About the Position: Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen) is seeking a Human Resources (HR) Intern to join our dedicated Human Resources Department.  We are looking for a self-motivated individual who enjoys working both collaboratively in teams and independently. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong attention to detail, excellent administrative and organizational skills, and a “can-do” attitude with a passion for learning and growing in the HR field. Intern responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

• Assist in district-wide recruitment processes, including full-cycle recruitment support and recruitment metrics
• Support recruitment marketing and social media outreach
• Perform research and analytical work to strengthen HR programs and projects
• Support training and development, including in-house and off-site training classes and district special events hosted by HR
• Provide employee benefits program support
• Other related tasks as assigned

Basic Requirements: Current enrollment in an associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree program, or trade school in a relevant field or a recent graduate (within the last 12 months). Must have completed a minimum of two years of college course work. The internship requires strong organizational and analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and with a team. Requires a high degree of confidentiality, ensuring sensitive information is handled with the utmost discretion. The ideal candidate will be agile in responding to changing priorities, and capable of managing multiple tasks efficiently. Experience with modern office procedures, methods and computer software and hardware (i.e. Windows & Microsoft Office Suite; Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook). Experience working a professional office environment is a plus.

Schedule: This position will work on-site and report to the HR department at Midpen offices in Los Altos, California, and will work under the guidance of HR staff.  This is a part-time non-benefited position, working approximately 20 hours per week (school schedules can be accommodated within regular business days and hours).  Regular business is conducted Monday through Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm. Interns may work up to a total of 950 hours over a 6-to-9-month period.

About the Position

The City of San Carlos is looking for one part-time (approx. 16-39-hours per week) non-benefited, in-person summer intern in the Public Works Engineering Department. The internship is open to candidates with interests in the following fields:  

• TRAFFIC AND PARKING - Civil engineering majors with an interest in traffic engineering including congestion mitigation, alternative transportation, traffic calming, traffic control devices and design, traffic safety, and other related tasks involving the study of traffic impacts on the City in multimodal transportation
• TRANSPORTATION CIP (Capital Improvement Project) - Civil engineering majors with an interest in capital improvement infrastructure project design and construction delivery process pertaining to complete streets and other related tasks to improve pedestrian and bicyclist mobility within the City of San Carlos

This intern will receive various assignments from the Public Works Department. Duties may include but are not limited to:

• Assisting engineering project managers with general clerical, administrative, and technical tasks for public works projects
• Document imaging and electronic document filing
• Checking mathematical calculations & Creating spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel
• Preparing presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint, creating schedules
• Entering data and creating reports in various software applications
• Performing field data collection or investigation as well as Internet research
• AutoCAD drafting and creating map displays using Google Earth
• Compiling and organizing data or documents
• Assist in other areas such as Department communication and public outreach

The position will serve as a temporary staff member and will receive overall work direction from the Associate Engineer in the Public Works Traffic Division with general oversight by the Senior Traffic Engineer.

The primary goal of the City’s Internship Program is to provide a current undergraduate/graduate college student or recent college graduate an opportunity to apply their academic training to and learn more about the various functions of municipal government. This paid internship provides hands-on experience in the daily operations of municipal government on all levels, thus enhancing the intern’s skills and resume for a future career in government.

Job Description

The City of San Carlos is offering one part-time, 20-hour per week, non-benefited, in-person summer internship in the City Manager’s Office. The position begins in May-June 2026 and ends in August-September 2026 (depending on school schedule of selected candidate). This position is entirely in-person and will take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.

Video Production Internship

The City of San Carlos City Manager’s Office is seeking a creative and motivated Video Production Intern who is passionate about digital storytelling and public service. This role offers hands-on experience producing engaging video content that helps inform and connect the community.

Assignments may include creating social media shorts, YouTube videos, staff and community interviews, event and promotional videos, educational content, and other video-related projects. The intern will also support citywide communications efforts, including content creation and social media, conduct research on a variety of topics, and assist with special projects. The position will serve as a temporary staff member and will receive overall work direction from the Management Analyst in the City Manager’s Office with general oversight from the Assistant City Manager.

The primary goal of the City’s Internship Program is to provide a college student, recent college graduate, graduate student, or recent graduate school graduate an opportunity to apply their academic training to, and learn more about, the various functions of municipal government. This paid internship offers hands-on experience in the City Manager’s Office, where the intern will develop professional skills, collaborate with City departments and community partners, and create content that makes a visible impact across the City’s communication channels.

About the Administrative Services (ASD) Intern Opportunity

The Administrative Services Department (ASD) includes the City’s Finance, Information Technology (IT), and Human Resources (HR) divisions. About the PB&R Summer Intern Opportunity

The Parks, Beaches, and Recreation Department is where community fun meets local government operations! • Helping with marketing and outreach efforts, including social media and promotional materials
• Fielding inquiries from community members in person, by phone, and via email

Education & Experience:

• Current undergraduate student majoring in Recreation Administration, Public Administration, Business, Communications, Education, Kinesiology, or a related field preferred

• No prior recreation experience required; training will be provided
• Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)

The Summer Internship Program was developed in collaboration with the Next Generation Committee, sponsored by the City/County Managers Associations of San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. The program supports the development of emerging professionals and promotes careers in local government.

The Summer Internship Program is tentatively scheduled to run from June 15, 2026 through August 14, 2026 (8 weeks). End date may be adjusted based on the intern's schedule and availability.

Selected applicants will be invited to interview during a tentative window of March 23 – April 3, 2026, with flexibility as needed.

The City anticipates finalizing offers by April 24, 2026 to allow adequate time for summer scheduling and coordination. Internships are part-time (up to 25 hours per week), seasonal, at-will, and non-benefited positions.

About the Economic & Housing Development Summer Intern Opportunity

The Economic & Housing Development Division advances initiatives that support fiscal sustainability, business vitality, housing production, and long-term community resilience. The Economic Development Intern will gain hands-on experience supporting business attraction and retention, marketing and tourism initiatives, special events, and strategic planning efforts aligned with the City’s adopted Economic Development Work Plan. This internship is ideal for a student interested in economic development, public policy, urban planning, communications, or community development. The intern will contribute to projects that directly support local businesses and enhance Pacifica’s commercial districts.

Responsibilities May Include (but Are Not Limited To):

About the IT Summer Intern Opportunity

The Information Technology (IT) Division supports the City’s technology infrastructure, cybersecurity practices, and digital service delivery across all departments. The IT Intern will gain hands-on experience in municipal technology operations, including systems support, hardware and software deployment, troubleshooting, and project-based technology initiatives. This internship is ideal for a student interested in pursuing a career in information systems, cybersecurity, network administration, or public sector technology. The intern will contribute to meaningful projects that enhance operational efficiency and service delivery throughout the organization.

The Human Resources Division plays a central role in supporting the City’s workforce and organizational culture. The HR Intern will gain hands on exposure to public sector human resources operations, including recruitment, employee engagement, policy research, and organizational initiatives. In addition to supporting core HR functions – this intern will serve as the lead coordinator for the Summer Internship cohort experience. This opportunity is ideal for a student who is genuinely interested in pursuing a career in Human Resources or public administration and wants both operational and leadership exposure.
