DEFINITION
Under general supervision provides recreational and educational instruction and activities, social development, guidance and care for preschool and elementary age children by leading and assisting in the selection and coordination of a variety of activities and curriculum at a child care site.
This position is 8 hours per day and may require working at 2 sites to fulfill this time.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Child Care Teacher is responsible for implementing curriculum and supervising the children in the classroom. Child Care Teacher is distinguished from Child Care Lead Teacher in that the latter is provides supervision and guidance to the Child Care Teachers.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Direct supervision is provided by the Child Care Site Coordinator and Site Child Care Lead Teachers.
 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS – INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:
• Supervise children from age 2.5 to 14 years.
• Assist in the development of a diversified program of recreational games, sports, arts, crafts and other activities for elementary school children.
• Assist in the development of a diversified preschool curriculum of music, science, math, dramatic play, social studies, literature and recreational activities.
• Plan and lead a variety of activities appropriate to children of various age groups.
• Participate in and evaluate the effectiveness of activities and events.
• Instruct children in the safe and proper use of supplies and equipment.
• Instruct children in proper health and hygiene care.
• Assist Child Care Lead Teacher with managing children’s portfolios and monitoring student progress by using Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) and designated online educational platforms, such as Learning Genie.
• Assist Child Care Site Coordinator in preparing yearly State of California Desired Results reports.
• Assist in curriculum planning and project preparations.
• Participate in monthly staff meetings and in-person professional development trainings.
• Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces and furniture/toys daily.
• Change diapers/pull-ups as needed.
• Participate in cleaning and maintaining the facility and equipment.
• Inspect the site and equipment for potential safety hazards.
• Take corrective action to prevent injuries.

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, provide recreational and educational instruction and activities, social development, guidance and care for preschool and elementary age children by leading and assisting in the selection and coordination of a variety of activities and curriculum at a childcare site.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Child Care Lead Teacher is the lead teacher in the classroom.  Child Care Lead Teachers may also be asked to temporarily oversee a school site when a Site Coordinator is offsite.  If a situation arises where a Site Supervisor is unavailable for an extended period of time a Child Care Lead Teacher with a Site Supervisor Permit will be asked to act as a temporary Site Supervisor.

General supervision is provided by the Child Care Site Coordinator. Child Care Lead Teacher  supervises the classrooms to which they are assigned, including Child Care Aides, Associate Teachers, Teachers, and Full-time Teachers that are assigned to their programs.

DEFINITION: Under general supervision from Preschool Instructor(s) and the Recreation Supervisor, the preschool aide assists in planning, organizing, and implementing preschool programming for children ages 2-5 years old in a range of classes from introductory drop-off preschool classes to Kindergarten preparedness preschool classes. Program hours are M-F PM 8:30am – 1:00pm. Approximately 20– 23 hours a week. Preschool aides must be willing and able to both take direction from the Preschool Instructor and work independently when fulfilling tasks. Substitute and on-call positions also available.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Child Care Instructor I:

• Completion of a minimum of  six (6) units of Early Child Education (ECE) courses and currently working toward the completion of twelve (12) units of ECE courses.
• Six (6) months working with children.
• AA in recreation, education, or related field preferred

Child Care Instructor II:

• Completion of twelve (12) Early Childhood Education (ECE) courses.
• One (1) year working with children in a group setting.

Description 

Under the general direction from the Recreation Supervisor, the Recreation Specialist – Enrichment is responsible to act as a liaison to the Department’s flourishing enrichment (after school) program and ensure the smooth operation of programming for preschool and elementary aged classes both on and off-site. This includes the elementary-aged afterschool programs Supervised Play at Old Mill Elementary School and Center of Play at the Mill Valley Community Center. This position requires a high level of customer service, attention to detail, marketing prowess, evaluation and oversight of programs, independent contractors, and part-time staff, and the ability to build relationships throughout the community. The Recreation Specialist- Enrichment will assist other staff in the Youth and Teens Division for seasonal programs as needed. 

The ideal candidate will have significant experience working in elementary aged programs, ideally in a fast-paced and dynamic setting. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in early childhood education, recreation, or a related field with a minimum of two years of experience in delivering kindergarten, elementary and/or youth programming, etc. is preferred.

• Facilitates recreation activities for specific age group: Transitional Kindergarten through 5th Grade. 

• Organizes, implements, directs, supervises and/or promotes specific programs and activities. 

• Processes program payments promptly and thoroughly. 

• Programs enrichment classes for each season (Fall/Winter/Spring/Summer).  

• Participates in the preparation and administration of assigned program budget. 

• Works with local School District, PTAs, and community groups in developing, promoting, and providing programs and activities.

CHILD CARE AIDE

The City of San Rafael, Child Care Division is accepting applications for Child Care Aide to work in our School-Age Program.  We are looking for people who are available Monday thru Friday from 2:00 – 6:00 pm.  This is a great part-time position for someone who attends school in the morning.  No weekend work required!

This position performs the following essential job duties (including but not limited to):

• Assist Director and Instructors in planning and implementing activities.
• Assist in the supervision of children at the child care center or on outings/trips.
• Assist in the cleaning and maintenance of equipment and materials.
• Assist in the preparation and cleanup of snacks.
• Other related duties as assigned.

• Child guidance methods.
• Developmentally-appropriate practices and curriculum.

• Accept direction from supervisor.
• Establish and maintain effective relationships.
• Work as scheduled.

• Some experience with school age children, preferably 6 months.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Department of Justice and FBI fingerprint clearance
• Prefer possession of a valid California Driver’s License
• Must have a current TB test clearance

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to perform physical activities such as but not limited to lifting or carrying children or heavy items (up to 40 lbs.) unassisted, reaching, bending, standing, or walking. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, twist, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Schedule Availability:

Shift Lengths:
Shifts range from 4-8 hours per day depending on program needs and employee availability.

Hours:
This is a part-time, variable hour position and employees may work up to a maximum of 999 hours per fiscal year. 

Schedule assignments will be determined based on operational needs and availability.
