THE DEPARTMENT & DIVISION
The Department of Public Works (DPW) is responsible for maintenance activities along approximately 92 miles of public right-of-way. It strives to improve, develop, and maintain public infrastructure essential to the safety, mobility, and quality of life for Orinda citizens. The DPW operates with an approximate annual operating budget of $5 million and has 17 staff members. The Department also administers a CIP budget of approximately $14 million. DPW’s organizational structure consists of two divisions: Engineering Services, and Maintenance & Facilities Services.

The Maintenance & Facilities Division is responsible for the repair and improvement of city-owned public infrastructures including stormwater drainage, roadway, traffic, and pavement, and for coordinating with vendors and contractors on large maintenance and landscaping projects. The Division operates with an approximate annual operating budget of $3.4 million. The Division’s recent reorganization now includes the integration of the maintenance operations of the Parks & Recreation Department, which covers the following buildings and parks:

THE JOB
The Maintenance and Facilities Superintendent is responsible for ensuring that municipal buildings and public facilities are maintained to high standards, remaining safe and functional for employees and the public. The Superintendent will oversee a direct staff of two supervisors, up to eight indirect reports, and the Division’s annual budget. This role involves managing contract and project activities, including multi-year park and landscape maintenance contracts (currently with MCE corporation), multi-year janitorial services, facilities maintenance projects in the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and long-term maintenance and repair plans for city-owned buildings, streets, storm drain systems, parks, trees, and landscaping. The Superintendent will coordinate with City departments and external contractors; assess and prepare contract documents; participate in vendor selection; administer contracts and evaluate contractor performance; and review and approve billings. Responsibilities also include programming building maintenance, prioritizing tasks, managing safety trainings, coordinating emergency responses, and ensuring regulatory compliance, including adherence to ADA accessibility regulations. Under the direction of the Director of Public Works, the Superintendent will coordinate activities and operations to allocate resources effectively. They will thoughtfully balance daily operational tasks and long-term strategy, ensuring alignment with community needs and goals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience: Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in building maintenance, facility management, construction management, public works operations or related activity including two (2) years of supervisory responsibility.

• Possession of a valid California Driver's license with a demonstrated history of safe driving.

Role description

Under direction, the Custodian performs routine manual cleaning tasks in public buildings, schools, other facilities, and surrounding areas.

• In recreational areas, cleans auditoriums, gymnasiums, club houses and locker rooms; picks up papers and rubbish in play areas; hangs flags and decorations; reports evidences of vandalism, broken plumbing, windows, doors, locks, etc.
• May wash interior glass partitions and interior and exterior windows which can be easily reached from floor or ground level.
• As school custodian, may supervise and maintain order among students during recess periods; distributes milk or other refreshments to students; performs minor duties in repairing  chairs, desks and toys.
• Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

• Possession of, or ability to obtain, Basic First Aid and CPR certification within six (6) months of employment.
• Depending on assignment, possession of, or ability to obtain, a District approved Fire Suppression Training certification within (12) months of assignment into the District’s fire program.

THE POSITION

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performing general grounds cleaning, including emptying trash receptacles, mopping, sweeping, and raking City park and recreation sites as needed. Water, mow, cultivate, prune, weed, renovate, and fertilize grass, plants, trees, flowers, and shrubs. Operate power mowers, chain saws, rototillers, aerators, hedgers, spreaders, front-end loader, edgers, air compressors, and other equipment. Utilize proper safety precautions related to all performed work. Drive vehicles and equipment as required. Prepare and maintain athletic fields and related facilities, swimming pools, and cemetery/interment operations.  Regular and consistent attendance.

 

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

Install, maintain and replace playground equipment and fences; assemble tables, benches and bleachers. Works as a member of the City pest control crew spraying various fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other related chemicals in City park and recreation areas. Respond to inquiries from the general public. Install, maintain and repair irrigation systems. Assist in setting up community services and special events. Maintain, repair and replace plumbing systems and fixtures such as light switches, motors, wall receptacles, conduits, faucets, drinking fountains, water heaters, water closet, urinals, water regulators and pressure valves.  Work cooperatively with others. Work any shift including weekends and holidays. Perform related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Park Maintenance Worker I

Education:  High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience:  Six (6) months of experience in the care and maintenance of landscapes or facilities.

License and Certificate:  Required upon hire, possession of a valid California Driver’s License

The Department

The Parks and Recreation Department is the third largest department in the City and is organized by program area, with each program administered by a supervisor, coordinator, or specialist. The Position 

Under direct supervision of the Natural Resources Specialist and general supervision of the Parks Supervisor and/or Parks Program Manager, the Natural Resources Aide performs a variety of tasks and maintenance activities, including the removal of invasive plants, installation of native plants, trail repair, erosion control, and other related duties as assigned.

This entry-level classification will perform maintenance and labor tasks in support of habitat management and restoration activities under the Sign Hill Habitat Restoration Project. Work may be performed independently or as a member of a crew. Depending upon assignment, work is performed under close to general supervision. Work is reviewed while in progress and by the results achieved. Incumbents may provide limited work direction to temporary or volunteer workers.

Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen) has an excellent career opportunity for an experienced and motivated Field Resource Specialist who will plan, organize, manage, oversee, and participate in the implementation of vegetation management, fuel reduction, and natural resource protection and restoration projects on Midpen lands. The Field Resource Specialist participates in long-term and short-term project planning, grant application and administration, coordinates assigned activities with other Midpen departments and outside agencies. This position will supervise staff and will direct consultants, contractors, and volunteers to assist in completing this work. Supervisory and administrative tasks will include budgeting, project management, setting priorities, and providing guidance to multi-disciplinary teams. • Field Resource Specialist will report to the Foothills Field Office (FFO) in the Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve in Cupertino, CA, to the Foothills Area Manager.

About the Position:   The Field Resource Specialist is an exempt/salaried position, which is responsible for administering the principles and practices of public land management including: open space or undeveloped park maintenance, resource management including resource protection, managing budgets, prioritizing work tasks, and responding to public; stakeholder agencies; and other department inquiries. The Field Resource Specialist directs the day-to-day implementation of fuel reduction and vegetation management goals of Midpen’s Wildland Fire Resiliency Program. The Field Resource Specialist will support Midpen’s utilization of contractors and act as a point of contact for a wide variety of vegetation maintenance and management tasks. The successful performance of this work will require a working knowledge of a broad range of resource management trades and technical principles, as well as a professional background and the ability to coordinate work with other Midpen departments.  Candidates with background in fire risk prevention activities and vegetation management trades are desirable. Work Environment:  This position is part of the Land and Facilities Services Department assigned to a field office and will work primarily in the Foothill office in Rancho San Antonio Preserve, Cupertino, and will visit Midpen field sites. Positions in this classification must possess the ability to lift and carry materials and objects weighing up to 60 pounds and must possess the ability to push and pull objects weighing up to 100 pounds, with the use of proper equipment.  Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. Following onboarding and successfully meeting job performance expectations, may be eligible for the flexible work program which includes 9/80 schedules. Current work schedule is Monday to Friday, 7am to 4:30pm, recurring 9/80 Monday day off.

Education and Experience:  Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:   

Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in environmental design, forestry, ecology, natural resource management, park administration or a related field, and three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in project management preferably in parks, open space, or a related field including one (1) year of supervisory responsibility. 

Licenses & Certifications Required:    

• Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Professional Rescuer Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification within six (6) months of employment.

• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid First Responder or equivalent certification within six (6) months of employment.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, the level of certification in the Incident Command System courses as specified under the National Incident Management System (NIMS) within 12 months of employment.

• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a District approved Fire Suppression Training certification within 12 months of employment.
• Depending on assignment, possession of, or ability to obtain, a California Qualified Applicators Certificate with Landscape Maintenance (Category B) for pesticide application within twelve (12) months of employment.
• Possession of a valid California Class A or B Driver License and required endorsements is desirable.

AHA is seeking a Facilities and Maintenance Technician I to perform a range maintenance and alterations on Housing Authority buildings and facilities, HVAC, and other electrical and mechanical systems; identifying and evaluating construction-related problems; performing installation and repairs on plumbing systems; conducting property inspections, and coordinating with vendors on maintenance replacement and repair projects. Under the general supervision from the Assistant Director of Administrative Services, this position will work on tasks that include carpentry, plumbing, roofing, painting, heating & air conditioning, mechanical and electrical trades.
