PART TIME RECREATION SPECIALIST I/II

This position will primarily be assigned to front desk reception and facility assistance for the Recreation Center.

Applicants must be able to work up to 20 hours a week including evenings and weekends.

There are multiple vacancies open for this position.

DEFINITION 

Under general supervision, coordinates a segment or segments of recreation programs; provides lead direction, work coordination, and training to lower level staff; may be provided more complex functions related to recreation programs; and performs related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Recreation Specialist is distinguished from the Recreation Leader series in that Recreation Specialists provide lead direction to lower-level staff and may be assigned more complex functions related to recreation programs.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED

Receives general supervision from supervisory or management staff in the Recreation Department. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Plans, promotes, develops, and oversees a portion of assigned recreation program(s); participates in planning and leading activities; promotes assigned program(s) through a variety of mediums; may schedule, train, and guidance to part-time staff;
• Provides a variety of administrative support to assigned program(s); maintains inventory of equipment, supplies, and related items; maintains accurate records related to participation, attendance, behavior, progress, and related statistics;
• Participates in marketing Recreation Department programs and activities; use social media to promote programs and activities; creates and/or distributes promotional material; coordinates marketing materials for distribution; posts information about programs, activities, and events to the City website;
• Provides support for and participates in a variety of City events, such as staff luncheons, senior luncheons, Brown Bag program, Youth in Government program, Youth Advisory Committee events, and other City functions; may be assigned responsibility for transportation of participants, equipment, and/or delivery of goods; may be assigned to decorate, setup, or run portions of events;
• Serves as a liaison for special events; receives and manages special event applications from the public; provides information to Director for staff reports to City Council; coordinates necessary interdepartmental tasks as needed for events;  distributes applications and tasks to required individuals; acts as point person for the City;
• Provides effective customer service both in-person and on the phone; interacts with community members; conducts registrations; attends tabling events; may assist with front-office coverage;
• Attends meetings, workshops, and other related duties as required; and
• Performs related duties as assigned.

JOB-RELATED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: Principals, techniques, and practices involved in the delivery of recreation services; recreation program development, organization, and planning; techniques in promoting recreation programs; safety standards and practices; basic principles of lead direction; common recreation activities and sports; department rules and regulations; first aid and CPR.

Ability to: Work with Microsoft Office programs; exercise independent judgment in performing job responsibilities; direct volunteer and paid staff using positive communication skills; organize and/or direct groups and individuals participating in pre-school age, youth, adult, and/or senior recreation programs and special events; think and act quickly in emergencies; work to maintain and help create an action-oriented atmosphere with both the public and staff; understand and carry out written and oral directions. establish and maintain cooperative relationships with subordinates, peers, and supervisors; practice basic recreation skills in a variety of areas.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way would be:

Education: Equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s degree in recreation, gerontology, therapeutics, or a related field.   

Experience: Two (2) years of full-time equivalent experience in the recreation, transportation, education, or a related field. 

Licenses: Must possess and maintain a valid Class “C” California Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.  Possession of and ability to maintain a valid first aid certificate. Possession of and ability to maintain a valid CPR certificate. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Vision adequate to read and supervise program participants; ability to bend, stoop, or crouch, and have enough physical stamina to lift and carry up to 30 pounds; mobility to move tables and chairs for room setup and to assist in the mobility of a variety of clients. Speak clearly and understandably.

ABOUT THE POSITION
Redwood City is known for delivering a large variety of high-quality special events year-round including concerts, festivals, cultural events, kids concerts, pop up recreational activities, and more. Duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following: follow event plan and execute assigned duties effectively and efficiently; understand proper setup and breakdown procedures of special events equipment; maintain and care for equipment as necessary; monitor program areas for quality assurance; operate effectively as a member of a team; report to supervisors orally and in writing; complete assigned paperwork such as timecards and incident and/or accident reports.
Work schedules can vary during the year pending current event programming. Candidates can expect an average of 15-20 hours per week throughout the year.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Recreation Leader II (Summer Camps Senior Leader) position is responsible for providing high-level programs and services through the Parks and Recreation Department, which provide concrete, positive experiences for youth and promote qualities essential to raising successful young people. Recreation Leaders (II) are responsible for creating and implementing the curriculum for the Moraga Day Camp program, which offers youth daily activities, including arts and crafts, games, songs, field trips, and special events. This position is responsible for supervision of part-time staff and day camp participants. This position may also work additional seasonal events for the Parks and Recreation Department throughout the year.

• Plan and lead arts, crafts, songs, and games according to the week's theme.
• Coordinate camp activity rotation schedule and site logistics to ensure efficient operations.

Recreation Program Specialist Example Duties:

• Follow reservation protocol/procedure for patrons.
• Review menu provided by caterer, submit nutritional component breakdown to County for grant compliance, and prepare flyers for patron.
• Submit documentation/information associated with County nutrition grant to supervisor.
• Schedule and implement nutritional education for seniors and in-service training for staff and volunteers.
• Serve as liaison with caterer, grant provider and staff/volunteers.
• Implement food safety practices as outlined by the Health Department.
• Prior nutrition experience is desired, but not required. Training will be provided.

The City of Patterson is currently recruiting to one (1) part-time position for Pool Manager with the Recreation & Community Services Department for their Summer program and to establish an Eligibility List. Under the supervision of the Recreation and Community Services Director and the Recreation Coordinator, the Pool Manager will be responsible for the operations of the pool. The Pool Manager will be expected to schedule Lifeguards to work as well as oversee the Lifeguards. The Pool Managers are to teach Lifeguards the pool policies and to assist any Lifeguard in decisions made at the pool. The Pool Manager must also be able to resolve confrontations from citizens if not to direct them to the next person in the chain of command. Performs other duties as assigned.

The City of Patterson is seeking to fill one (1) part-time Recreation Leader position in the Recreation Department for their Senior Program and to establish an eligibility list.  Duties include, but are not limited to: under supervision, works with staff to provide programs and activities for Seniors; organizes and teaches participants games and activities such as dance, music, arts & crafts, etc. and with assistance, coordinate, schedule, and plan the programs; ensures participant safety and well being during all activities; ensures the proper handling of first aid and emergency situations.  

 

The City of Patterson is seeking to fill several part-time Recreation Specialist position in the Recreation Department for their Summer sports program and to establish an eligibility list.  Duties include, but are not limited to: implement a wide range of programs that foster community development that include youth/adult sports, special events, open gym, and youth development activities.  This position will require assistance of general office duties and may include supervision of volunteers and staff, and performs related duties as assigned.

This position is established for 19 hours a week, but will vary depending on programming needs, and will be working weekdays, evenings, weekends and holidays.

The City of Patterson is seeking to fill several part-time Cashier positions in the Recreation Department for their Summer program and to establish and eligibility list.  Duties include, but are not limited to: under direct supervision, responsible for collecting concession fees, and admissions. Responsible for the financial integrity of all funds collected and is responsible for tallying and reconciling funds received at the end of the shift. Deposit daily aquatic revenues as instructed at appropriate city facility or with appropriate staff.  Prepare financial reports related to pool and concession revenues.  Responds to phone inquiries, rental requests and performs registration of aquatics programs.  Performs other work as required.

The Summer program typically runs June 1st through August 31st.
