Job Description

Under the supervision of the Piledriver Supervisor I, the Pile Worker performs a variety of manual work in the repair and construction of piers, wharves, and related substructures by removing and replacing decayed and/or damaged caps, stringers, and decking; pulling, driving, framing, and bolting piles; burning old bolts; and repairing docks. Inspects piling underwater, wraps damaged piles and identifies severely damaged piles for replacement. Performs underwater burning, welding, and rigging for underwater projects.

For positions that require diving ability, incumbent must hold a current commercial diving certification. Diving ability includes performing underwater diving work including the ability to inspect underwater piles, wrap damaged piles, cut piles, prep and grout concrete piles, install anodes, designate severely damaged piles for replacement, perform underwater burning, welding, and rigging and familiarity with CAL OSHA regulations related to diving.

The essential duties of the 9330 Pile Worker include but are not limited to:

• Placing, driving, and capping piles.
• Placing stringers, sawing, and laying decking.

• Assisting the dive crew by sending down equipment and tools.
• Using international code of hand signals to signal instructions to the Piledriver Engine Operator.

• Using and maintaining a wide variety of pneumatic and portable gas tools such as drills, sanders, wrenches, saws, forklifts, torches, boring machines, and other related tools.

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: Some positions require diving ability - for positions that perform underwater diving, candidates are required to pass a medical qualification examination to dive and for the use of a respirator. Sustained physical effort, frequently underwater and under adverse weather conditions such as in rain, rough water, cold temperatures (water and air) and confined spaces; moving large heavy timbers; operating a skiff; and driving Port vehicles; required to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and support dive gear and apparatus from 100 to 150 pounds.  

Qualifications

Experience

Four (4) years of verifiable journey-level experience as a pile worker.

For diving positions only: One (1) year of commercial construction diver experience in addition to the experience described above for a total of five (5) years of experience.

License and Certification

Possession of a valid California driver’s license (to be presented at time of appointment). Insurability under the Port’s automobile liability insurance must be maintained throughout employment.

For diving positions only: Possession of a current certification as a commercial diver by an Association of Commercial Diving Educators (ACDE) accredited dive school.

Desirable Qualifications (Ideal Candidate)

Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Card

Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training and other job related qualifications. Based upon a review of employment applications, a limited number of the qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process. 

The process will consist of an Oral Panel Interview. An eligibility list will be established from those who pass the examination process with a score of 70% or higher. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The list will remain in effect for at least one year unless exhausted sooner. 

The department will invite the most qualified candidates from the eligibility list to a final department interview. Applicants selected for a Departmental interview must complete a background investigation which includes a polygraph and fingerprinting. After a conditional job offer, applicants must also complete a psychological examination and pre-employment medical examination.

Tri-City is now actively recruiting for a Bilingual Administrative Assistant that will directly support our Wellness Center. 

An example of the various duties include but are not limited to:

• Performs a variety of office support duties related to the assigned work unit; gathers information from a variety of sources, including data systems & clients for the completion & processing of forms, records, & other documents. 

• Receives & screens visitors, provides general information to clients, visitors, vendors, & staff, in-person and on the telephone; assists clients by referring them to sources of information, hands out standard forms & explains how to complete them.

• Receives and responds to enquiries; provides information and answers questions; addresses requestor’s issues or concerns and/or directs them to appropriate information sources; makes appointments and maintains calendars.

• Maintains records, logs, files, & other forms of information, including various demographic reports, and room schedules specific to the assigned division or department. 

• Organizes and maintains departmental policy manuals; recommends updates to policy manuals.

• Coordinates training requests from outside agencies, including community provider and business partners; maintains training schedules and collaborates session evaluations.

The City of Brisbane will be sponsoring up to four summer internships this year.  Our internships are project-oriented and designed to give college students a good general overview of future employment opportunities and current issues in the Public Sector.  You will have the opportunity for exposure to various areas of City Administration during your internship and to network with fellow interns and participate in professional development activities in San Mateo County and/or Santa Clara County.

Projects for 2024 include:

• Communications – Assist with developing innovative and relevant content for posting on City-administered social media sites, research and work with departments in developing articles for publication on the City’s website and print newsletter, and assist with aspects of video production including storyboarding, camera work, and script-writing.

• IT – Have some familiarity with programs such as Windows, Active Directory, Office/Microsoft 365. Must be able to disassemble and reassemble a PC. Projects will consist of adding and editing AD and email accounts and sorting and organizing hardware components. Some daily tasks will include responding to help desk requests and making basic equipment repairs and replacements.

• Human Resources - Offering learning opportunities by following a full recruitment and onboarding process. Assist with website updating; maintaining employee records; the conversion of physical records/forms to electronic format; and conducting research and analysis on HR-related topics.

• Public Works (Utilities) – Provide support to the City's Public Works Department - Utilities Division with various engineering projects in drinking water distribution, water resources, sanitary sewer collection, and storm drainage. Primary assignment will focus on mapping and geolocating drinking water facilities to comply with new state regulatory compliance.  Secondary assignments may include field engineering support on construction of capital utility projects and assisting on various engineering reports and studies.

Applicants must be college students currently enrolled in and pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited college or university in a related field (e.g. public administration, public policy, business, planning, library science, environmental studies, engineering, sustainability). Undergraduate candidates must have a minimum of 48 semester units or equivalent completed.  Applicants should also be self-motivated, have excellent interpersonal skills, able to use Microsoft Office software, demonstrate good research ability and have the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. 

SALARY AND HOURS: The salary range for Interns is $20.00 per hour, 15-18 hours per week over a 12-week period.  The start date is flexible depending on the student’s availability.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:  Graduation from high school or GED equivalent is desirable.  This provision may be waived for applicants 15 to 18 years of age with ability to obtain a valid work permit.

Experience:  Previous experience as a lifeguard, having worked with youth and WSI certification is desirable.

Special Requirements:  Current Lifeguarding, Standard First Aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certificates are required. Current certifications for this program are not required prior to applying for position.

SALARY AND HOURS:

$17.06 – $17.91– $18.80 – $19.75 - $20.72 per hour.  This is a part-time position, paid sick leave benefit available. Initial appointments are generally made at the first step of this five step scale.  Hours will range from 15-25 hours per week.  Candidates that make the eligibility list may be selected for shifts as needed throughout the year.  Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays throughout the entire year.
