The City of Pacifica's Public Works Department is recruiting for a Building Maintenance Specialist. This is a full-time position with benefits and a compensation schedule range of $6529- $7,755 per month. This position works a 9/80 schedule, with every other Friday off. This position is included in a bargaining unit under Teamsters MISC Local No. 856.

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, to perform skilled carpentry, plumbing, mechanical and electrical work involving rough and finished construction, installation, and repair work

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the skilled level class in the building maintenance series.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receive general supervision from higher-level staff.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

• Operates woodworking machinery such as sanders, planers, and power saws in the construction of cabinets, shelves, stairways, and other wooden articles or structures;
• Hangs doors and installs wooden sashes;
• Lays finished flooring;
• Instels, remodels, repairs and maintains electric, HVAC, wiring and plumbing systems, furniture, roofs, and other general repairds to buildings;
• Installs wall board;
• Prepares walls for plastering and refinishing;
• Maintains and services carpentry equipment and tools;
• Repairs small motors, heaters, boilers, and broken water lines; may do occasional general public works construction and maintenance work.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required and other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of

• Materials and methods used in both rough and finished carpentry and most other areas of the construction field;
• Plumbing maintenance, installation, and finishing

 

Skill/Ability to

• Prepare rough sketches of work and estimates of materials and labor;
• Read blueprints and work according to plans and specifications;
• Carry out oral and written directions;
• Use and operate mechanical tools; ;
• Work with others.

 

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way of qualifying is:

Experience: Two years of progressively responsible experience performing public works building maintenance duties

Substitution: Completion of an accredited apprenticeship in the construction field or may substitute for two years.

Training: Graduation from high school and

LICENSE

Ability to drive and possess a valid California driver’s license.  May be required to qualify for and obtain a Class A or Class B driver’s license and be subject to random drug and alcohol testing under the Department of Transportation regulations.

Overview:

Are you an experienced Vegetation Maintenance professional with five or more years of experience and a valid Class A driver’s license? If so, we encourage you to consider this opportunity with Valley Water.

Maintenance Worker III is an advanced journey-level position responsible for operating a variety of light construction equipment in support of Valley Water’s maintenance and construction projects. This role provides agency-wide support for work on creeks, ponds, reservoirs, and other flood control facilities throughout the county.

Assigned to the Vegetation Field Operations Unit, this position performs a broad range of duties supporting Valley Water’s vegetation management programs. Responsibilities include vegetation control, integrated vegetation management, arboriculture, native plant revegetation, invasive plant management, and biotechnical erosion control on Valley Water properties.

This is primarily an outdoor position requiring work in varying and sometimes challenging environmental conditions, including heat, cold, and rain. Incumbents may also be required to respond to after-hours flood control emergencies, including nighttime callouts.

As a light equipment operator, the Maintenance Worker III must possess a valid Class A driver’s license to operate Valley Water commercial vehicles and to transport light equipment used in vegetation management and flood control projects. Daily equipment operation may include a compactor, water truck, tree truck and chipper, dump truck, and wheel loader. Equipment is used to haul vegetative debris, maintain native plant mitigation sites, support invasive plant management efforts, and assist with Valley Water’s sandbag operations.

This position also ultimately requires a Qualified Applicator’s Certificate (QAC) in Category C (Right-of-Way) and Category F (Aquatics) to mix and apply herbicides and calibrate spray equipment for vegetation control on Valley Water managed properties.

• Prepare soil and install native plant revegetation per established plans; maintain mitigation areas to achieve success criteria and meet monitoring requirements. 
• Install, adjust, and repair irrigation systems, including heads, lines, and controllers.
• Operate a variety of small power tools and light equipment, including spray equipment, mowers, chain saws, weed eaters, pole saw, hydro seeder, small trenchers, loader, compactors, water trucks, forklift, straw mulcher, auger, sandbag machine, and chipper; clean, adjust, and perform minor maintenance on light equipment to ensure proper operating condition. 
• Mix and apply herbicides, and calibration of spray equipment to control the growth of vegetation on and around flood control and water distribution facilities and rights of way. 
• Build or remove browse cages or other devices to keep wildlife from damaging native plant revegetation sites. 
• Build phytosanitary benches, fences, irrigation, etc. in support of native plant holding facility. 
• Participate in Valley Water’s sandbag program as needed. 
• Perform calculations of required work materials; document daily application of chemical use; photo documentation of work, complete work order dailies, best management practices checklists, surveys, forms, and time data entries. Maintain paper and electronic records of work performed.

Vegetation Field Operations Unit (Position Code 1059)
Valley Water Telework Program: Eligibility for telework will depend on the type of work performed, operational needs, and the ability for the employee to perform the essential functions of their job duties while teleworking. Employment with Valley Water requires employees to live within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in San Jose, California by their start date.

General:

• Operates various equipment involved in the maintenance of street, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, water distribution system, parks, street trees, or golf course.
• Operates equipment such as air compressors, pneumatic hammers, power activated hammers, chain saws, concrete saws, pipe cutters, sprayers, compactors, forklifts, painting and spraying equipment and rollers.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level, uneven and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movements in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when operating assigned equipment. Acute hearing is required in both the field and the office. The ability to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 70 pounds, such as a jackhammer, is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions, including wet, heat, and cold. The incumbent may be exposed to fumes, dust chemicals, biohazard materials and air contaminants. The nature of the work may also require the incumbent to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, work in confined spaces, drive motorized vehicles and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodations.

The base salary for this classification includes pay for potentially hazardous duties as listed in the essential job functions. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way:

Two years of maintenance experience equivalent to the level of Maintenance Worker I.

Knowledge and Abilities

• The basic techniques, equipment and materials used in the maintenance of water systems, sewers and/or streets, as required by the program to which assigned.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

The Seasonal Maintenance Worker position performs a variety of entry-level and unskilled labor, maintenance and repair tasks in various public works operations, such as park maintenance, landscape maintenance, creek and catch basin maintenance, street maintenance, and janitorial and facility maintenance.  Weekend availability is at times required for picnic area prep, general park clean-up, etc.

Work Schedule:

• Planning to hire for start date in May 2026

WOODLAND JOINT UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT HOST SITE

Woodland Joint Unified School District (WJUSD) is partnering with the City of Woodland to host two fellows as part of this year’s Civic Fellowship Program. The fellows will work on-site at WJUSD Business Services Office and receive day-to-day guidance and supervision from WJUSD staff while remaining part of the fellowship cohort and participating in program-wide activities.

 

This posting is for the Environmental Impact Analyst Fellow within the Business Services Department, specifically in the Maintenance, Operations and Facilities at WJUSD.  

 

Typical work hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday; and 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Friday, up to 40 hours per week.

 

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Woodland Joint Unified School District (WJUSD) Maintenance, Operations, and Facilities Department is seeking a motivated Civic Fellow to support the district’s sustainability and environmental stewardship efforts. This role offers a hands-on opportunity to gain experience in sustainability practices, facilities operations, and process improvement within a public education setting.

The Civic Fellow will assist in assessing current district practices related to recycling, waste reduction, and resource conservation. This may include reviewing recycling programs, observing waste management practices at school sites, and identifying opportunities to improve sustainability efforts. Working closely with Maintenance, Operations, and Facilities staff, the Fellow will help research best practices and develop practical recommendations to improve environmental outcomes and operational efficiency.

This fellowship provides practical exposure to sustainability planning, facilities management, and public sector operations, equipping participants with valuable skills in research, data analysis, environmental practices, and process improvement while contributing to the district’s commitment to responsible resource management.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general directions from the designated WJUSD host-site employee.

 

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate is a motivated and detail-oriented individual with an interest in sustainability, environmental science, public administration, and/or facilities operations. The Civic Fellow should be comfortable conducting research, making observations, and working collaboratively with staff across multiple departments.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong organizational and problem-solving skills, curiosity, and a willingness to learn about sustainability practices. Interest in environmental responsibility, waste reduction, or operational efficiency is desirable. Experience with research, data collection, or spreadsheets is helpful but not required.

This position is well suited for someone who enjoys identifying practical solutions, working on real-world challenges, and contributing to efforts that improve environmental responsibility within a large organization.

 

THE POSITION OBJECTIVES/GOALS

The goals of the position are to:

1. Assess current sustainability practices within Maintenance, Operations, and Facilities, including recycling programs, waste disposal practices, and resource conservation efforts.

 

2. Review existing procedures and practices related to recycling and waste reduction, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and environmental impact.

 

3. Research best practices from other school districts or public agencies related to sustainability, recycling programs, and waste reduction strategies.

 

4. Support the development of recommendations to improve recycling participation, reduce waste, and promote sustainable practices across district sites.

 

5. Assist in developing simple guidance materials or communication tools to help staff and students better understand sustainability practices.

 

6. Develop a working understanding of school district facilities operations and the role of sustainability in supporting efficient and responsible operations.

 

7. Contribute to continuous improvement efforts by identifying practical opportunities to strengthen sustainability practices and reduce environmental impact.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

• 4+ years of high school
• Local Woodland knowledge preferred
• Strong interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail 
• Strong computer skills
• Ability to build and maintain trust-based relationships with multiple internal and external stakeholders 
• Eligible to work in the United States
• Valid California driver license (if driving is an essential duty)

SALARY RANGE

$20.00 - $25.00 / hour dependent on experience.

The Position

The Environmental Compliance Inspector performs inspections and sampling of industrial, commercial and residential sources of discharge to the City’s sanitary sewer and storm drain systems to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations; inspects hazardous materials storage areas; responds to reports of illicit discharges; performs water quality testing; and conducts public outreach activities.  This classification is distinguished from all other technical and professional classifications in the City by its specialized assignments in support of a variety of environmental compliance programs.  The duties of the class involve courteous, effective and tactful interaction with the community to ensure compliance with wastewater and stormwater discharge regulations.  Persons assigned to this class perform or assist in performing all functions associated with the City’s Source Control (Pretreatment and Pollution Prevention) and Stormwater programs.  This position reports to the Regulatory Compliance Manager or higher level department personnel.

Some additional duties may also include the following:

• Enforce wastewater and stormwater discharge ordinances.
• Conduct on-site inspections of industrial and commercial businesses for compliance with the City’s sanitary sewer and stormwater ordinances.
• Initiate enforcement actions (e.g., issue notices of violation, administrative citations) to persons or businesses in violation of the City’s sanitary sewer and stormwater ordinances.
• Perform field investigations relative to water pollution incidents and/or complaints.
• Collect water samples and perform water quality testing in accordance with established standards and protocols.
• Calibrate and utilize sampling and/or monitoring equipment at appropriate locations; maintain and repair samplers and monitoring equipment.
• Work cooperatively with representatives of other City and County departments to ensure industrial, commercial, and residential conformance with City ordinances.
• Conduct field surveys as necessary to identify the source of or characterize (1) industrial discharges or excessive infiltration and inflow to the City’s sanitary sewer system; and (2) illicit discharges to the City’s storm drain system.
• Keep detailed inspection and follow-up records; maintain organized inspection files and records, both in hard copy and electronic formats.
• Assist with fulfilling wastewater and stormwater regulatory requirements, such as public outreach and education, trash load reduction efforts, and other regulatory requirements, as assigned.
• Measure landfill monitoring well water levels.
• Attend and participate in various technical committees of the San Mateo Countywide Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program.
• Attend workshops and training sessions to maintain job skills that are current with existing, new and changing regulations.
• Organize and participate in litter cleanups as required for Stormwater Permit compliance.
• Purchase required equipment and supplies as needed.
• Present pollution prevention information to various audiences as assigned.
• Work irregular or extended hours as necessary to respond to reports of illicit discharges, collect samples and/or conduct inspections.

The Ross Valley Sanitary District is seeking a motivated Collection System Worker willing to learn new skills and work with cutting edge technology to join our team!

Collection System Workers operate and maintain sanitary sewer infrastructure while providing excellent customer service to the Ross Valley community.

ABOUT THE POSITION

CSWs perform a variety of skilled - journey level work and manual labor in the operations, maintenance, and repair of sewer lines and related mechanical, hydraulic and hand-operated equipment. Collection System Workers are on a 9/80 schedule - Monday through Thursday from 6:00 am to 3:30 pm, with Fridays alternating between 6:00 am -2:30 pm and off work. All Collection System Workers also work on a rotating “on call” basis.

SAMPLE DUTIES OF THE CSW CLASSIFICATION INCLUDE:

• Participate in inspecting, cleaning, maintaining, constructing, and repairing of wastewater collection systems utilizing a variety of mechanical and specialized equipment including, but not limited to, rodders, CCTVs, high velocity cleaners, vacuum trucks, construction equipment, and related equipment.
• Perform a variety of manual tasks such as lifting and carrying heavy loads including material, equipment, and debris with assistance and utilizing equipment when appropriate.
• Inspect, troubleshoot, and maintain proper collection system operation using techniques and instruments including, but not limited to, closed‐circuit TV, smoke testing, dye testing, and related procedures.
• Participate in the removal and restoration of concrete and paved surfaces using a wide variety of construction equipment, hand and power tools.

• Conduct daily inspections of vehicles, hand tools, and equipment, perform lubrication and minor operating adjustments to ensure proper operation of vehicles, hand tools, and equipment.
• Perform basic building and grounds maintenance at collection system facilities. 
• Plan routine traffic control measures at work sites and perform non-routine traffic control under general supervision.
• Observe all safety precautions as required by regulatory agencies and the District; including using personal protective equipment and following hazardous communication policies and procedures.
• Participate in confined space entries including, but not limited to, atmospheric monitoring, hazard mitigation, and appropriate safety procedures.
• Respond to and investigate service calls or complaints concerning such matters as sewer odors, sewer trouble, and sewer back-ups, and make the necessary corrections.
• Participate in and, upon passing District criteria, direct the spill stoppage, containment, and cleanup of emergency situations and wastewater spills, including occasional 24/7 on-call duty as Primary or Secondary Stand-by.
• Perform a range of activities related to locating and marking sanitary sewer infrastructure and underground utility lines using a variety of equipment.
• Communicate and interact with the public, local government, and other utility personnel in a courteous, professional manner.
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Completion of the twelfth grade, or its equivalent.
• Two years general maintenance and construction experience
• Valid California Class "C" Driver's License
• Must have a satisfactory driving record and continue to meet District vehicle liability insurance company driving standards.

To be considered for the CSW II classification, two years of collection system maintenance and operations is required.

Licensing, Certification, and Registration:

Interested Candidates who do not have the certifications listed below are encouraged to apply and work toward acquiring the certifications prior to the end of the 12-month probationary period. Certification
training occurs on District time. Candidates must complete and possess required certifications to pass probation. By the end of probation, possession of the following licensures, certifications, and/or registrations
