What You’ll Do:

Depending upon class level and assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Review and examine construction documents, plans and specifications for one and two family, and multi-family residential, and basic commercial and industrial projects.
• Conduct plan checks on commercial and residential building structures; review structural calculations, fire resistance requirements, earthquake resistance and soils engineering. Conducts plan checks for commercial buildings to be remodeled and/or altered.
• Assist in staffing the public counter; issue building permits as required.  Maintain accurate records and write reports regarding the work as required
• Confer over the phone or in person with homeowners, builders, engineers, contractors, architects and the public to give information and interpret building codes and regulations and permit requirements; recommends necessary changes to obtain compliance with applicable building and zoning codes and regulations.
• Review corrected plans for conformity with requirements; ensures that proper building permit requirements are met.
• Coordinate plan check activities with other City departments and with outside agencies.
• Prepare reports and written correspondence to architects, engineers, contractors and others related to the correction of plans and engineering detail.
• Maintain records of incoming plans and those completed.
• Confer with building inspectors on building‑related problems arising in the field during construction.
• Conduct field inspections as required. Make on‑site construction inspections on occasion, when required to confirm that construction complies with approved plans and specifications.
• Initiate appropriate action to enforce code compliance.
• Coordinate construction plans examination processes with those of other City departments and units.
• Monitor changes and legislation pertaining to assigned work; investigate new materials and substitute materials, and new methods of structural design; recommend appropriate changes in the building codes and regulations to the Deputy Building Official.

 

 

Revised Announcement:

The District is looking for a dedicated person to join the Fire Prevention Team.  The Community Risk Officer will perform non-complex level fire inspections, respond to citizen complaints/concerns, and run the weed abatement program.  These programs involve a lot of communication with the public, documentation, and follow through.  We are looking for someone that can bring varying departments and agencies together to find solutions to possible fire hazards within our community.  The Community Risk Officer may be be assigned to work with the Public Education Officer to assist creating, updating, and distributing District publications. Work is assigned in terms of general objectives and results obtained.  The incumbent is subject to being called back when off duty and may work on weekends or be assigned irregular work hours during the day or evening.  Performs related work as required.

Experience and Training

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Experience: Two years of progressively responsible administrative experience in a related public safety field, such as office of emergency services, fire, police, emergency medical, or emergency communications.

Training:  Equivalent to graduation from high school.  Possession of an Associate’s degree in a related field is preferred. For the class III - California State Fire Marshal Community Risk Educator and Community Risk Specialist courses.

 

Licenses and Certificates

 

All licenses and certifications must be maintained as a condition of employment.

• Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California Driver’s License, which must be maintained as a condition of employment.
• Must be able to pass a Department of Justice background check.

• CPR/First Aid Certification is desirable.

 

NOTE: Positions may be filled at the I, II, or III level. If hired at the Community Risk Officer I,  promotion to a higher level shall be based on requisite years of service in the prior classification, satisfaction of educational requirements, quality of performance, likelihood of success in the higher classification, and the needs of the District.

The Position

The City of San Bruno Community Development Department is recruiting for a Building Inspector I/II, who will have a unique opportunity to help shape and guide the community’s future.  As the City continues to grow in population and develop within the burgeoning San Francisco Bay Area, now is an exciting time to join the San Bruno Community Development Department. Under the guidance of the Chief Building Official, the Building Inspector performs routine to complex inspections for compliance with building codes, issues corrections notices and citations, authors reports of building inspection activity, assists in administering the permitting function for commercial and residential buildings, and performs customer service for the residents of the community. The Building Inspector may also develop educational materials for the public, perform duties of a plan examiner, and represent the City at professional meetings, training sessions and other industry events.  Municipal or jurisdictional building inspection experience is highly desirable for this position.

The Department

The Community Development Department includes Planning, Building, and Code Enforcement. The Department is responsible for ensuring that new development and modifications to existing development in San Bruno are completed in compliance with City and State laws and for supporting the maintenance of safe, attractive neighborhoods and business areas through a progressive code enforcement program.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.   Possession of an AA/AS degree from an accredited college in Building Inspection or Construction Technology highly desirable, plus:

Building Inspector I:

¨ Two (2) years of experience in general construction or related fields or two (2) years of experience in municipal or jurisdictional building inspection experience, or a combination of both.

Building Inspector II:

¨ Five (5) years of experience in the capacity of Building Inspector I.

Special Requirements

Possession of and ability to maintain a valid California driver’s license.

Building Inspector I

¨ Possession of a minimum of one (1) Legacy International Conference Building Officials (ICBO) or International Code Council (ICC) Certification in Residential Building, Plumbing, Electrical or Mechanical; a combination of certificates preferred.

Building Inspector II

¨ Possession of a minimum of five (5) Legacy International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) or International Code Council (ICC) Certifications in Building, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Combination and/or other approved certifications as determined by the Chief Building Official.

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

Applicants should possess knowledge of principles, practices and methods used in various building construction areas, including residential building, mechanical, electrical and/or plumbing; operational characteristics and use of standard equipment used in building inspection and the building trades; building and construction standards and materials; testing procedures; basic principles of mathematics; applicable federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations, including construction code manuals and specifications; standard office procedures, practices and equipment including a computer and applicable software; methods and techniques for record keeping and report preparation and writing; proper English, spelling and grammar; and occupational hazards and standard safety procedures.  Applicants should also posses the ability to work effectively with contractors, developers, architects, engineers, owners, and the general public; read and understand complicated plans and blueprints; communicate effectively orally and in writing; make sound decisions within established guidelines; implement, explain and apply applicable laws, codes and regulations; analyze complex issues, and develop and implement appropriate responses; facilitate appropriate corrective action from property owners regarding violations.
