Camp Newark is seeking a confident, creative, and organized leader to serve as an Activity Coordinator for our dynamic summer camp program. This role is ideal for individuals who thrive in high-energy environments and are passionate about creating meaningful experiences for youth ages 6–11. 

The Activity Coordinator plays a key leadership role in planning and delivering engaging daily programming while supporting and supervising camp staff. This position requires strong communication, organization, and leadership skills, along with the ability to create a fun, structured, and safe camp environment. 

Key Responsibilities: 

• Create, schedule, and implement creative camp activities for youth ages 6–11, including arts and crafts, sports, games, and STEM-based enrichment. 

• Lead, mentor, and evaluate camp counselors, including training and delegating responsibilities. 

• Coordinate daily camp schedules, special events, and field trips. 

• Maintain clear and professional communication with parents regarding camper experiences and program information. 

• Ensure a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for all participants. 

• Support overall camp operations and assist with problem-solving as needed. 

This position requires working both indoors and outdoors in a fast-paced summer camp setting. 

WORK SCHEDULE 

Summer-only position (June – August) 

Monday–Friday 

30–35 hours per week 

Applicants should be available throughout the majority of the summer season, with limited vacation time (less than one week preferred).

REQUIREMENTS 

• Must be at least 18 years of age.

• Prior experience working with school-age children is required. 

• Must successfully pass a TB test prior to appointment (at candidate’s expense).

Candidates will work either for the Ash Street Summer program at Ash Street Park or Camp Newark at the Silliman Center.  Both positions require candidates to work in an outdoor environment.   

Work Schedule: Since this is a summer-only position, it is expected that applicants can work Monday-Friday with limited vacation time (less than one week) during the below program dates: 

Ash Street Summer Program: Monday-Friday: June 22-July 24, 10:30am – 3:30pm, no camp on July 3 

Camp Newark: Monday-Friday: June 8– July 31, 7:30 am – 4:15 pm, morning and midday shifts available.

Essential Duties:

Camp Counselors (Recreation Leaders) are assigned to the summer day camp programs working with children ages 3 1/2 to 12 years old.  They assist, plan, organize and lead the physical, recreational and social activities of assigned recreation programs under direction of the Camp Director (Recreation Program Specialist) and the Recreation Coordinator.  

• Bring energy and enthusiasm to the camp environment every day.
• Safely and appropriately supervise campers at all times.
• Plan and lead arts, crafts, games and sports according to the theme of the week.
• Serve as a mentor and role model to campers by modeling positive behavior at all times.
• Use positive discipline with campers and communicate effectively with parents and guardians.
• Effectively collaborate with fellow camp staffers and Parks and Recreation Department staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

Supervision:

Under the general supervision of the Recreation Coordinator and Camp Director, Camp Coordinators are responsible for the day-to-day operations of their assigned summer day camp:  executing weekly curriculums by ordering supplies, supervising their camp staff, and leading all of their camp activities on a daily basis.  The City of Orinda offers two city-run camps:  Camp Orinda and Camp Orinda Jr.

Camp Orinda is a full-day (9:00 am to 4:00 pm) traditional camp for 6 to 11 year olds.

Camp Orinda Jr. is a half-day camp (9:15 am to 12:45 pm) for 3 1/2 to 5-year olds.

Essential Duties:

• Execute the camp curriculum in accordance with the Camp Director and Recreation Coordinator.
• Lead arts, crafts and games according to the theme of the week.
• Participate in weekly camp debriefs with Camp Director.
• Offer leadership, guidance and direction to Camp Counselors.
• Supervise Counselors-in-Training (CIT), pair CIT's with experienced Camp Counselors, and delegate CIT weekly duties during CIT camp week.
• Serve as a mentor and role model to campers and communicate effectively with guardians and families.
• Safely and appropriately supervise all campers.  Camp Orinda Coordinator will supervise campers on weekly field trips around the East Bay.
• Monitor supplies and create weekly supply list.
• Ensure the health and safety of all campers are prioritized in all summer camp programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

Supervision:

Under the general supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, the Camp Director assists the Recreation Coordinator in the administration of summer camp staffing, programming, training and camper/family relations.  The Camp Director is responsible for overseeing the camp coordinators and camp counselors, and the Director is the on-site camp liaison for families. 

This position is a 40 hour per week Monday through Friday seasonal position during summer.  In addition to staff recruitment and selection and summer program planning hours prior to camp start dates, there is also an opportunity to continue employment on a part-time basis with the Parks and Recreation Department during the school year to assist in the planning and implementation of Orinda Youth Sports (OYS), adult sports, and the Orinda Teen Advisory Council (OTAC).

Essential Duties:

• Collaborate with Recreation Coordinator to develop, coordinate and facilitate summer camp programs and activities.
• Oversee camp staff, and promote a safe, supportive and engaging environment for all staff.
• Assist Recreation Coordinator in staff hiring and training and with staff scheduling and evaluation.
• Lead weekly debriefs involving city-run summer camps with Camp Coordinators.
• Direct Counselor-in-Training camp during last one week of summer.
• Utilize strong communication and decision-making skills to handle crisis management, discipline, or troubleshooting issues related to campers, families or staff.
• Maintain fiscal records and work within budget to order and maintain camp supplies and resources.
• Act as liaison between families, campers, staff, and Parks and Recreation Department.
• Ensure the health and safety of all campers and staff are prioritized in all summer camp programs.
• Support Recreation Coordinator with ePACT management and administration.

THE POSITION:

Under the general supervision of the Community Services Manager, the Clinical Supervisor supports with the development and achievement of Youth and Family Services goals and objectives. The Clinical Supervisor provides both clinical and administrative leadership within the Youth and Family Services Division. The Clinical Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the supervision of staff in planning, organizing, delivering, and reporting clinical, case management, and support services for youth, families, and adults, including the coordination of crisis and counseling intervention services. In addition, the Clinical Supervisor provides technical and clinical expertise, guidance, and supervision to a multidisciplinary treatment team and the clinical intern program.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

This classification is a mid-management, journey-level role with first-line supervisory responsibilities, which includes overseeing, coordinating, and leading the planning, assignment, delivery, and evaluation of clinical programs and services, as well as the work of assigned clinical and non-clinical staff and interns. This role requires considerable initiative and independent judgment in developing procedures and standards, as well as in managing the provision of both clinical and non-clinical programs and services.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

• Provides highly responsible direct programmatic and administrative support to the Community Services Manager, overseeing the planning, organization, and coordination of services provided by Youth and Family Services, including but not limited to overseeing counseling, case management, mentoring services, and grant funded programming.
• Develops program policies and procedures, implementing consistent standards and practices in clinical operations and addressing changing client and organizational needs.
• Plans, organizes, assigns, supervises, reviews, and evaluates the work of a multidisciplinary team, including clinical staff.
• Works with the Community Services Program Manager and staff to develop, track, and compile clinical program data and statistics; prepares local, state, and federal grant proposals, curricula, and reports for youth and family programs and services.
• Provides clinical expertise and consultation to clinical and direct service staff, interns, partner organizations, and police officers, as needed.
• Provides training to the multidisciplinary team regarding clinical interventions and documentation and program standards.
• Administers the clinical intern program; actively participates in intern recruitment, placement, training, supervision, and completion of all documentation required by educational institutions.
• Coordinates and tracks referrals from partner agencies and service providers; conducts intakes to determine appropriate level of care and staff assignments.
• Provides group and individual counseling to youth and adults, providing family therapy when appropriate, including crisis assessment and intervention; completes assessments and treatment plans and implements appropriate intervention and support services.
• Implements Quality Assurance protocols to ensure documentation meets the funding requirements. Develops and provides documentation training materials and implements staff training.
• Reviews documentation for completeness and accuracy, using findings to monitor and improve services, ensuring client safety, legal compliance, and quality of care.
• Ensures that staff remains current in the professional, legal and ethical standards of the profession; provides training and workshops as necessary for clinical and case management staff and interns.
• Develops and fosters relationships with cross-sector of stakeholders, including but not limited to; schools, Union City Police Departments, families, community-based organizations, etc. This includes preparing and facilitating meetings, trainings, workshops, and presentations.
• Coordinates and responds to Union City Police Department to provide urgent clinical and case management support to community members.
