THE POSITION

Assistant and Associate Engineering Technicians perform office and field engineering functions in connection with public works activities. The current vacancy is assigned to Construction Inspection and will perform field inspections of public works projects, developments, and activities requiring permits and inspection; and inspects grading, underground utilities, City water mains, sewers, storm drains, curbs, gutters, paving, irrigation systems, streetlights, and other infrastructure construction for conformance with regulatory standards, plans, and specifications. The Assistant Engineering Technician is the entry level classification in the series, and the Associate Engineering Technician is the journey level classification in the Engineering Technician series, with responsibility for more complicated technical tasks.

Examples of duties and responsibilities may include:

• Performs field inspections of public works projects, developments, and activities requiring permits and inspection
• Inspects grading, underground utilities, City water mains, sewers, storm drains, curbs, gutters, paving, irrigation systems, street lights, and other infrastructure construction for conformance with regulatory standards, plans, and specifications
• Maintains daily written records of progress made in construction and materials used
• Makes progress payments, writes change orders, and performs other contract administration duties on routine public works projects
• Assists contractors and the public in interpreting and complying with construction requirements
• Prepares monthly progress payment records
• Issues stop work orders when necessary
• Checks compliance of contractors with local, regional, state, and federal regulations including those governing wages and payroll
• Investigates and resolves citizen complaints regarding construction work on City facilities
• Enforces safety regulations

THE POSITION

The Water Resources Instrument Control Technician installs, operates, maintains, calibrates, and repairs computer hardware, process instrumentation, and telemetry equipment; de-bugs, modifies, and customizes software; modifies, maintains, and repairs all components of a programmable logic controller (PLC) based supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems/distributed control systems; and performs other duties as assigned.

Examples of duties and responsibilities may include:

• Installs, calibrates, programs, maintains, and repairs instruments, PLC based system/distributed control system components, meters, analyzers, recorders, control and feed systems, computers, monitors, printers, transducers, microprocessors, and data transmission systems
• Maintains and repairs electronics, electrical, pneumatic, mechanical, and hydraulic systems, laboratory and safety equipment including gas detection, alarm systems, pH and DO meters;
• Analyzes and modifies computer programs to optimize plant operations and operator convenience

The Emergency Dispatcher I/II position in the Sheriff’s Department performs a variety of difficult work in the provision of 24-hour-per-day, seven-days-per-week public safety emergency dispatch service, including all 911 communications. Emergency Dispatcher I is the entry level class in the Emergency Dispatcher series.  It differs from Emergency Dispatcher II in that the II level is fully trained as a dispatcher and may provide training for the Dispatcher I. This position is scheduled for forty (40) hours per week.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

• Receives incoming calls from the public; determines type of assistance required, including law enforcement, fire or ambulance personnel, etc., and dispatches emergency and non-emergency radio and telephone communications to appropriate jurisdictions and agencies.
• Operates a law enforcement 911 communications network.
• Maintains radio communications with field personnel as necessary to relay messages and information, and to determine the location and safety of field personnel.
• Performs a variety of clerical duties as required, including but not limited to answering business telephones; processing and/or maintaining department records, including case files; compiling information and statistics for reports; preparing criminal history reports; entering/cancelling/retrieving data on computer; ordering supplies, copying and filing documents, etc.
• Processes civil, misdemeanor, juvenile and felony warrants.

Under direct supervision, Wastewater Collection Systems Workers perform a variety of routine to skilled work in the construction, modification, maintenance, and repair of City infrastructure, including wastewater collection, stormwater and drainage, and related systems. The successful candidate will use and operate a variety of manual and power tools and light to heavy power-driven equipment to perform skilled and specialized work on drainage, collection, and related systems, and appurtenances, and performs related work as required. The department may hire at either the I or the II level depending on the skills, certifications, licenses held by candidates in the pool of qualified applicants.

The City of Sunnyvale’s Department of Public Works is recruiting for two Senior Maintenance Worker positions within the Street Operations division. One Senior Maintenance Worker position will be assigned to the pavement team responsible for maintenance, repair, sweeping and cleaning of City streets, curbs, gutters, and similar right-of-way infrastructure. One Senior Maintenance Worker position will be assigned to the traffic markings and signs team responsible for a variety of tasks involving installing and maintaining traffic signs, painting pavement markings and striping, and repairing concrete sidewalk for the city. This classification reports to a Public Works Supervisor and receives assignments related to the above-mentioned maintenance tasks.

The City of Sunnyvale is recruiting for one Senior Park Utility Worker: Tree Maintenance in the Department of Public Works.  This position will lead a small crew (2 to 4 person crew), where the incumbent performs the work duties assigned as well as directs and oversees the work of the crew members.

The City of Berkeley invites applications for the position of Housing Inspector II (Certified)! In this role, you will perform skilled inspection work with City residential housing inspection programs. You will independently perform the full scope of work in the investigation, reporting and follow-up of housing deficiencies to gain compliance with housing, building, zoning, fire, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and related codes and regulations.

Assignments are varied and generally require close interaction with the public, providing information and interpretation of applicable ordinances, codes and regulations. We'll expect you to exercise considerable independence and discretion in conducting inspections, resolving complaints and enforcing inspection results.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:

Equivalent to graduation from high school and at least two years of full-time experience equivalent to Housing Inspector or Building Inspector or Code Enforcement Inspector for a public agency. 

Must possess:

• An International Code Council (ICC) OR California (CA) certification in Residential Building or Housing Inspection or in Code Enforcement; and
• ICC or CA Residential or Commercial Electrical Inspector certification and ICC or CA Residential or Commercial Plumbing Inspector certification, or equivalent ICC or CA Legacy Certification for either Combination Inspector or Combination Dwelling Inspector.

Other requirements: Must be able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business, incumbent is required to maintain a valid California driver's license as well as a satisfactory driving record.

In addition to the qualifications above, the ideal candidate will have effective and courteous communication skills in order to discuss housing violations, violation remedy and necessary inspections and fees and participate in depositions and court hearings as requested.
