The Recreation Department provides programs and activities for Colma residents of all ages ranging from infants to seniors.  Program elements include fitness, enrichment, cultural events, special events, sporting events, trips, and community events.  It is the goal of the Recreation Services Department to offer a balanced program ensuring all elements are offered to all age groups throughout the year.

This particular recruitment will be a 56 hour (Monday-Friday) position - with the exception of emergencies and Strike Teams.  The base weekly schedule will resemble the following example: 

Monday - 8 hours

Tuesday - 8 hours

Wednesday - 8 hours

Thursday - 24 hours

Friday - 8 hours

Our Firefighters perform firefighting, rescue, fire prevention, equipment operation and equipment maintenance activities to protect life and property; provide emergency medical and rescue services to the community; and perform related duties and responsibilities as required. The Firefighter classification receives direct supervision from the Fire Captain and may receive functional direction from the Fire Engineer.

This is the entry level paid classification in the field of firefighting. It is distinguished from the classification of Fire Engineer in that the latter is assigned more responsible and varied duties which require knowledge and experience in driving motorized fire fighting vehicles and operating related pumping, hydraulic and other specialized fire equipment.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Responds to fires, emergency rescues, first aid, fire alarms, natural and man-made disasters, and public assist service calls.

• Connects and lays hose lines; assists in holding nozzles to direct streams of water; carries and operates various fire extinguishers and other firefighting appliances; operates engine pumping equipment as required.

• Assists in overhaul, salvage and cleanup operations at any incident.
• Performs housekeeping and station maintenance.

• Operates ventilation equipment; administers first aid.
• Cleans, services, inspects and test firefighting equipment and apparatus.
• Conducts inspections of building, structures, and properties for compliance with building, safety and related City codes.
• Answers general questions from the public.
• Prepares and updates reports, logs, maps, and other departmental records as needed.
• Makes recommendations to improve the manner in which the job is performed and to deliver the highest quality of service to the public.
• Studies and trains on Fire Department rules and regulations, fire hazards, firefighting techniques, and other related emergency subjects.
• Maintains regular, consistent, and timely attendance.
• May be assigned to drive and operate fire department vehicles.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (position requirements at entry) *

Knowledge of:

• Principles, practices, and procedures of modern fire prevention and suppression methods.
• Operation and maintenance of firefighting equipment, tools, and devices.
• Applicable local, State and Federal laws, and departmental rules and regulations.
• Water hydraulics, principles of fire streams and proper pump pressures, and fire behavior.
• First aid, CPR, and other rescue procedures.
• Safety practices, fire hazards, and potentially dangerous situations as they relate to fire prevention, fire suppression, fire investigation, rescue, emergency situations and hazardous materials.
• Geography of the local area including location of hydrants and mains, major traffic areas, and fire hazards.

Ability to:*

• Perform fire suppression, fire prevention and fire inspection activities in emergency situations in accordance with applicable laws, codes, rules, and regulations.
• Demonstrate a high degree of mechanical aptitude as required in the operation and maintenance of the firefighting and rescue equipment.

The San José Fire Department's (SJFD) core mission is to serve the community by protecting life, property, and the environment through prevention and response. SJFD is a high-volume, high-performance, all-risk Fire Department that protects approximately 200 square miles including, residential, commercial, high-rise, wildland interface areas, and a number of high-hazard occupancies. The San José Fire Department (SJFD) is currently seeking to fill one (1) full-time Senior Geographic Information Systems Specialist vacancy in the Fire IT division.

The salary range for this classification is: $100,049.04 - $121,954.56.

This salary range includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. The actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates' qualifications and experience.

The San José Fire Department is looking to fill a Senior Geographic Systems Specialist position within the BAS/Fire IT division. This role will manage mapping projects and, when applicable, application development activities to support the mapping function. Under the direction of the Department Information Technology Manager, the key duties and responsibilities of this position include:
 

• Oversee GIS data management efforts, including Fire-specific layers, ensuring the quality and timely input of the data. This involves performing quality control and quality assurance (QC/QA) and assisting with hands-on data management to minimize backlogs.
• Coordinate with various departments and the Enterprise GIS team on Fire data conversion and consolidation efforts, contributing to the Enterprise GIS data repository.
• Provide geodatabase development and programming (SQL Server), with the ability to understand complex database concepts, interfaces, and the implications of different database designs.
• Assist in the development and management of GIS project plans, including defining requirements, setting tasks and resource assignments, and ensuring standards, deadlines, and quality standards are met.
• Ensure City staff using GIS receive necessary training and technical support.
• Hire and manage GIS teams, including GIS I/II specialists, cartographers, data managers, analysts, and vendors, to meet GIS project objectives and timelines. Build team capacity to provide GIS project support, training, map production, and analysis services in addition to data management.
• Perform analytical analysis with large datasets.
• Prepare and perform data modeling and create entity-relationship diagrams.
• Develop, document, use, and troubleshoot workflows.
• Troubleshoot software issues related to all GIS service delivery functions.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

There is currently one (1) Full-Time 2-Year fixed-term position in the Department of Public Works supporting both the Water Resources and Road Maintenance Divisions.  

The Natural Resources Senior Planner will be housed in the Water Resources Division and will primarily support environmental compliance for Department of Public Works (DPW) Road Maintenance Division projects, including maintenance, repair, and replacement of roads, bridges, and drainage infrastructure (i.e., culverts, ditches and drainage channels).  
The work is dynamic, requiring strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills to accomplish the following tasks that range among:

The San José Fire Department's (SJFD) core mission is to serve the community by protecting life, property, and the environment through prevention and response. This is the trainee level class in the Firefighter series, responsible for becoming proficient in the understanding of lifesaving and firefighting methods within the SJFD. Through a specific program comprised of general and specialized education, focused training including extensive hands-on experience, Firefighter Recruits will learn diverse tasks, policies, procedures and standards within the SJFD. Incumbents will learn techniques in emergency medical services, rescue work, firefighting and other emergency services. Duties may involve considerable physical exertion and potential risk to health and safety. Work is rigidly structured, highly supervised, and incumbents are continuously evaluated and receive feedback regularly. Firefighter Recruits must graduate from the Academy and be appointed to the class of Firefighter in order to retain employment in the job series.

• Paramedic Pay: 14% of top step Firefighter upon completion of Santa Clara County Paramedic Accreditation process (currently $733.69 bi-weekly)
• Oral Bilingual Pay: 2.5% of top step Firefighter (currently $131.02 bi-weekly)

Education & Training Pay (AA/AS - BS, Fire Science, Fire Technology, Fire Protection Technology): 1.5% of top step Firefighter (currently $78.61 bi-weekly)

Employees hired on or after January 1, 2017, must reside within 120* minutes travel time from the nearest City of San Jose fire station (non-traffic period as calculated by Google Maps or map program mutually agreed to by the parties).

Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, the Recreation Coordinator I – Facilities is responsible for assisting with the smooth operation of activities, programs, rentals, and special events at multiple Recreation Facilities. Mill Valley Recreation is a 7-day a week operation.

Recreation Coordinator I - Facilities schedule may include weekday, weekend, early morning and evening shifts. Schedule is subject to change depending on facility and supervisor needs.

• Act as the primary point of contact for rental inquiries, promptly responding to emails, phone calls, and in-person inquiries regarding facility rentals.

• Oversee the rental application process by providing interested parties with necessary documentation, rental agreements, and pricing details.

Under general direction of the Finance Officer, this position performs professional and technical work of a confidential nature in the areas of payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, general accounting, and public employee retirement (CalPERS) reporting. This position assists with the day-to-day accounting and financial operations of the District, including maintenance of accounting and payroll records, and other tasks as assigned.
