The City of Lincoln is hiring for the seasonal and part-time position of Lifeguard within the Recreation Department.  This position performs a variety of duties related to providing swimming instruction and lifeguard duties; candidates must be able to work various days, weekends and evenings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Maintain constant surveillance as assigned to safeguard swimmers from drowning and other accidents.

The City of Lincoln is hiring for the seasonal and part-time position of Assistant Pool Manager within the Recreation Department.  This position may require evening, weekend, or other shift work.  Under direction, this position will assist in the overall operations of a swimming pool facility, and its assigned temporary employees; to assist in the planning, organizing, coordination, development, implementation, promotion, and evaluation of aquatic activities and programs for all ages.

The Assistant Pool Manager is the working lead class responsible for assisting with the daily operations of the pool and aquatics program. This class is distinguished from the next higher classification of Pool Manager in that the latter has overall responsibility for the pool operations, programs, and staff.  The Assistant Pool Manager receives direction from the Pool Manager; exercises indirect supervision over temporary and seasonal aquatics personnel; and may exercise direct supervision in the Pool Manager’s absence.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Include but are not limited to the following:

• Assist in monitoring and supervision of the day-to-day operations of the aquatics program, which includes direction to lifeguards/instructors; enforce and explain pool regulations and policies; administer first aid and perform emergency rescues.
• Maintain proper health specifications, in restroom and locker areas and take all safety precautions.
• Manage the daily opening and closing of the facility.
• Assist in the oversight of proper sanitation and maintenance of pool water; ensure cleanliness of restrooms, dressing rooms, and public areas; report maintenance conditions affecting facility operation and security.
• Assist in the oversight of the safe and proper operations of assigned pool; ensure pool rules and safety guidelines are followed; maintain order with disruptive patrons and exercise crowd control where warranted; and, refer escalated issues to assigned supervisor or proper authorities.
• Exercise lead/indirect supervision over all assigned staff including temporary and seasonal staff, independent contract instructors, and volunteers. Exercise direct supervision in the Pool Manager’s absence.
• Participate in the recruitment and hiring of temporary, part-time, or seasonal aquatics staff as required.
• Promote and enforce water safety procedures; effect swimming rescues; render first aid and CPR as required; ensure the safety of pool users and enforce all user rules and policies of the department.
• Complete, review, and file accident and incident reports; assist with follow-up related to reports; purchase, check, and maintain first aid equipment; perform daily safety checks and inspections of the facility and all equipment.
• Assist with employee schedules; complete reports on chemical tests; assist with the training of lifeguards and other aquatics staff; verify and check aquatics staff timecards; submit timecards to Pool Manager for approval; coordinate and facilitate staff meetings; assist with special events.
• Work with maintenance staff to ensure that pool facility maintenance procedures are followed.
• Keep the pool, pool deck, and auxiliary buildings/areas clean and free of litter and debris.
• Act as the Pool Manager in her/his absence.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Position requires sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, grasping, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The need to lift, drag and push files, paper and equipment weighing 25 pounds or more is also required. The incumbent may use cleaning chemicals, or pool chemicals, which may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions, including wet, hot and cold and is required to swim.

KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILLS

THE POSITION

Works under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor or their designee to prepare and serve appropriate quantities of food to meet menu requirements. Operates simple food service support equipment in a safe and effective manner including preparation, cooking, and washing assignments, assembly and service bar, storage and refrigeration, utensils and any equipment as part of the daily routine. Maintain high standards of quality in food production, orderly appearance of work area, sanitation, and safety practices. May deliver items to guests maintaining appropriate customer service skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Prepare meats for cooking by cutting or trimming.
• Clean, cut, chop and slice food for preparation.
• Cook meat, vegetables, soups, and other foods according to recipe or other instructions meeting the concession menu.
• Maintain and oversee kitchen safety standards, food handling practices, and the disposal of garbage.
• Clean kitchen utensils and equipment and maintain cooking area in clean and safe condition.
• Train Staff in food preparation, service, and clean-up duties; and safety and sanitation practices.
• Ensure proper storage and temperature of foods for serving.
• Inventory perishables and dry goods weekly and rotate inventory, as necessary.
• Maintain up-to-date records and prepare related reports as required.
• Order supplies for menu as required and assist in the receiving and storing of food items and supplies.

THE POSITION

Collects fees from public swimming pool patrons, register participants in aquatics classes, and perform a variety of related general clerical duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

•     Collect fees from public swimming pool patrons and aquatics class registrants, and issue pool passes.

•     Complete daily attendance and cash receipt report forms.

•     Answer the telephone, provide information to callers and write messages as needed; assist customers at the front counter.

•     Perform general clerical work such as issuing receipts, photocopying, and filing.

•     Perform light maintenance work such as emptying wastebaskets, sweeping, and opening and closing the office.

•     May provide minor first aid to patrons; may provide assistance to other pool staff in emergency situations.

•     Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.

•     Perform other duties as assigned. 

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services is accepting applications for Recreation Leaders for our various park locations. The following locations have positions available:

• Community Gardens

• Happy Hollow Park & Zoo
• Lake Cunningham Action Sports Park

Recreation Leaders are an intricate part of our parks operations, requiring the highest level of customer service, reliability, teamwork and interpersonal skills, and communication skills. These positions are part-time, unbenefited with a limit of 19 hours per week or a maximum of 1,040 hours per calendar year. Schedules will vary seasonally and Recreation Leaders will be placed in assignments based on their availability. There is no guarantee of hours or longevity and staff may be unassigned. Availability is needed during park operations on weekdays and weekends between the hours of 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM, holidays, and some evening hours may be required.
Recreation Leaders fill many positions within the PRNS Department and are tasked with multiple responsibilities including but not limited to:

• Conducting both indoor and outdoor recreation activities for youth, adults, older adults, and/or individuals with disabilities.
• Training and leading Community Services Aides and volunteers   
• Monitoring safety of facilities and activity participants
• Managing front desk at community centers by assisting customers, answering phones, and providing some office support such as database entry
• Providing facility coverage for site rentals, fitness rooms, teen centers, parking booths, etc.
• Preparing publicity materials such as calendars, flyers, brochures, etc.
• Assisting in recruiting and coordinating volunteer/community events
