Assists in the adjustment, and minor repair of heating and air conditioning units; building and finishing cabinets, countertops, and office furniture and staining and varnishing various wood furniture and surfaces. Performs remodeling and renovation tasks for municipal facilities, paints interior and exterior of City buildings as required, and safely operates various power and hand tools.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Knowledge of: Use and care of general carpentry and maintenance tools; general techniques of carpentry, concrete work, painting, glazing and plumbing.

 

Ability to: Follow oral and written directions; learn and use skilled tasks and apply current practices and procedures; maintain an appropriate public service demeanor; interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

 

Physical Capability to: Perform sustained, strenuous manual labor; climb, lift, crawl, stoop and bend to reach work; may work outdoors in temperature extremes and inclement weather.

ABOUT THE POSITION

 

The City of Redwood City invites you to apply for the position of Utility Worker in the Public Works Services Department’s Wastewater Division to inspect, maintain, and repair pumps, pumping structures, control valves, and other system controls in the sewer and storm drain systems; troubleshoot and maintain the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system; inspect and maintain levee and lagoon infrastructure; and perform stormwater regulatory tasks. This position will assist the division’s Utilities Specialist and the Utilities Field Supervisor in planning pump station maintenance schedules and reviewing the work of incumbents in lower level classifications. This position works independently and serves as an assistant to the Utilities Specialist.

 

Typical duties will include but are not limited to:   

1. Inspect, maintain, and repair pumps and related equipment at the City’s storm pump stations and sewer lift stations.
2. Maintain wastewater (sewer and storm) pump station systems controls.
3. Inspect, adjust, and maintain SCADA system and related parts; replace parts, make repairs, or call for necessary outside assistance.
4. Inspect and service standby generators, diesel and natural gas engines and prepare auxiliary generators.
5. Prepare work reports, repair reports, and requisitions; maintain records and logs related to system operations, maintenance work performed and unusual conditions.
6. Perform inspection and maintenance of levees and conduct water quality sampling in the lagoon and creeks.
7. After hours on-call responsibility for sewer and storm pump stations.
8. Meet stormwater regulatory permit requirements by conducting inspections, maintaining infrastructure, and performing permit tasks as needed.

 

ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL AND IMPORTANT DUTIES:

 

1. Assist as needed with projects involving the sanitary sewer collection system, stormwater collection system, Redwood Shores Lagoon, and other areas.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

Three years of experience maintaining water, sewer, and/or storm utility systems, with an emphasis on mechanical maintenance of pumps and motors.

Education:   Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

License or Certificate:

• If assigned to the Water Utilities Services Division, possession of a valid D-3 Water Distribution Operator certificate issued by the State of California Department of Health is required.
• Within six months of employment, must obtain a valid Class A California Commercial Driver’s License with the hazardous material, tanker endorsements and no automatic transmission restriction.
• Within eighteen months of employment, must obtain a Crane Operator Certificate.
• CPR and First Aid certificate.
• If assigned to the Wastewater Management Services division, possession of a valid California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Wastewater Collection System Maintenance Grade II certificate is required.

This position is on-call 24/7 and is located at the Bus Transit, San Rafael Office.

 

SALARY RANGE:           $117,728.00 - $142,292.80 annually plus excellent benefits

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

 

The Superintendent of Bus Safety & Training is primarily responsible for the supervision of Transportation Supervisors, and Safety and Training staff. It also has the shared responsibility of managing Bus Operators.

 

This position will have the responsibility and accountability for investigating collisions, incidents and passenger complaints related to safety and issuing discipline. This will be the staff liaison position with  the Third Party Administrator. This position will also be responsible for the development of the Bus Operator Safety Program activities, enforce safety policies, monitor newly hired bus operators, and observe overall bus operator performance regarding safety incidents, compliance with safety operations, and general operating functions such as farebox, radio and head sign use. Will identify training needs based on operations trends. Will conduct first level hearings related to collisions and safety incidents as well as oversee all retraining for returning operators or those needing refresher training due to performance issues.

 

 

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Transportation or a related field. Additional recent position-related experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis in lieu of education. Applicants who do not possess a degree must attach a statement supporting additional recent position related experience.
• Minimum of 5 years supervisory experience in transit management is preferred.
• Five-years of full-time experience in safety and training, collision investigation, causation analysis, data analyzation, training programs, and DMV requirements, labor relations, and contract interpretation.

 

 

• Familiar with dispatch and street operations in a public transit agency.
• Familiar with Public Transit Agency Safety Plan (PTASP) and Safety Management System (SMS).
• Transportation Safety Institute (TSI) Train the Trainer certification is preferred.

 

LICENSE(S):

• Must possess and maintain a current, valid California Commercial Class B driver's license with air brakes and passenger endorsements. If not currently a commercial license holder, the successful applicant must obtain at a minimum a California Commercial Class B driver's license with air brakes and passenger endorsements within the 6 month probationary period.
• Must have a satisfactory driving record as defined by: No DUIs and reckless driving infractions within the last 7 years; No more than 2 moving violations within the last 3 years; and Operates District vehicles on a regular basis.

 

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Responsible for the supervision and management of field supervision staff, and safety and training staff. This position also has a shared responsibility of supervising bus operators.
• Responsible for monitoring and managing the Public Transportation Agency Safety (PTASP) requirements as required by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).
• Maintains a safety program for passengers and employees.
• Establishes department goals and objectives and ensures that key staff are cross-trained.
• Works closely with the Bus and Maintenance Departments to develop a training curriculum to address fleet safety issues.
• Develops and maintains safety awards and incentives program.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

• Collision investigation practices and procedures.

The San Mateo Dispatch Center is a division of the Police Department and dispatches for 118 officers in two agencies.  The San Mateo Dispatch team is known throughout the County for its professionalism and desire to serve the public.  San Mateo dispatchers handle in excess of 50,000 calls for service each year, 300,000 telephone calls, 40,000 9-1-1 calls, while also handling over 2 million radio transmissions.

The Department has implemented an on-line reporting system and is continually evaluating other progressive alternative reporting forms to optimize technology.  The Dispatch Center provides contract dispatch services to the City of Brisbane and is currently seeking to expand that role as a regional dispatch services provider.  With a new police building, the City of San Mateo’s dispatch center is  the County’s newest state-of-the-art dispatch center.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, operates a variety of transit vehicles to transport passengers along specific, assigned routes according to the District's requirements. Provide service in a safe, courteous and reliable manner. Responsible for written reports and other information as required. Upon completion of the Golden Gate Transit Training Program, the employee operates regularly scheduled assignments. All runs will originate in either Santa Rosa, Novato or San Rafael.

 

SALARY RANGE:   $24.48 per hour - During training

Golden Gate Bridge, Highway & Transportation District’s Bus Operator Training Program runs approximately twelve (12) weeks, Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., which includes a 60-minute unpaid lunch period. There will also be three (3) nights of night driving scheduled from 2:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

 

Upon successful completion of training: $25.92 per hour, plus benefits - for the first six (6) months of service
