Position and Duties 

The total hourly range for this classification is $21.48- $26.15/hour. 

The Public Works Department is recruiting to fill several Event Services Representative (Recreation Leader – Part Time Unbenefited) positions to support the coordination of events occurring at City Hall. The ideal candidates will possess a high level of professionalism, excellent customer service skills, and a strong work ethic. The position requires excellent judgment, initiative, independence, integrity, organizational skills, flexibility, and written and verbal communication skills.  

Event Services Representatives assist in monitoring and providing customer/client support for special events. Event Services Representatives maybe required to provide technical assistance and set up of equipment on day of event, assist in resolving customer issues and complaints, and respond to emergency situations during events. The on-site Event Services Representative coordinates with event staff such as ushers, ticket takers, security, crowd control, outside contractors, and performs facility safety checks which may include enforcing Safety and Fire Marshall Regulations.  

Due to the nature of the job responsibilities, Event Services Representatives must be able to:  

• Work extended/irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed. 

• Stand and/or walk for extended periods of time. 

• Lift and carry items weighing between 25 and 50 pounds on an as needed basis. 

• Comprehend verbal and written instructions. 

• Prepare event reports. 

A post-offer pre-employment TB test may be conducted by City of San José Employee Health Services.

DEFINITION: Under general supervision from Preschool Instructor(s) and the Recreation Supervisor, the preschool aide assists in planning, organizing, and implementing preschool programming for children ages 2-5 years old in a range of classes from introductory drop-off preschool classes to Kindergarten preparedness preschool classes. Program hours are M-F PM 8:30am – 1:00pm. Approximately 20– 23 hours a week. Preschool aides must be willing and able to both take direction from the Preschool Instructor and work independently when fulfilling tasks. Substitute and on-call positions also available.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Assists in the development, coordination, planning, implementing and supervising the day-to-day activities, themes and special events for an ongoing preschool program.

• Create and maintain a safe, nurturing, and creative environment.

• Supervise and engage preschool students during preschool program hours.

• Demonstrate excellent customer service and communicate effectively with co-workers, parents, and children.

• Maintain registration, attendance, and activity records; ensure the proper pick-up/drop-off of children.

Under the direct supervision of a Recreation Coordinator, the Recreation Leader implements and facilitates well-rounded programs in youth after-school programs, pre-school programs, day camps, sports leagues, and special events at designated recreation facilities. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:
Equivalent to a Doctorate of Medicine from an accredited medical college or university and five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in the practice of clinical medicine. Experience must include completion of an accredited residency in an applicable field and two years of experience as a licensed Physician working in a specialty area such as disease control and adult health or maternal and child health.

Desirable qualifications include a degree in Public Health, experience in working with community groups, and Board Certification in a Medical Specialty relevant to public health such as family medicine, pediatrics, or preventive medicine.

Other requirements include the ability to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business, the incumbent must maintain a valid California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.

Facility and Sports Field Attendants work in the formal Suisun City classification of Recreation Specialist I. Starting hourly rate will depend on qualifications. This position works on average 19 hours per week.

The Department: The Recreation, Parks and Marina Department is responsible for the operations and programs of the Suisun City Marina, the Senior Center and the Joseph A. Nelson Center, including preschool, after-school programs at various sites, recreation classes and sports leagues, community events and special event rentals.

THE POSITION

Under general supervision of a Police Sergeant, the Reserve Police Officer is a sworn position assigned to field operations to patrol for the prevention and detection of crime and enforcement of laws and regulations within the philosophy of community oriented policing.  Incumbents are normally expected to solve most work problems independently and to refer to supervisory personnel only those matters which involve policy decisions, technical questions and unusual problems at the entry level and make recommendations at the advanced level.

Definition: Under supervision, to provide facility support to recreation programs, activities or services; understands and adheres to facility policies and procedures; and performs related work as required.  This temporary part-time non-benefited position works an average of 5 - 25 hours per week during the program year.  Available shifts are Saturday and/or Sunday afternoons/evenings.

Essential Duties:  Depending upon assignment, the duties of a Facility Attendant - Recreation Leader I, II or III may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Organizes, inventories and maintains necessary facilities and materials.
• Open, close, and secure recreation facilities.
• Set up and tear down tables and chairs.
• Follow set-up directions specific to each activity and event.
• Maintains group and individual discipline, and code of conduct.
• Perform light maintenance to maintain equipment, rooms, and the overall appearance of the facility and picnic rental sites
• Provide quality customer service to all instructors, participants, and renters
• Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Special Requirements:   Vision adequate to perform room set-ups and take down; speak clearly; ability to bend stoop or crouch; physical stamina to complete all set-up related activities; ability to work off-hours, shifts or events as required; strength to lift and carry materials weighing up to 20 pounds; and the ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather and temperature conditions.

Education & Experience: 

Recreation Leader I:  Current enrollment in high school, with minimum age of 15 at time of appointment.  Must possess a work-permit. No previous experience required.

Recreation Leader II:  Current enrollment in high school, with minimum age of 16 at time of appointment.  Equivalent to three (3) months of full-time experience (approximately 500 hours) of volunteer or paid work experience in recreation programs or equivalent. Depending on area of assignment, previous knowledge of and experience participating in the activity and/or sport is desirable. 

Recreation Leader III:  Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12) grade.  Equivalent to six (6) months full-time experience (approximately 1,000 hours) of volunteer or paid work experience equivalent to a Recreation Leader II with the City of Millbrae. Depending on area of assignment, previous knowledge of and experience participating in the activity and/or sport is desirable.

Certificates:  Must possess a first aid/CPR certification or be willing to obtain one. 

Service Standards:  

Must successfully complete background process.  All candidates will be fingerprinted pursuant to California State Law.  All successful candidates under age 18 must possess a work permit prior to hire.
