Summary Description

Under immediate supervision performs semi-skilled to skilled maintenance, repair, and construction work assigned to the streets division; operates maintenance and construction tools and equipment; performs a variety of maintenance tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the entry level class in the Street Maintenance Operator series. This class is distinguished from the Street Maintenance Operator II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to workers in this series. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment on matters related to established procedures and guidelines as are positions allocated to the II level. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or non directly related work experience. Employees work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks.

Representative Duties

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

1. Handle complaints and answer questions from the public.
2. Remove blight and illegal dumps from city property such as parks, right of ways, roadways, alleys, walkways, sidewalks and refuse disposal. 
3. Remove debris, shrubbery, brush, trash, tires, appliances, electronics, and miscellaneous items.
4. Make minor adjustments on service equipment; maintain tools and equipment in working order.
5. Abates graffiti.
6. Maintain logs of daily activities.
7. Assist in other areas as needed.
8. Perform related duties as required.
9. Repair and replace street surfaces, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters including back filling trenches and evacuations.
10. Perform the maintenance, repair, construction, and installation work of streets, storm drain, parking lots, street lights, traffic striping, and traffic control signs and signals.
11. Remove hazards from the roadway and other public rights of way.
12. Operate a variety of motorized equipment and specialized maintenance equipment.
13. Perform repaving, patching, overlaying, chuck hole, and crack sealing repair of asphalt.
14. Perform underground service alert locating, marking and notification.
15. Lay out and install traffic signs and pavement markings.
16. Repair and maintain storm drain lift stations.
17. Conduct traffic count surveys.
18. Maintain storm detention ponds, including cleaning, repairing, and spraying weeds.
19. Respond to hazardous materials spills.

QUALIFICATIONS

Responsibilities include overseeing implementation of the Government Operations Climate Action Plan; Stormwater Municipal Regional Permit compliance; County employee commute alternatives program; Green Business Program; and adaptation and resilience planning to address impact such as extreme heat, drought, sea level rise, and wildfire smoke. • Support sustainability-related development review, including solid waste space planning, trash and recycling enclosure requirements, and coordination with other City departments.

City of Sunnyvale Field Technicians work in the field when assigned to the Compliance Inspection group in the Regulatory Programs Division. Field Technicians work under the supervision of the Senior Environmental Compliance Inspector primarily in the field collecting samples from industries, restaurants and the sanitary sewer collection system in order to determine compliance with local and federal discharge limits. The Field Technicians in Compliance Inspection work closely with the Environmental Compliance Inspectors to regulate dischargers. THE POSITION

The City is currently seeking General Maintenance Workers. This temporary position works with the City’s maintenance staff to perform: unskilled labor in the parks and landscape medians, street and sidewalk maintenance, street sign maintenance, and fleet building maintenance. Role description

The SFMTA Transit Division’s Maintenance of Way (MOW) Section is seeking an experienced, dependable, and strategic Deputy Chief Maintenance Officer (DCMO) of MOW Operations. The ideal candidate is highly self-motivated, professional, with extensive experience working at a large transit agency with both rail and trolley vehicles.

Under the direction of the Chief Maintenance Officer (CMO), the DCMO, stewards the agency’s fixed-guideway infrastructure integrity and drives operational excellence through comprehensive planning, performance management, and analytical decision-making. Leads the development and execution of complex, high-impact programs that ensure safe, reliable, and high-quality transit infrastructure in support of SFMTA’s multimodal operations. The DCMO advises and reports to the CMO on the state of critical guideway systems. The DCMO works closely with SFMTA engineering and project delivery stakeholders on capital projects, including review and recommendations related to all aspects of the projects. The DCMO provides direction on emergency response and resolution strategies for critical infrastructure incidents. The DCMO may be called upon to act on behalf of the CMO during their absence and cover the operational needs of the MOW section.

The DCMO oversees the implementation of robust preventive and corrective maintenance programs and provides strategic direction to MOW functional units Senior Operations Managers. The DCMO ensures all standard operating procedures and regulatory requirements are upheld and serves as representative to regulatory bodies and key stakeholders, including the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), Federal Transit Administration (FTA), Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), and San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH).

The MOW section of the SFMTA Transit Division directly oversees the fixed guideway infrastructure to ensure smooth and safe operations of our rail and trolley-bus lines. MOW is comprised of three functional operation units (Mechanical Infrastructure, Electrical Infrastructure, Facilities Maintenance) as well as Engineering, Compliance and Administration units. Together these teams directly support four of the five SFMTA transit modes including trolley bus, light rail, historic streetcar, and cable car. The mission of the SFMTA Transit Division is to provide safe, reliable, clean, efficient, accessible, and convenient public transportation to any destination in San Francisco. The Maintenance of Way Section works collaboratively with other SFMTA divisions and other city departments to provide services to our customers by operating and maintaining over 100 track miles of railway, 500 miles of electrical overhead and critical supporting systems.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties for the 9182 - Manager VIII:

• Provides high-level oversight on all day-to-day Maintenance of Way infrastructure functions.
• Provides direction to subordinate managers regarding activities and operations of their functional areas; assumes responsibility for improving the maintenance measures; coordinates with maintenance manager to maintain an effective maintenance program.
• Adjusts plans and programs activities to meet maintenance needs and emerging problems; establishes new programs, while continuing to address major departmental policies; plans, organizes, directs, controls, and reviews the operation of departmental functions and activities.
• Coordinates with MOW Administration Manager to monitor and make recommendations to the CMO on the efficiency and effectiveness of the departmental organization structure, staff assignments and service levels.
• Identifies and analyzes opportunities for improvement and implements those improvements.
• Contributes to budget development with strong justifications for proposals; manages and monitors operating budgets across multiple divisions.
• Oversees and supports Senior Operations Managers in planning, assigning, and directing the activities of a large group of subordinate personnel engaged in the maintenance and repair of transit infrastructure.
• Coordinates and directs subordinate supervisory personnel in the maintenance and repair of a variety of MOW fixed guideway facilities.
• Approves requisitions for materials and supplies; prepares and checks cost estimates and makes recommendations for repairs.
• Directs investigation of complaints and makes recommendations as to their adjustment; investigates fieldwork in process for compliance with proper procedures and methods; ensures that all facilities of the SFMTA MOW unit are inspected at regular intervals for compliance with safety laws, rules, regulations, and fire protection safeguards; confers with engineering personnel, Transit Division management, consultants, contractors and vendors on maintenance and repair projects, methods and procedures.
• Assists in the development and advancement of subordinates through training and effective use of employee development program; through subordinate supervisory personnel directs the work of janitorial, maintenance and repair crews and related support staff.

The 9182 – Manager VIII may perform other duties as assigned/required. 

How to qualify

1. Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; AND

2. Eight (8) years of full-time experience at a mass transit agency in the operation, maintenance and repair in any of the following:  power generating and related distribution systems; and/or electronic  systems; and/or  buildings, stations or passenger infrastructure; and/or  use of heavy construction equipment; and/or track work; and/or maintenance engineering, which must have included five (5) years at the second supervisory level or management level which includes responsibility for supervising staff; AND

3. Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Education Substitution: Additional years of qualifying experience (both second-level supervisory/management or non-supervisory) may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. One year (2,000 hours) will be considered equivalent to thirty (30) semester units/forty-five (45) quarter units.

2. One (1) year full-time experience is equivalent to 2,000 hours. (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time experience.

About the Position: Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen) is seeking three interns in the Natural Resources Department: one Water Resources Intern and two Conservation Biology Interns.  Under the guidance of our professional biological staff, these subject-matter focused internships will provide training in a broad range of common natural resource management techniques and environmental analyses.  Internships are open to applications from current students or recent graduates (within the last 12 months).  The expected start date for these positions is in April 2026. 

Water Resources Intern 

• The responsibilities of the intern will focus on a long-term aquatic habitat assessment and restoration project. Additional smaller projects may be assigned in other natural resource subject areas. Responsibilities will include scientific literature reviews, GIS mapping and modeling, data analysis, organizing and performing field work, writing reports, and science communication.  Successful candidates will have an understanding of the hydrologic or ecological principles of wetlands and streams, experience with ArcGIS Pro, the ability to collect, organize, and interpret data, and written communication skills.  Experience with data analysis in R, Python, or Microsoft Excel is preferred, and supplemental training time will be available. Experience with field work in remote areas is desirable.

Conservation Biology Intern (2 positions)

• The responsibilities of the intern include identifying plants in the field following plant survey and collection protocols; providing biological monitoring during construction and other ground-disturbing activities; GIS mapping, researching and preparing written summaries of local species, and collecting and organizing data in spreadsheets and databases. Requires the ability to identify plants and common wildlife of California as well as the skill of interpreting scientific reports and writing summaries. 

 

Basic Requirements: Current enrollment in a post-secondary education (e.g., associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree) program in a relevant field or a recent graduate. Internships are open to applications from current students or recent graduates (within the last 12 months). Successful candidates will have a background in biology, botany, ecology, geology, environmental studies or another related field; and some experience with field survey techniques. Experience with ArcGIS software and mapping natural resources with GPS equipment are a plus. Possession of a valid California driver’s license is required. Working Conditions/Schedule: This position will be divided between remote office work, on-site office work and field visits to survey, map, and collect field data. This position will operate in the Natural Resources Department at Midpen offices in Los Altos, California. Fieldwork is conducted in rural or mountainous Midpen open space areas, which may involve working alone in wildland areas and traversing rough, difficult terrain sometimes with poison oak, ticks and dense vegetation. Work may take place during inclement weather conditions. The selected individual will be required to work a minimum of three days on-site per week, and work may vary between field and office work. This is a temporary position working 20 – 40 hours per week, which will extend up to a total of 950 hours over a 6-9 month period (school schedules can be accommodated within regular business days/hours). Regular business is conducted Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.  This is a non-benefited position.
