THE POSITION

DEFINITION

To perform a variety of duties related to the overall operations of a swimming pool facility, programs and its assigned temporary employees.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Plan, organize and supervise swimming activities and aquatics programs at assigned pool; ensure that swim lessons are taught to city standards.
• Oversee proper sanitation and maintenance of pool water; ensure cleanliness of restrooms, dressing rooms and public areas; report maintenance conditions affecting facility operation and security.
• Oversee the safe and proper operation of assigned pool; ensure pool rules and safety guidelines are followed; maintain order with disruptive patrons and exercise crowd control where warranted; and refer escalated issues to assigned supervisor or proper authorities.
• Complete written reports and records as required; organize and monitor equipment inventory of assigned facility.
• Serve as Aquatics Specialist I/II/III and Cashier I/II as needed.
• Promote and enforce water safety procedures; effect swimming rescues; render first aid and CPR as required.
• Supervise assigned temporary staff; schedule, train and monitor staff relative to lifeguard duties and swim instruction; review assigned staff payroll records for accuracy.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.

Experience and Training

Experience:

• Two full seasons of lifeguard or swim instructor experience including one season of experience performing duties similar to that of an Assistant Pool Manager with the City of Roseville.

Training:

• Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, GED, or higher level degree.

License or Certificate

• Possession of a valid California driver’s license by date of appointment.
• Possession of a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or equivalent certificate by date of appointment.
• Possession of a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certificate by date of appointment.
• Possession of a current American Red Cross Title 22 First Aid for Public Personnel certificate by date of appointment.

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen) Ranger is a challenging generalist position offering a wide variety of responsibilities and opportunities to exercise independent judgment while working on Midpen  preserves. Rangers patrol on foot, in all-terrain vehicles, on motorcycles, and in four-wheel drive patrol trucks. Peace Officer Standards for Rangers: Applicants must meet the standards for being a California Peace Officer as outlined in Government Code Section 1031. Probationary Ranger employees must complete Midpen’s requirements for training of Peace Officers by attending and successfully completing a Midpen approved law enforcement academy by the end of their probationary period, unless they have recently successfully passed an equivalent academy, and possess or have the ability to obtain a California Penal Code 832 certificate.

Basic Job Requirements: Must have the ability to enforce pertinent laws and regulations; administer first aid and CPR; operate and maintain various power tools and equipment; operate emergency patrol vehicles and two-way radios; communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; and perform wildland fire suppression duties as needed.

Education & Experience: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Equivalent to an Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in law enforcement, resource management, natural sciences, or a related field and one (1) year of experience in the protection, operation, or maintenance of a park, forest, public recreation area, or the equivalent. Experience or training in wildland firefighting and law enforcement is desirable.

Working Conditions: Most work is outdoors within Midpen’s open space lands with exposure to inclement weather conditions. This requires the ability to patrol on foot, off trail, and in rugged terrain.  Also requires the ability to perform all related emergency services and maintenance and construction work on Midpen lands. Shift schedules may include evening, weekend, and holiday hours.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, this position is assigned to the Aquatics Division of the Recreation Department at the City of Pacifica.  The Head Swim Coach teaches the fundamentals of competitive swimming in a positive environment.  The duties include coaching the swim team, providing instruction and guidance during training sessions, supervising several assistant swim coaches, and performing other related work as required.

The Head Swim Coach is responsible for working with the Recreation Coordinator to ensure the development of each individual swimmer while encouraging sportsmanship, healthy competition, and attendance at meets.  This position is expected to enforce the discipline of regular swimming practices consisting of technique demonstration and drills along with age-appropriate motivation, encouragement and fun.

Essential Functions of the Position

• Attend all scheduled swim meets; supervise all swimmers; coordinate volunteers (in conjunction with the PSL Parent Board); create all swim meet line-ups and information.
• Coordinate practice group scheduling and assign athletes to appropriate training groups; maintain appropriate records for team members and meets.
• Plan, prepare, and conduct team practices; develop strong team building qualities through demonstrated leadership.
• Attend all swim team staff meetings; attend all registration and parent meetings; coordinate and attend all swim team special events and fundraisers.
• Actively coach swimmers in competitive stroke training to improve technique.
• Recruit new swimmers to program.
• Have basic computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel or related programs.
• Possess excellent customer service skills in all forms of communication.
• Meet all safety and operational requirements in the facility; abide by the USA Swimming Code of Conduct and Park, Beaches & Recreation policies and procedures.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Receives direction from the Aquatics Recreation Coordinator.  Exercises supervision over all assistant swim coaches and all swim team participants.

Qualifications

Minimum two-year history of coaching on a competitive swim teams is mandatory, plus a minimum two-year history as a swimming instructor.  Familiarity with the USA Swimming rules and local swim conference rules and regulations.  Certification in Safety Training for Swim Coaches or equivalent is required, if candidate does not currently possess this certification they must obtain it within 30 days of employment.  Current lifeguarding and C/PRO certification required.  Current and valid California driver’s license required.  Experience as a head coach of a competitive swim team is highly desirable.  A Bachelor’s degree or an Associate Degree in physical education, recreation, or a related field also is desirable.

All employees of the Parks, Beaches & Recreation Department that work with children in any capacity need to successfully pass the Department of Justice fingerprint requirements prior to employment.  All employees must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.

DEFINITION

To perform semi-skilled and skilled duties in the trimming, maintenance, and planting of City trees.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the journey level class in the Tree Trimmer series and is distinguished from the I level by the ability to perform the full range of duties assigned with only occasional instruction or assistance as unusual or unique situations arise. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level.

This class is distinguished from the Senior Tree Trimmer in that the latter performs advanced journey level work and provides technical and functional supervision to assigned staff.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives immediate supervision from an assigned supervisor; receives technical and functional supervision from the Senior Tree Trimmer or Arborist Technician.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Using aerial lift and through skilled climbing, trim and structurally prune trees to provide clearance of streets, sidewalks, signs and lights as well as to ensure the continued health of the trees.
• Perform tree trimming using chainsaws, hand/pole saws and loppers; remove trees, stumps, hangers, branches and related debris; perform stump grinding and plant healthcare duties.
• Plant, spray, stake and maintain trees on City owned property and in the public right-of–way.
• Operate tree trimming and maintenance equipment such as boom trucks, chippers, stump grinders, and power tools, such as chain saws and hydraulic loppers.
• Clean, sharpen, maintain tools, ropes, and other tree maintenance equipment.
• Collect debris from tree trimming and removal operations into piles, using shovels, rakes, or other tools.
• Load debris onto trucks or into chipper and haul it away for disposal.
• Inspect trees for public safety and wildlife; respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
• Identify equipment needs for each assigned project.
• Utilize proper safety precautions related to work performed.
• Work multiple shifts during emergencies, seasonally caused circumstances, or special projects in varying climate and temperature conditions.
• Perform general natural resource maintenance work when not assigned to tree trimming duties.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
• Operate tree trimming and maintenance equipment such as boom trucks, chippers, stump grinder, dump trucks, and power tools, such as chain saws and hydraulic loppers.

THE POSITION

The Human Resources Department is accepting applications for the temporary and part-time position of Tree Trimmer I in the Parks, Recreation & Libraries Department. While the current vacancy is for a 1000 hour position, this recruitment may be used to fill 1500 hour positions in the future. The work schedule is from Monday to Friday, 6:30 am – 3:00 pm.

DEFINITION

To perform semi-skilled and skilled duties in the trimming, maintenance, and planting of City trees.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry level class in the Tree Trimmer series.  Positions in this class typically have little or no directly related work experience and work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks. The Tree Trimmer I class is distinguished from the II level by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to the II level. Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to general supervision as procedures and processes of assigned area of responsibility are learned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives immediate supervision from an assigned supervisor; receives technical and functional supervision from the Senior Tree Trimmer or Arborist Technician.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Using aerial lift and through skilled climbing, trim and structurally prune trees to provide clearance of streets, sidewalks, signs and lights as well as to ensure the continued health of the trees.
• Perform tree trimming using chainsaws, hand/pole saws and loppers; remove trees, stumps, hangers, branches and related debris; perform stump grinding and plant healthcare duties.
• Plant, spray, stake and maintain trees on City owned property and in the public right-of–way.
• Operate tree trimming and maintenance equipment such as boom trucks, chippers, stump grinders, and power tools, such as chain saws and hydraulic loppers.
• Clean, sharpen, maintain tools, ropes, and other tree maintenance equipment.
• Collect debris from tree trimming and removal operations into piles, using shovels, rakes, or other tools.
• Load debris onto trucks or into chipper and haul it away for disposal.
• Inspect trees for public safety and wildlife; respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
• Identify equipment needs for each assigned project.
• Utilize proper safety precautions related to work performed.
• Work multiple shifts during emergencies, seasonally caused circumstances, or special projects in varying climate and temperature conditions.
• Perform general natural resource maintenance work when not assigned to tree trimming duties.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

• Safety rules and work practices used in operating and maintaining tree maintenance equipment.
• Uses and purposes of tools and equipment related to tree trimming and maintenance.
• Basic methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in trees maintenance.
• Basic principles and practices of record keeping.

Ability to:

• Perform skilled tree trimming and maintenance work; climb trees at heights necessary to perform trimming activities.
• On a continuous basis, know and understand tree trimming and removal operations; observe safety rules.
• Intermittently, sit at a desk while studying or preparing reports; twist to reach equipment or materials; stand, walk, balance, stoop, kneel, climb, crawl, and bend while performing tree trimming and removal duties; perform simple grasping and fine manipulation; and lift or carry weight of 50 pounds or less.
• Use and operate vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment, hand power tools, mechanical equipment, and equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner.
• Prepare and maintain simple records of activities.
• Perform heavy physical labor.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
• Community clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Experience and Training

Experience:

• No experience is required; experience in basic methods and techniques used in tree trimming and maintenance and/or ISA best management practices for tree planting and pruning is highly desirable.

Training:

• Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, GED, or higher level degree.

License or Certificate

• Possession of a valid California driver’s license by date of appointment.

To perform a variety of duties related to officiating soccer games or tournaments.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Officiate games or tournaments; enforce appropriate official rules and regulations of games in an efficient manner.

THE POSITION 
San Mateo County Parks system consists of 22 parks, historic sites, and regional trails. The properties have a wide variety of habitats, species, and visitor use.

The Natural Resource Management Program is focused on protecting and enhancing all natural resources within the park system. This includes habitat restoration, vegetation and invasive species management, native and invasive species mapping, wildlife monitoring, and volunteer stewardship activities.

The intern would report to Coyote Point Recreation Area or Redwood City, but will need to report to other park locations for a variety of events and work activities.

NOTE: This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.

Examples Of Duties: 
A Natural Resource Management Intern would be responsible for:

• Assisting with and co-leading volunteer habitat restoration stewardship activities and events, including event set-up and clean-up.
• Establishing and identifying new locations for future volunteer sites, including landscape reconnaissance, rare native plant and weed mapping, and weed management using manual, mechanical, and chemical control methods.
• Conducting other high-priority habitat enhancement and data collection activities throughout the park system, including the implementation of revegetation and weed suppression experiments and wildlife monitoring.
• Coordination with other Natural Resource Management, Volunteer Coordinator, and Interpretive staff.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to learn new skills, ability to follow directions, a good attitude, effective communication skills, ability to work in a team, strong organization skills, and a high attention to detail when conducting field tasks and recording and entering data. The candidate will have the ability to work full days outdoors in all weather conditions and variable terrain. Exposure to inclement weather, poison oak, and insects is anticipated. This position requires driving to different park locations, pulling a trailer, using County Radios, and manual labor including handling power-driven tools. This position will also involve herbicide application under the supervision of a licensed applicator.

This is a full-time position that will require the Natural Resource Management Intern to work the following hours:
Tuesday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Wednesday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Thursday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Friday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Saturday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.  
 

QUALIFICATIONS 

• Current students with at least one year of college level education in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Forestry, Biological Sciences, or related fields. Recent graduates are also welcome to apply.
• 1-2 years’ experience in related work in lieu of education will be considered.
• General knowledge of plants, and ability to learn and identify plant species
• Interest and enthusiasm for the environment.
• CPR/First Aid certified (may be able to attend parks training).
• Must have a valid California Driver's License.
