Hourly rate: Starting at $19.55 / hour

Part-time position: This position will be in the Grounds unit. Anticipated 3 days per week, up to 27 hours (may include weekend hours)

Summary:

Employees receive moderate supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures and may be assigned to work in different areas throughout the District, including grounds, custodial and open space.

Must be available to work varied schedules, including weekends and holidays. Positions are part-time and schedules are made based on the needs of the assigned units of Grounds, Maintenance or Park Rangers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Support daily upkeep and cleanliness of parks, public areas, and facilities
• Perform routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning restrooms, removing litter, trail repair, and maintaining reservation or event areas
• Use hand and power tools for light landscaping work including pruning, weeding, and planting
• Prepare open space, athletic fields or recreational spaces for public use
• Assist with basic irrigation and sprinkler maintenance
• Follow safety procedures and maintain a clean and organized work environment

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• Perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be at least 18 years old

Education and Experience:

Graduation from high school or equivalent; maintenance/construction or landscape experience preferred.

Certificates and Licenses:

• Valid California Driver License with satisfactory driving record
• Satisfactory completion of a pre-employment functional capacity examination
• Department of Justice fingerprint clearance

Language Ability:
Ability to read and comprehend basic instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to park visitors and to other employees.

Math Ability:
Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s. Ability to perform these operations using units of money and weight measurement, volume and distance.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to use common-sense understanding to carry out instructions provided in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions including rain, sun and extreme heat for extended periods. The employee is frequently exposed to moving equipment and mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, toxic or caustic chemicals, plants and pesticides. The noise level in the environment is loud.

• Assist in conducing classes and participate in group activities
• Facilitate organized games and sport activities
• Assist in the encouragement of participation, developmental learning, and good sportsmanship
• Assist as a chaperone at dances, parties, and on field trips
• Assist in facility set-up and break-down for group activities

• Minimum age of 16 years old with a valid work permit. Two letters of recommendation from non-family members.

Summer Day Camps

Looking for individuals who are passionate about making a difference and having fun outdoors! If entering your senior year of high school, are in college or beyond, this could be a perfect fit. Our five all-day summer camps run from June 15 to August 14, with staff training beginning June 8. Serving children ages 4-12 at multiple locations, these positions serve as role models to youth campers throughout the Conejo Valley, leading arts and crafts, recreation games, swimming, hiking and more!

Qualifications Summary

Summary:
Under general supervision, plan, conduct, and participate in recreational program activities according to established programs, schedules, and standards, in accordance with District policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Develop, conduct, and participate in various athletic, craft, social, cultural, and instructional activities
• Prepare facilities for programming, special events, or rental group usage
• Greet visitors, direct participants to the appropriate location, and respond to general inquiries
• Ensure safety of environment and equipment for staff, volunteers, participants, and visitors
• May open or close and secure facilities in compliance with District policies and procedures
• Issue and collect recreation equipment and supplies used by instructors, participants, or visitors
• Supervise special events, field trips, and other group activities

• Coordinate and participate in promotional activities and community events
• Modify and adapt activities specific to specialized programs or populations, as appropriate

Minimum Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty* satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required:

Education and Experience:
Minimum age of 18 years old with a High School Diploma (or GED). At least 500 hours of experience in recreation with 15 units completed in recreation or a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Certificates and Licenses:

• First Aid & CPR/AED within 90 days of employment with ability to maintain certifications thereafter as a condition of employment.
• Valid California driver’s license with a good driving record and current automobile insurance.
• Department of Justice fingerprint clearance.
• Proof of a negative TB skin test.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to communicate effectively in English in both written and oral form. Ability to write routine correspondence using correct spelling and grammar. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Ability to apply common sense and exercise good judgement in solving problems. Ability to establish effective relationships with fellow employees, volunteers, and participants and/or parents/guardians.

Fingerprint-Based Background Check:
All recreation employees are required to obtain fingerprint-based background clearance prior to their first day of employment.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
The employee may provide guidance or direction to other part-time employees and to volunteers.

Exposure to hazardous conditions in the environment will vary depending on unit assigned.
