Under general direction, the Deputy District Attorney I/II/III performs legal work in the enforcement of laws; prosecutes criminal cases as assigned by the District Attorney; advises the general public and law enforcement officers on criminal matters; and does related work as required. The position is scheduled for forty (40) hours per week.

JOB DUTIES

• Prepare legal briefs for motions and appeals; prepares affidavits for search and arrest warrants; prepares trial briefs, checks questions of law.
• Provides legal and investigative analysis to police agencies; prepares briefs or opinions concerning law as applied to the jurisdiction of the District Attorney.
• Anticipates legal reasoning of defense attorneys and drafts jury instructions; presents opening statements, interrogates, and cross examines witnesses, argues points of law and makes final arguments or summations.
• Issues subpoenas; attends court pretrial conferences outside of court; represents the court in criminal calendar proceedings, including the scheduling of cases, pleas, negotiations, probation revocation hearings, motions, and sentencings.

The County of Yuba is currently recruiting for the position of Legal Services Specialist in the District Attorney's Office to establish an eligibility list for upcoming vacancies. Under general supervision, the incumbent performs varied and specialized confidential legal support duties, requiring thorough knowledge of the assigned department, division, or program, its procedures, and operational details; provides administrative support to legal staff; assists with calendaring and scheduling; composes and prepares correspondence using judgment in content and style; performs skilled word processing, data entry and organization, recordkeeping, statistical and technical report preparation, and filing; prepares legal documents; assists in case coordination and filing of documents in a timely manner; and performs related duties as assigned. The Legal Services Specialist is a County-wide classification. The employment list established from this recruitment may be used to fill additional vacancies in other departments.

Examples of Duties:

• Perform legal and administrative support duties related to the assigned functional area and department.
• Draft decrees, orders, judgments, motions, pleadings, subpoenas, contracts, briefs, ordinances, and other legal documents, correspondence, memoranda and reports, depending upon the office to which assigned, from notes, brief instruction, dictated tapes or printed materials.
• Verify, code, edit, enter, file and retrieve legal data and prepare reports using a computer system following established format.
• Verify, code, calendar and schedule court dates, meetings, and appointments for attorneys; file or arrange for the filing of documents, legal briefs and other necessary paperwork with the court.  
• Process a variety of legal agreements, contracts, etc., following attorney's instructions.

Under the direction of the County Counsel and Chief Deputy County Counsel, attorneys in this series perform professional legal work by preparing and trying civil cases and providing legal counsel and assistance to the County, it’s officers, associated boards and commissions, as well as outside agencies; assist departments in interpreting regulations on a wide range of topics; represent officers and employees in litigation; and perform duties as assigned.  The Deputy County Counsel I/II/III classification is flexibly staffed and depending on background and experience, may be filled directly at the Deputy County Counsel II or III level. Involvement in formal litigation and discretionary authority increases as the incumbent progresses through the various levels.

• Researches, interprets and applies laws, court decision, statutes, ordinances and other legal authorities for use in the preparation of legal opinions, briefs, pleadings, notes, and memoranda; prepares legal reports, opinions, briefs and appeals of average difficulty under general supervision.  
• Represents, confers with and advises County officials, employees and district representatives on legal questions pertaining to their respective powers, duties, functions and obligations; may attend meetings of boards and commissions in order to provide legal advice and counsel.  
• Represents, confers with, and advises clients of the Office of the County Counsel with respect to all aspects of civil law, including litigation in the area of probate, police powers, zoning, planning, social services, health care, child welfare, disciplinary appeals and grievances, real and personal property, assessment and taxation, and other civil areas of public law.  
• Researches and prepares formal written ordinances, resolutions, contracts, agreements, leases, conveyances and other legal documents.

Examples of Duties Level II (in addition to the above):

• Prepares pleadings and other papers in connection with trials, hearings and other legal proceedings; performs research, investigation and detailed legal preparation for the trial or defense of the County in cases involving condemnation, damage or other civil suits.  
• Makes recommendations to the County Counsel concerning the advisability to prosecute, compromise or dismiss civil litigation.
• Drafts proposed legislation, analyzes pending legislation and recommends County position on legislation.

Examples of Duties Level III (in addition to the above):

• Prepares difficult legal reports, opinions, briefs and appeals using independent judgment and discretion.  
• Attends meetings of boards and commissions in order to provide legal advice and counsel. 

The County of Yuba is seeking a County Surveyor to join its Community Development and Services Agency (CDSA). This technical expert will provide professional land surveying expertise for the County, sharing their insights with the Board of Supervisors, County departments, and special districts.
