The City of Rocklin is accepting applications for a Street Maintenance Worker to perform a wide variety of activities related to the construction, modification, maintenance, repair and operation of City streets, open spaces, right-of-way, creeks, and vegetation; provide maintenance support to the Streets Operations and Maintenance Division; and performs related work as required.

This is the journey-level class in the Street Maintenance series that performs the full range of duties required to ensure that the City’s public streets, sidewalks, storm drainage systems, open spaces, right-of-way, creeks, and vegetation provide the highest level of safety for public use. Incumbents are responsible for inspecting, and attending to assigned areas in a timely manner, and performing a wide variety of tasks in the construction and repair of City streets. This class is distinguished from the Senior Street Maintenance Worker in that the latter is responsible for technical and functional direction of lower-level streets operations and maintenance staff and is capable of performing the most complex duties assigned to the division.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Maintain municipal swimming pool pumps, filters, and related equipment; monitor and apply chemicals; refer to appropriate staff for further attention.

When assigned to Open Space Maintenance:

• Assist in vegetation management; assist in tree care, creek, preserve and natural resource maintenance.
• Maintain bike trails, power tools, and irrigation systems.
• Operate tree care equipment such as chippers, stump grinders, power tools and other related equipment.
• Perform data collection/GPS in preserves and open space areas, creeks, and the urban forest.
• Perform pesticide application.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

• Basic methods, tools, and equipment used in natural resource and grounds maintenance.
• Basic principles and practices of record keeping.
• Principles and practices of safety management.

Ability to:

• On a continuous basis, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, twist, and reach while operating equipment and perform maintenance and/or construction activities; perform heavy manual labor; operate a variety of hand and power tools used in maintenance activities; know and understand maintenance operations and/or construction projects, observe safety rules.
• Intermittently, analyze equipment problems; identify safety hazards; remember and locate equipment and tools; may interpret and explain work orders; sit while completing work papers; travel from job-site to job-site sitting in assigned vehicle or on equipment; lift or carry cement bags, fertilizer sacks and/or bags of chalk weighing 50 pounds or less.
• Learn to perform semi-skilled tasks in a variety of maintenance activities.

• Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade GED, or higher level degree; additional course work and training in maintenance, agronomy, horticulture, forestry, natural resource management or related field is highly desirable.

License or Certificate

• Possession of a valid California Class B driver’s license by date of application. 
• Possession of CPR and First Aid certificates within six (6) months of hire.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions including wet, hot and cold. The incumbent may use cleaning and lubricating chemicals which may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, operate hydraulic aerial devices, drive motorized vehicles and heavy equipment, work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions and often work with constant interruptions.

Working in the Community Development and Public Services Department, the Maintenance Worker II will perform a variety of unskilled, semiskilled and skilled light and heavy duty construction, maintenance and repair work involving public works, sewer and drainage systems, buildings, parking meters, and other facilities.

Maintenance Worker II

This is the journey level in the maintenance worker series. Positions assigned to this class are expected to perform semi‑skilled and skilled public works maintenance activities and to operate light and moderately heavy power‑driven equipment on a continuing basis. All positions allocated to this class require that an incumbent be able to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative to fulfill assigned tasks. Maintenance Workers II may also be expected to assist in the supervision and training of less experienced personnel.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Perform a variety of maintenance work in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, parks, sewers, storm drains, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and other public facilities.
• Operate power‑driven equipment such as skip loaders, dump trucks, water trucks and fork lifts.
• Break out old concrete work such as curbs, sidewalks, and gutters.
• Cut and prepare streets for patches, spread premix and oil, and rake asphalt.
• Replace, repair, couple, test, and backfill sewer lines.
• Clean and maintain basic tools used on the job.
• Paint traffic directional markings, such as crosswalks and safety loading zones.
• Fabricate, install, repair and replace street signs.
• Operate heavy power‑driven equipment on a relief or training basis.
• Water, mow, weed, trim, renovate, and fertilize grass and other landscaped areas.
• Rake leaves, clean walks, fields, courts, and other facilities.
• Spade and otherwise prepare ground around plants and shrubs, including mixing and applying fertilizers.
• Plant, trim and/or remove trees, flowers, and shrubs. 
• Load trimmings on trucks for disposal.
• Pick up rubbish and litter materials and perform general grounds cleaning.
• Operate power mowers, edgers, sewer rodders, and other hand-operated and power tools in the performance of maintenance and repair activities.
• Drive vehicles as required and assist in routine care and upkeep of such vehicles.
• Assist in moving and installing park and recreational equipment.
• Install, maintain, and repair sewer system mains, sprinkler systems, pipes and facilities.
• Inspect, maintain, and repair parking meter devices.
