The Police Cadet is a temporary position intended to help jumpstart young people with an interest in law enforcement careers.

Since Police Cadets are expected to use this position to examine career opportunities and choose a career path, the City of Glendora will not retain an employee as a Police Cadet past the age of 25 years.

Under direction, the Police Cadet performs varied functions within the Police Department which require communicating with the public and City employees.

Some of the typical duties of the Police Cadet include but are not limited to, the following:

• Operates the telephone switchboard
• Operates police radio and computer systems
• Prepares minor reports
• Gives tours of the police facility
• Serves subpoenas
• Coordinates witnesses for court appearances
• Performs other related duties as assigned

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be graduation from high school or equivalent, and enrollment in college in a course of study directed at earning a degree in a field related to law enforcement.

Special Requirements:

Possess a valid Class "C" California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record; be 18 to 21 years of age at time of hire; hearing must be normal and without defect.  For candidates wearing glasses, vision must be 20/70 uncorrected, correctable to 20/20; for candidates who have successfully worn soft contact lenses for at least one year, vision must be 20/200 uncorrected, correctable to 20/20; normal color, peripheral vision, and night vision (as defined by P.O.S.T. guidelines).  Applicants must be willing to take an oath or affirmation of loyalty, sign a Child Abuse Reporting Admonishment and a California Department of Justice Security Agreement.  Cadet applicants must pass a written exam, panel interview, administrative interview, background investigation, polygraph, and a physical and drug screen test before being hired.  Cadet positions work variable part time hours, including nights and weekends, typically around school schedules.  Cadets are required to maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.0 (“C” grade) for all courses taken.  Grades are required to be submitted at the end of each semester/quarter and will be reviewed during bi-annual evaluations.

Selection Process:

All applications will be reviewed and evaluated.  Those candidates who are determined to be best qualified based upon the information presented on the application materials will be invited to continue in the selection process which may include a qualifying written or performance evaluation and will include an interview weighted 100%.

This position is a part-time, non-benefited position.  Work schedules average (20) hours per week.  Based on the needs of the Police Department, work hours may vary.  The ability to work all assigned shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays is required.  There is currently one position open in both the Records and Traffic Division.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Records Division:  Under direct supervision, the selected individual is assigned to the Records Division in the Seal Beach Police Department.  Duties include:   receives requests for information from other City departments, outside government agencies, private organizations, news media and the general public for release of statistical information; performs computer input for nationwide automated system (CLETS) including stolen vehicles, missing persons, stored vehicles and stolen property according to established guidelines; files various documents in the manner prescribed by policy; compiles and completes fingerprint cards for a variety of individuals including all city employees, reserve police officers and applicants for specialized permits; processes  arrestee prints for reporting purposes; screens office and telephone callers; provides front counter assistance and information to the public; responds to and resolves complaints and requests for information on regulations, procedures, systems and precedents relating to assigned responsibilities; operates a variety of office equipment including copiers, facsimile machine and computer; inputs and retrieves data and text; organizes and maintains disk storage and filing; ensures and maintains adequate supply of necessary report forms and supplies and performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

Traffic Division:  Under direct supervision, the selected individual is assigned to the Traffic Division in the Seal Beach Police Department.  Duties include: enforcement of parking regulations; assists with traffic control; provides assistance as directed; performs other related duties as assigned. 

POLICE CADET

$13.00 - $15.80/hr.

(Part-time, at-will, no benefits)

DEFINITION:  The Cadet Program is designed to introduce recent high school graduates (ages 18 to 24) to a law enforcement career and to prepare them for entry into the Police Academy.   Under direct supervision, the Cadet position performs a wide variety of police support duties and clerical assistance for the Fontana Police Department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The employee must have the ability to:

• Perform reception duties; greet visitors and direct to appropriate staff; answer questions and provide general information to the public; answer phones and forward calls as appropriate.
• Provide assistance in property control as needed; log incoming property into computer, release property, transport evidence to crime lab, appear in court to testify regarding the validity of evidence.
• Provide support assistance and learn the duties performed in the following areas:  lobby reception, records, crime prevention, dispatch, patrol, and property control.
• Provide clerical support as needed; type, file, provide requested forms and reports; release vehicles to individuals as appropriate.
• Maintain current enrollment and satisfactory completion of at least 9 semester units of law enforcement related college courses in order to participate in the Cadet program.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Learn, understand, interpret and apply Police Department policies and procedures.
• Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
• Must meet the Peace Officer medical standards recommended by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. 
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
• Employee must perform any other tasks or functions deemed necessary to the daily operations of the employer, and

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Position requires sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities.  This position also requires grasping, gripping, repetitive hand movement and fine hand coordination in using a computer keyboard.  The need to lift, carry and push supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required.  May be required to work outside in the elements; hot, cold and rain.  Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading written documents.  Acute hearing is required when providing telephone and counter service.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:  Successful candidates will have some basic knowledge of modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment and effective public communication techniques. EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:  Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade and current and continuous enrollment in an accredited college or university with college level course work in law enforcement.  The incumbent must be a minimum of 18 years old and a maximum of 24 years old. LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS: Possession of, and continuously throughout employment, a valid CA Class “C” Driver’s License.

SELECTION PROCESS:  May include, but not limited to, a written test, physical agility test, department oral interview, thorough background investigation, pre-employment physical, psychological examination, and/or polygraph test.

The Redwood City Police Department is currently accepting applications for Per-Diem COMMUNICATIONS DISPATCHERS.  Using a sophisticated Computer Aided Dispatch terminal, the Communications Dispatcher receives emergency calls from within the public requesting police, fire, medical, or other emergency service; determine priority, and dispatch police, fire, ambulance, or other emergency units as necessary and in accordance with established procedures. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Maintaining contact with all units on assignment and maintaining status and location of police field units and fire units; Monitoring emergency alarm boxes; Coordinating emergency calls and relay information and assistance requests involving other agencies; Entering, updating and retrieving information from networks relating to wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registration, stolen vehicles and other information. Hours will vary depending on scheduling needs, and will be approximately 20-40 hours per month.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, the Public Safety Specialist – Dispatch , as a member of the Police Department, transmits and receives information over the police and public works radio system; dispatches routine and emergency calls for service; types, records, and files information; handles emergency and non-emergency telephone calls utilizing complex technical aids, such as computer aided dispatch systems (CAD), and performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: The following statements are intended as general illustrations of the work in this job class and are not all inclusive for specific positions.

• Receives emergency and non-emergency telephone calls from the public for police, fire, or other emergency services; determines the nature of the call and the resources necessary to respond.
• Monitors police radio communications; maintains contact with police units to track officer status and respond to need for additional resources; monitors various radio channels to keep abreast of county-wide police activities affecting the City and assist other county agencies with mutual aid.
• Prioritizes requests for police and other public safety services; determines availability and location of patrol units; transmits information and dispatches police personnel and equipment in response to calls; routes calls for fire and emergency medical assistance to the Santa Clara County Fire Department.
• Assists police personnel in the field by quickly and accurately researching and relaying criminal history information and other requested data.
• Communicates with callers to determine the nature of the call and provide appropriate assistance; maintains composure to ensure that complete and accurate information is transmitted to public safety and medical personnel.
• Screens non-emergency calls for service; provides requested information or directs callers to the proper person, department or agency.
• Updates and maintains electronic records and logs of data pertaining to calls and activities.
• Receives and coordinates requests for emergency Public Works assistance outside of the City’s normal business hours (pertaining to full municipal services in Los Altos, and sewer maintenance requests in Los Altos Hills and the surrounding unincorporated areas).
• Act in the place of records staff for after-hours walk-in visitors to the Police Department.
• May assist with the training of new communications personnel.

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

KNOWLEDGE OF: Standard office methods, procedures, software and equipment; Geography of the local area; General public safety communications practices; Principles of customer service.

SKILL AND ABILITY TO: Multi-task and prioritize; Efficiently use radio and other communications equipment; Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; Analyze situations quickly and accurately; Maintain composure and work effectively under pressure; Understand and follow oral and written direction; Demonstrate initiative and exercise good judgment in the performance of duties; Establish, maintain, and promote positive working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.

Accurately type 50 words per minute; maintain a wide variety of records related to police services; courteously and tactfully relate to the public and law enforcement personnel; process related police matters such as receive bail money, schedule court dates, etc.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND GENERAL WORKING CONDITIONS: This position will require the ability to work rotating shifts on an on-going basis, including irregular hours on short notice. This position will also be assigned a uniform to wear during work hours.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Any combination of the listed experience and education requirements may lead to a qualifying application. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

• Possession of a High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent is required.
• Completion of college-level coursework is highly desirable
• A minimum of one year of public safety call-taking and radio dispatching is required
• Possession of Basic P.O.S.T. Dispatch Certificate is highly desirable and may be substituted for work experience

$50.00 to $67.00 hourly DOE
 

OTHER INFORMATION

Temporary employees are non-benefited, at-will positions. Since the City does not participate in Social Security and is required to provide an alternative retirement plan, you are required to participate in the City's defined contribution retirement plan through Nationwide where 3.75% of your gross compensation per pay period is deducted and put into the plan. The City matches this 3.75% for a total contribution of 7.5% of your gross compensation per pay period.

THE POSITION

Under the supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, provides instruction to swimmers, attend practices and swim meets and prepare swim meet event scheduling.

• Create lesson plans for team practices including the preparation of work-out schedules for all age and ability levels on the team

• Instruct and evaluate swim team members in important competitive swimming elements and techniques

THE POSITION

Under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, Recreation Coordinator and/or Program Specialist, the Head Lifeguard assists in planning, organizing, and supervising aquatics programs related to the management and operation of a public swimming pool.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

•     Assist in supervising and training swimming pool part-time staff, including input to schedules and staff evaluation;

•     Maintain up-to-date records and prepare related reports as required;

•     Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service;

•     Perform other duties as assigned.

THE POSITION

Tri-City is looking to fill one exciting part-time position to serve as a Community Garden Farmer for the Therapeutic Community Garden. The Community Garden Farmer position will appeal to individuals who love to work outdoors and are passionate about teaching and mentoring individuals with behavioral health needs about gardening.  The Community Garden Farmer will report to the Clinical Program Manager.

This position is responsible for a variety of ongoing responsibilities including, but not limited to:

• Maintain and care for the garden, teaching and mentoring Tri-City staff and program participants about gardening;

• Maintain produce logs/reports, conduct horticulture research to manage plants, irrigation systems and pest control;

• Form beds for planting; create planting schedule;

• Select seeds or plants for planting; cultivate and prepare soil for planting;

• Sow seeds or alternative germination techniques; weed; and prepare and conduct composting;

• Assemble and maintain irrigation systems, in addition to manually watering crops, plants and trees;

• Plan plant production to ensure ample harvest will be available for marketing and distribution;

• Assist team in developing group curriculum that integrates horticulture skills;

• Participate in community events and presentations to promote the garden and other duties as assigned.
