Summary:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of custodial tasks and provides oversight of rental groups, in accordance with District policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assist patrons and prospective participants on the phone and in-person
• Assist permit groups with set-up and breakdown of tables, chairs, and other equipment
• Promptly open and unlock facilities or close and secure facilities as scheduled
• Complete facility condition forms following permit group use and incident reports as needed
• Notify management concerning need for major repairs or additions
• Turn athletic field lights off and on for sports groups
• Sell and scan admission tickets special events and/or theater performances

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• Sweep floors, vacuum carpets, and dust or polish furniture, fixtures, and equipment
• Wash windows, clean restrooms, replenish supplies, and sanitize high touch areas often
• Empty waste receptacles and remove any trash or debris found throughout facility
• May assist with conducting recreation classes
• Perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:
Minimum age of 18 years old with a High School Diploma (or GED). At least 250 hours of experience in customer service or a related field preferred.

Certificates and Licenses:

• Proof of negative Tuberculosis (TB) skin test prior to first day of employment
• CA Driver’s License and Proof of Insurance
• Adult and Pediatric First Aid & CPR/AED within 90 days of hire

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to communicate effectively in English in both written and oral form. Ability to write routine correspondence using correct spelling and grammar. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Ability to apply common sense and exercise good judgement in solving problems. Certificates and Licenses:

• Develop, conduct, and participate in various athletic, craft, social, cultural, and instructional activities
• Prepare facilities for programming, special events, or rental group usage
• Greet visitors, direct participants to the appropriate location, and respond to general inquiries
• Ensure safety of environment and equipment for staff, volunteers, participants, and visitors
• May open or close and secure facilities in compliance with District policies and procedures
• Issue and collect recreation equipment and supplies used by instructors, participants, or visitors
• Supervise special events, field trips, and other group activities

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• Coordinate and participate in promotional activities and community events
• Modify and adapt activities specific to specialized programs or populations, as appropriate
• May assist with transportation in specialized programs
• Perform other related duties as assigned

A Responsible individual is needed to maintain and enforce proper city procedures and policies in our parks, parking lots and ball fields.   Park monitors will perform park inspections and enforce park policies, supervise patrons, renters and daily facility management. Park monitors and parking lot attendants must stand firm on policies, control diverse situations and always possess a friendly disposition and professional demeanor.  Park monitors and parking lot attendants must also have the ability to communicate and respond to customer service concerns, handle all weather conditions and be reliable with a strong work ethic and personal integrity. The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Aquatics Specialist II (Non-Career intermittent) in the Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department! In this role, you will have the opportunity to provide instruction in swim and serve as a lifeguard at assigned swimming facilities. You'll teach swim skills to people of all ages and supervise the conduct of swimmers in order to maintain health and safety standards. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is: 
A minimum of two (2) summer seasons working as a lifeguard or swim instructor.

Must possess a valid Water Safety Instruction Card which requires an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate, and successful completion of first aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training.

  • Under general supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, Senior Lifeguard or Pool Manager, the Lifeguard performs swim instructor duties in teaching swimming and water safety courses, enforcing City public swimming pool rules and monitoring pool patron conduct.  Lifeguards must have knowledge and be physically able to perform emergency rescue and lifesaving techniques. • Senior Lifeguard (Senior Recreation Leader) - $18.24 - $22.22/hourly
  • Under general supervision from the Recreation Coordinator or Pool Manager, must be able to perform all duties as a Lifeguard and know operational rules and protocols of Dan Oden Swim Complex. Must have basic customer service practices and knowledge of all current safety standards and information related to aquatics. Must assist in teaching swimming lessons and lifeguarding.

• Pool Manager (CRS Program Manager) - $19.93 -$24.22/hourly
  • Under general supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, able to perform all duties and responsibilities of a Lifeguard and Senior Lifeguard, assist in staff meetings and lifeguard trainings, direct contact for participants to explain pool rules, policies, and procedures. Pool Manager assists in implementing and scheduling staff, program, and services.

The Position

This new Urban Landscape Manager will have a primary focus on park capital maintenance projects and all phases of park maintenance contractor service agreements under the direction of the Park Superintendent. Together both of the Urban Landscape Managers will manage park staff and contractors in the care and upkeep of parks, medians, municipal landscape and hardscape, trails and open space. This includes assisting the Park Superintendent with administrative duties, short and long-term planning, organizing and supervising park maintenance operations and functions.
 
Examples of Duties

• Oversee assigned park maintenance capital projects and ensure all purchasing and legal requirements are met.
• Plan, schedule, organize, manage and assign work within sections of the Park Maintenance Division.
• Supervise employees as needed in performing park maintenance activities.
• Assign, train, direct, evaluate and assist in selecting subordinate staff.
• Monitor and prepare employee performance evaluations and plan staff development.
• Determine the needs and direct the development of staff training in work techniques, safety and other work-related matters.
• With assistance from the Park Superintendent, review, mediate and resolve personnel problems, and administer discipline.
• Meet regularly with Park Superintendent to discuss program issues and receive input and/or direction on pertinent issues. When required, develop related recommendations to resolve problems.
• Develop and maintain work productivity measures and direct operational changes.
• Review field activities, confer with staff and direct the corrections of any noted deficiencies or deviations from accepted practices.
• Assigned projects should be completed within approved budget and timeline and any variance need to be communicated to the Superintendent for approval.
• Provide input for operating and capital improvement plan budget development.
• Prepare estimate of maintenance impacts due to park or landscape improvements.
• Monitor expenditures to ensure conformance with the Division’s budget.
• Prepare bid materials, contracts and specifications for the maintenance of City owned landscaped areas.
• Assist with consultants’ selection, contract administration and inspection of the work of contractors.
• Determine the type of work to be done, and the personnel and equipment required to complete the work.
• Coordinate with other departments as needed on assigned capital projects.
• Interpret and communicate appropriate application of policy and operational procedures.
• Confer with staff to review and monitor operations and program implementation.
• Coordinate activities of the Parks and Urban Landscape functions with those of other City units and outside agencies.
• Maintain  records and  prepare  a variety  of  complex  reports  and  memoranda  on  every  aspect  of  the section including maintenance reports on proposed landscape development projects and chemical reports for the County Agricultural Commissioner
• Other related duties as assigned.
