Paid Internship Description
The City of San Mateo Community Development Department is looking for two (2) Planning Interns

The Community Development Department’s Planning Division provides a broad range of services, including review of applications for new development and long-range planning.
The intern must have an interest in pursuing planning as a career and will gain practical experience to be competitive in the job market. Enthusiasm, respect, accountability, collaboration, critical thinking, willingness to learn are attributes we are seeking in the candidates.
What You’ll Be Doing
This paid internship will involve supporting research regarding a variety of activities, and assignments performing duties and responsibilities related to the daily functions of Planning Division as required.

Examples of Duties
Essential job duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: assisting planning customers at the public counter/virtual counter, responding to zoning inquiries, assisting with current and long-range planning projects, design review, research and special assignments, community outreach, and other related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
A positive professional attitude, inquisitive, strong communicator with writing skills, and ability to work independently when necessary and meet deadlines. Individuals with an interest in urban planning or local government are preferred.
Typical Qualifications
Experience, Education and Training: Graduate or currently enrolled in a college or university, in the fields of Urban Planning, Architecture, Geography, Public Administration, Public Policy, or related field.
Time Commitment
Approximately 16-24 hours a week. Some flexibility in scheduling can be accommodated. Each intern is able to work a maximum of 1,000 hours per fiscal year.
Application Deadline
Recruitment will close by December 4, 2020, at 5:00 p.m.
Interview Process
All applications will be reviewed for minimum qualifications. Qualified candidates will be contacted for a virtual interview, which is expected to take place the week of December 7 – 11, 2020. The position would begin in January 2021.
Compensation
$16.78 – 20.01 per hour
