THE POSITION

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office is looking for up to 15 summer interns to perform a variety of administrative functions in divisions throughout the Sheriff's Office. Participants in the 2020 Sheriff's Summer Internship Program will be expected to commit to the entire 12-week program.

Each intern will work a maximum of 20 hours a week earning $17.51 per hour. Typical work hours will be Monday thru Friday 8a.m. - 5p.m. with flexibility to be further discussed during the placement portion of the hiring process.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:  Equivalent to graduation from high school. 

Experience: Minimum of two (2) years/seasons of experience as a Lifeguard or Swim Instructor.  Previous supervisory experience is desirable.

Licenses/Certificates: Lifeguard Training, Water Safety Instructor (WSI), First Aid and Safety, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for the Profession Rescuer and Oxygen Administration certification are required.

Knowledge of: principles, methods, and practices for organized aquatic and recreation programs; scheduling techniques for swim programs and use of recreation facilities; principles of effective supervision; psychology as it relates to the instruction of children and adults; standard office practices and procedures and the use of standard office equipment; techniques for effectively dealing with the public, both in-person and over the telephone; rules and regulations applicable to swim center facilities; water filtration and chemistry.

Skill in: planning, organizing, directing and supervising swim center programs and staff; effectively supervising personnel; applying effective instruction techniques; performing standard office clerical work and basic accounting; interpreting and implementing policies and procedures; counting money; learning and adapting to changing priorities and multiple demands; effectively communicating; displaying outstanding customer service skills by providing information and assistance to customers in an effective manner; and effectively handling problems associated with the mechanical operation of the pool.

Physical Demands: The mobility to perform water rescues and swim instruction, and to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment; vision to see swimming pool and surrounding area, including under water, and vision to read printed materials and computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.

SALARY AND HOURS:

$19.19 - $20.16 - $21.16 - $22.23 - $23.33 per hour.  Part-time position, with paid sick leave benefit available. Initial appointments are generally made at the first step of this five-step scale.  Hours will range from 15-27 hours per week.  Candidates that make the eligibility list may be selected for various shifts as needed throughout the year.  Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays throughout the entire year.

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR (WSI)

$14.60 - $17.75/hr.

DEFINITION: Under supervision, enforce all pool regulations, perform rescues, instruct swimming classes in beginning through advanced skills, maintain pool area and equipment, and does related work as required. These are seasonal positions available from May - September; Work schedule varies and will include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

The Lead Lifeguard is an hourly employee of the Recreation Service Department. The position is supervised by the Water Safety Coordinator and Operations Supervisor.  The primary responsibility is the supervision of on-site recreation activities at the Aqua Adventure Waterpark and safe operations of all rides. This responsibility may include supervision of staff, public assistance, public education, enforcement of rules and regulations, administration of first aid and life support, writing schedules, light maintenance, and water chemical testing. The Lead Lifeguard is expected to work weekends and holidays on a regular basis.

• Supervise staff at Aqua Adventure Waterpark
• Supervise public use to enhance recreation activities and insure safe and legal uses

• Successfully complete Lifeguard Training, along with CPR and First Aid
• Possess excellent written and oral communication skills and be able to effectively communicate with children and adults from a variety of cultural backgrounds
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
• Must be able to handle sensitive and/or stressful situations or information with tack, discretion and significant awareness of confidentiality
• Possess good organizational skills and be able to multitask
• Willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required
• Willingness to comply with suspected child abuse reporting (11166.5 PC)
• Employees are required to be certified in Adult/Child CPR & First Aid from American Red Cross, American Heart Association or supervisor approved equivalent. Employees must be certified within 30 days of hire date or prior to the first day of work, whichever occurs earlier.

THE POSITION
The Deputy Sheriff position performs a variety of responsible law enforcement and crime prevention work, including patrolling assigned areas, answering calls and complaints, investigating crimes, serving civil papers, and providing courtroom security; to enforce all federal and state laws and local ordinances related to public safety and welfare at the Glenn County Sheriff’s Office throughout Glenn County. This position is scheduled for forty (40) hours per week with a rotating schedule. This recruitment may be used to establish a list to fill future vacancies for the next six (6) months.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Pool Tech is an hourly employee of the Parks & Recreation Department.  The Pool Tech’s primary responsibility is the maintenance of on-site recreation facilities at the Aqua Adventure Water Park and the safe operation of all rides. This responsibility includes water testing, writing reports, pool cleaning, general facility cleaning, public assistance and public education. The Pool Tech is expected to work evenings, weekends and holidays on a regular basis.

• Provide outstanding customer service while performing assigned duties, including interpreting and conveying information throughout the Waterpark
• Perform a variety of tasks in the operation, maintenance, cleaning and servicing of water at Aqua Adventure Waterpark
• Complete a variety or records and reports, including inspection reports
• Conduct pool inspections to ensure the pool environment is safe for general use
• Treat water with chemicals to maintain safe and healthy water quality and monitor chemical usage
• Performing water tests for chlorine, Ph, calcium hardness and total alkalinity
• Receive chemical deliveries
• Recognize hazardous conditions, emergency notification and contain area until help arrives
• Pool cleaning
• Facility cleaning to ensure the deck is free of debris, clearing garbage and doing bathroom checks
• Maintain facility and make repairs as needed
• Comply with standards of City designated safety agencies
• Maintain a high degree of confidentiality in performing all aspects of assigned responsibilities
• Attend training and staff meetings as assigned
• Assist other City departments in the event of major emergencies

SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECIEVED

The Maintenance Supervisor and Water Safety Coordinator supervise the Pool Tech   

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be at least 18 years of age (or graduation from high school or GED) AND (two years college OR two years work (or volunteer)  
• Must have a valid California driver’s license
• Must have excellent written and oral communication skills
• Must be able to establish and maintain productive relationships and a positive attitude with and toward others
• Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
• Must have excellent organizational skills and be able to multitask and complete tasks in a timely manner
• Must be willing and able to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required

• Must obtain certification of standard First Aid and CPR within three months of employment and must maintain certifications thereafter as a condition of continued employment.  The City offers training and certification classes, if needed.
