The San José Fire Department's (SJFD) core mission is to serve the community by protecting life, property, and the environment through prevention and response. SJFD is a high-volume, all-hazards fire department providing fire suppression and rescue services that protects approximately 200 square miles, Advanced Life Support and Basic Life Support services as well as specialized operations including Urban Search and Rescue, Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting, and a Hazardous Material Unit with a Decontamination Unit. This is the trainee level class in the Firefighter series, responsible for becoming proficient in the understanding of lifesaving and firefighting methods within the SJFD. Through a specific program comprised of general and specialized education, focused training including extensive hands-on experience, Firefighter Recruits will learn diverse tasks, policies, procedures and standards within the SJFD. Incumbents will learn techniques in emergency medical services, rescue work, firefighting and other emergency services. Duties may involve considerable physical exertion and potential risk to health and safety. • Works collaboratively and engages with appropriate social service and law enforcement agencies to address un-housed abatement in Valley Water creeks and other properties; fulfills security requests to support field work.
• Administers contracts for security and security related services; reviews and evaluates compliance of contractor services with Valley Water’s contract standards and provisions; recommends improvements as required in procedures, techniques, and training.
• Provides staff leadership, oversight, guidance, and daily management of assigned unit; develops and implements goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for assigned programs; manages budgets and forecasts resource needs.

Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates' qualifications and experience.The Department of Public Works is seeking to fill a Maintenance Worker I position in the HVAC Shop located at the Central Service Yard within the Facilities Management Division. The Maintenance Worker I will support the basic preventative maintenance of the air conditioning work group. This position reports directly to the Air Conditioning Supervisor for various daily assignments. Working under immediate supervision and working with HVAC Staff and/or independently in mechanical rooms and on rooftops would be a regular occurrence.

Typical duties include but are not limited to:

• Performs preventive maintenance functions on Exhaust Fans, HVAC Package units and Air Handlers.
• Clean HVAC Cooling Towers and Mechanical Rooms.
• Install V-belts on HVAC Equipment.
• Uses general carpentry, mechanical and hand tools such as power saws, hand saws, drills, pliers, wrenches, hammers, screwdrivers, ladders and other tools and equipment.
• Installs air filters in various types of air conditioning equipment.
• Cleans aluminum finned condenser and evaporator coils.
• Performs minor semi-skilled carpentry and plumbing repair work.
• Maintains database records of their daily work with the Departments inventory management system.

This position may require working some weekends and/or holidays. Ability to perform the essential functions of this position will be determined by a post-offer medical examination conducted by City of San Jose Employee Health Services.

The HVAC SHOP maintains all City-Wide Facilities, including Police Buildings. About the Department

This City’s Building Division provides oversight and assistance towards the City's growth and development in relation to construction activity on private property within the City.  The goal is to ensure the safety of buildings and to support the health and wellbeing of all persons living and working in San Jose through the implementation of the State of California’s current building codes and laws.

Qualifications

Education: A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Architectural, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related field (e.g. Construction Management). An EIT certificate is not acceptable as replacement for the required Bachelor’s degree.

Experience: Associate Engineers working in the Building Division as plan reviewers must have four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in professional Civil Engineering work such as, Structural Engineering or Architectural Engineering with at least two (2) years of experience in design and construction of buildings.

Licenses: Possession of a valid State of California driver's license may be required. Other licenses or certifications may be required for positions. (Registration as a Civil Engineer or Architect with the State of California is preferred. Possession of ICC Plans Examiner certification is preferred).

Acceptable Substitution: A Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in the required professional engineering or architectural discipline may be substituted for one (1) year of professional engineering or architectural experience.

• Leads initiatives within an assigned policy portfolio, with a focus on policies related to affordable housing, homelessness, and neighborhood quality of life. Drives policy priorities through government and legislative process. Research best practices on assigned policy portfolio. 
• Gathers background information relative to issues pending before the City Council, most notably on affordable housing development, homelessness, and matters pertaining to neighborhood quality of life. 
• Drafts routine to complex correspondence, memoranda, and reports which articulate the Mayor’s housing policy initiatives. 
• Prepares or assists in preparation of speeches and talking points for the Mayor. 
• Develops and maintains positive working relationships with council offices, city staff, community organizations, residents, business community, non-profit organizations, and government agencies as they are key partners on policy and as a representative of the Mayor’s Office. 
• Coordinates arrangements for meetings, programs, or other civic functions on behalf of the Mayor. 
• Coordinates projects city-wide with City administration. 
• Attends meetings and community events with the Mayor, requires availability on evenings and weekends. 
• Analyzes a wide variety of materials on assigned projects, programs, and topics. 
• Responds to constituent inquiries and issues, resolves complaints, and interprets operating policies for residents of the community and other interested parties. 
• Attends and represents the Mayor at City-related meetings and activities, meeting with governmental agencies, private industry, and related meetings. 
• Supports committee and commission meetings, including, but not limited to the following: 
  • Neighborhood Services & Education Committee 
  • Community and Economic Development Committee 
  • Housing and Community Development Commission 
  • Planning Commission 
• Conducts public meetings and events on behalf of the Mayor and/or prepare summaries of public and private meetings, reports, memoranda, and other documents for review by the Mayor. 
• Provides support in community engagement efforts with neighborhood, district or city-wide business or community groups or associations and other interested parties regarding community concerns, issues, and priorities. 
• Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as required. 

Employees in this classification are not members of the classified civil service and appointment would be on a contract “at-will” basis and is for a specified period of time to be determined by the appointing Councilmember and does not extend past the end of the elected official's or appointing authority's term. Candidates must be willing to work evenings and weekends on occasion, and as exempt management employees, are not eligible for overtime compensation. This unclassified position requires a disclosure of outside investments, real property interest, income and business positions.
