SEASONAL SUMMER PROGRAMS

DEFINITION: Under supervision, perform duties in a variety of recreation programs such as: Community Services Assistant – Day Camps & Teen Camp: Must be available 40 hours a week starting June 2019; Community Services Assistant – Specialty Camps Arts & Nature Center: Must be available 40 hours a week starting June 2019; Community Services Assistant – Sports: Must be available 40 hours a week starting June 2019; Community Services Assistant – Special Events: Events and sponsorship experience is strongly desired; Senior Community Services Assistant – Youth Camps: Minimum of 2 Years of Relevant Experience in a Leadership Capacity. This is a SEASONAL position for summer programs only. Work schedule is flexible and may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE FOR CSA:

EXPERIENCE: Preferred experience (paid or volunteer) including:  working with youth, child care, teaching, public contact or other sports/recreational duties. LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS: Possession of, or ability to obtain, CPR and basic first aid certifications required.  A valid CA driver’s license may be required for certain positions.  If under 18 years of age, must be able to obtain a Work Permit.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE FOR SR. CSA:

EXPERIENCE:  Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in recreation, sports, teaching, the arts, or community services program areas.  All positions require excellent customer service, working with the public, ability to lead staff and work with all age groups. EDUCATION: College coursework or AA degree in related area highly preferred. Additional specialized clerical training is desirable. LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS: Possession of, or ability to obtain, CPR and basic first aid certifications required.  A valid CA driver’s license is required during the course of employment. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The incumbent must have the ability to:

• Assist in supervising and organizing recreation activities
• Assist in monitoring program compliance with laws, rules, and regulations
• Supervise children/participants at park site or facility; lead group activities
• Distribute, monitor and maintain equipment and supplies
• Collect and deposit fees for various programs
• Assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; implement policies and procedures
• Assist with special events, senior activities, pre-school activities, coaching/teaching team sports
• Assist with field and facility maintenance
• Assist with planning teams; coordinating logistics, staff, and volunteer needs for events/programs
• May assist with research; soliciting donations/prizes; monitoring budget
• Prepare reports and distribute program marketing materials; provide information to public, vendors, contractors
• Provide information and referrals to program participants, school official and community groups regarding program being offered
• Maintain records, operate a computer and related software
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
• Perform any other tasks or functions deemed necessary to the daily operations of the employer

WORKING CONDITIONS: Position requires prolonged standing, sitting, walking on level or unleveled and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties.  Incumbents may be required to lift, carry and/or push objects weighing 25 pounds or more.  This position requires near and far vision for reading written documents and in the observation of participants during activities.  Acute hearing is also required in providing customer service to public and /or assistance in facility, classroom, or outdoors.

Positions available at:  Old Meadows Center (therapeutic recreation programs serving individuals with disabilities) and Thousand Oaks Community Center

Part-Time (variable hours- average up to 28 hours per week)

Salary Range: Hourly Rate: $14.30 - $19.28 (based on combination of education and related experience)

Summary:
Under general supervision, conduct and participate in recreational program activities according to established programs, schedules, and standards, in accordance with District policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Develops, conducts and participates in various athletic, craft, social, cultural and instructional activities of a community center or District program.
• Modifies and adapts activities specific to specialized programs or populations.
• Develops interest, enthusiasm, and fair play among participants.
• Teaches classes and leads group activities.
• Directs and supervises the use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Prepares facilities for group activities.
• Issues and collects recreation equipment and supplies.
• Supervises dances, special events, field trips and other group activities.
• Ensures safety of environment and equipment for participants.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• Referees and umpires organized games and sports activities as Unit requires.
• Coordinates and participates in recreational program promotional activities and presentations to groups.
• Applies behavior modification and social modeling techniques as appropriate in specialized programs.
• May assist with transportation in specialized programs.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. *

Education/Experience:
Completion of 30 units is desirable with five hundred (500) to one thousand (1,000) hours of group recreational activity leadership experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which has provided knowledge of principles and practices of public recreation and basic rules and regulations governing competitive group athletic games

Language Ability:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports.  Ability to effectively communicate to the general public in written and oral form, including teaching.

Math Ability:
 Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compile statistical information and track scores.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates and Licenses:
California Driver’s License; First Aid and CPR certificates within 6 months of employment.  The Therapeutics program requires a Commercial Class C license (within 6 months of employment), and is subject to drug testing, including pre-employment.  All positions working with children under 18 require fingerprint clearance.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Examination: 
Candidate selection will be based on competitive examinations.  Test content will be related to the job.  A driver license will be requested for identification and admission to the testing area.  If there is more than one part to an examination, candidates must pass each part.  Candidates with passing scores will be asked to compete in successive parts of the examination.

• Written Test/Practical Exercise:  A written test and a practical exercise may be used, in addition to the appraisal interview. 
• Appraisal Interview:  A job related appraisal interview will be conducted to evaluate and compare participating candidates’ knowledge, skills, and abilities in relation to those factors which job analysis has determined to be essential for successful performance of the job.

We have an excellent opportunity in the Community Development Department of the City of Thousand Oaks!

We are seeking a Senior Combination Building Inspector to lead, oversee and participate in the more complex inspection duties associated with plumbing and mechanical in the enforcement of building, zoning, and related codes and regulations governing the construction, alteration, repair and use of buildings and structures.  The Senior Combination Building Inspector will plan check in specialized areas (plumbing and mechanical), and provide lead supervision to assigned staff.      

The Senior Combination Building Inspector must possess excellent customer service and communication skills, be self-motivated, exercise discretion and independent judgment, and project a very professional image through in-person, phone, and e-mail interactions at all times.

Primary responsibilities:

• Leads, plans, trains, and reviews the work of staff responsible for performing skilled inspection work in the enforcement of building, zoning, fire, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, housing, and related codes and regulations governing the construction, alteration, repair and use of buildings and structures; performs the more difficult and complex building inspection duties of the work unit including assignment as site inspector to long-term large development projects and the Residential Resale Inspection program.
• Trains assigned employees in their areas of work including building inspection methods, procedures, and techniques; serves as a resource for staff to ensure consistency and effectiveness in enforcing building codes and carrying out policy.
• Participates in the development of policies and procedures; recommends programs and projects to higher-level Building Inspections personnel.
• Provides leadership and works with staff to ensure a high performance, customer service-oriented work environment that supports achieving the department’s and the City’s mission, objectives, and values.
• Performs the more difficult and complex inspection services of residential and/or commercial buildings including plan check review of all regulations applicable to an assigned specialized area (plumbing and mechanical).
• Performs counter plan checks and reviews field revisions and/or as-built plans as necessary; ensures compliance with City, state and federal construction, maintenance, use, health, safety, electrical, mechanical and plumbing laws, codes and standards.
• Participates in coordinating residential resale inspections.
• Confers with, coordinates with, and provides information and assistance to architects, engineers, contractors, builders, and the general public in the field and office; explains and interprets applicable codes, ordinances, and zoning regulations.
• Assists other building inspection staff, departments and divisions with questions, inspections, and compliance issues.
• Assists in the preparation of legal documents such as warrants for inspection, citation briefs and demolition or repair orders; tracks extended cases through the court system and coordinates action with the City Attorney’s office.
• Keeps informed of changes and new legislation pertaining to building codes and regulations affecting work of the department, ensuring that appropriate staff is informed and current.
• Maintains a variety of files and records related to areas of assignment; inputs and retrieves information into computer data bases; prepares reports, correspondence, and a variety of other written materials as requested.
