The City of Berkeley is now accepting applications for Assistant Inspector in the Building & Safety Division of the Planning Department! This is a temporary, two-year position with an option for a third year upon approval by the Building Official, once certain criteria and milestones are met during the initial two years.

The Assistant Inspector will learn, in phases, every aspect of the building inspection process under the tutelage of the Building Inspection Section and Permit Service Center staff. This training will include learning and understanding the building permit review and issuance process, gaining and cultivating good customer service skills, studying and learning how to enforce the California and City of Berkeley Building Standards Codes, and acquiring proper building inspection techniques.

Upon approval from the Building Official, the Assistant Inspector will have the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills by performing inspections in the field throughout the City of Berkeley as allowed by State regulations and under the guidance of a Building Inspector as assigned. These inspections will gradually increase in scope and difficulty as new skills and knowledge are acquired and confidence grows. It is expected that the Assistant Inspector will acquire an ICC Residential Building Inspector (ICC B1) certification by the end of year one and an ICC Commercial Building Inspector (ICC B2) certification by the end of the two-year position. At the end of the term and upon Building Official approval, the Assistant Inspector will have the option of promoting into the role of Building Inspector I (certified).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:

Equivalent to graduation from high school and:

1. Two years of full-time paid experience in one of the following: 
   • Building, civil, or architectural design drafting;
   • Building, housing, or home inspection;
   • Code enforcement;
   • Permit processing;
   • Performing carpentry, electrical, heating and refrigeration, plumbing, or similar work; OR
2. Three years of full-time experience in support of building inspections, housing inspections, or code enforcement; OR
3. Completion of two years of education in a recognized college or university with completion of 12 semester or 16 quarter units in any of the following or similar areas: civil or structural engineering, construction technology, design, inspection technology, architectural drafting, mechanical or, electrical engineering.

Other requirements: Must be able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill job responsibilities. When driving on city business, the incumbent is required to maintain a valid California driver's license as well as a satisfactory driving record.

Under general direction of the Administrative Services Manager, the Administrative Services Technician is a confidential position that provides paraprofessional, technical, administrative, and secretarial support to District programs and services. The Administrative Services Technician learns and then applies procedural, program, and compliance knowledge; assumes ongoing, technical responsibilities specific to assigned areas, such as risk management and record management; works with departments and outside agencies to coordinate assigned programs, projects, and services; and performs research and routine analysis on a wide variety of special projects.

The Administrative Services Technician also supports the general administration of the District office, such as proofreading, filing, processing mail, answering the telephone, providing front counter customer service, maintaining calendars, organizing office storage, and setting up and breaking down the Board Room for meetings and events.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate has experience in either of two backgrounds. The first is a background in providing journey-level clerical or technical support in the public or private sector that included interpreting and explaining complex rules and regulations, researching information, and preparing accurate documents and reports. Alternatively, the second is a background in providing advanced office support that included data entry and the processing of forms and records.

In addition to one of these two backgrounds, the ideal candidate is curious and enjoys learning about new systems and functions at a technical level. They appreciate when careful precision and accuracy is necessary to complete a task. The ideal candidate is open to helping with functions and tasks that they are not familiar with and will seek out resources and guidance to better understand the function and complete the task accurately. They are also proactive in identifying needs, developing and recommending solutions, and ensuring the solution is fully implemented.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience: A combination of training and experience that demonstrates that a person has obtained the required knowledge and is able to perform the essential duties of the position. A person with the following combined training and experience would typically qualify to compete in a selection process:

• Equivalent to graduation from high school and four (4) years of increasingly responsible journey-level clerical or technical support experience which included responsibility for interpreting and explaining complex rules and regulations, researching information, and preparing accurate documents and reports, or advanced office support work that included data entry and the processing of forms and records.

THE POSITIONS

The City of Livermore is currently accepting applications to fill one (1) Mechanic vacancy and one (1) Senior Mechanic vacancy in the Fleet Services Section of the Maintenance Division.

Mechanics at all levels perform maintenance and repair services on heavy/light City vehicles/equipment, such as fire trucks, automobiles, construction equipment, street sweepers, lawn mowers, stationary generators; and perform other duties as assigned.

The Mechanic is a journey level classification in the Mechanic series. The Mechanic performs a range of skilled tasks requiring journey level mechanical ability and aptitude. Work assignments are performed according to established rules and procedures.

The Senior Mechanic is an advanced journey and lead level position classification in the Mechanic series and may be distinguished from those in the Mechanic class by the broader range of responsibilities and leading a crew. Senior Mechanics provide lead direction and training to section staff.

There is currently one (1) Full-Time 2-Year fixed-term position in the Department of Public Works supporting both the Water Resources and Road Maintenance Divisions.  

The Natural Resources Senior Planner will be housed in the Water Resources Division and will primarily support environmental compliance for Department of Public Works (DPW) Road Maintenance Division projects, including maintenance, repair, and replacement of roads, bridges, and drainage infrastructure (i.e., culverts, ditches and drainage channels).

Temporary Maintenance Worker – Parks & Roadsides 

Salary: $20.00/hour

DEFINITION 

Perform a variety of general maintenance services for parks and roadsides and other areas as assigned within the Town.   

• This is a part-time temporary, non-benefitted position. 
• Flexible schedule up to 29 hours per week, which may include weekend work; not to exceed 950 hours per calendar year. The schedule for this position would be Friday through Monday. 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED 

General supervision is received from the Maintenance Supervisor. May exercise supervision of Work Alternative Program participants as assigned. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/DUTIES 

Essential duties are inclusive of, but not limited to the following:  

• Clean up trash in and around Town-maintained park and roadside areas. 
• Operate a variety of equipment, including: half ton and three-quarter ton trucks, Cushman and golf cart (or similar) vehicles, blowers and other two-cycle equipment, and hand tools (i.e., shovel, rake, hoe, etc.). 
• Periodically groom sports fields and bocce ball courts with equipment and/or machinery provided. 
• Prepare baseball fields and bocce ball courts for league play. 
• Assist Maintenance Services personnel on assigned projects.  

• Perform duties within OSHA standards. 

QUALIFICATIONS 

Knowledge of: 

• Construction and maintenance materials, methods, and terminology. 

• The use, purposes and maintenance of hand tools; and the operation of light and moderately heavy power-driven equipment in performing duties. 

Ability to: 

• Understand and follow oral and written directions. 
• Ability to work both in a supervised and unsupervised environment. 
• Perform manual labor for extended periods of time; and operate under tight deadlines. 
• Lift equipment and materials up to 50 lbs. 
• Work flexible hours. 

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
