The Department

The City of Pacifica's Public Works Department is recruiting for a Administrative Assistant. This is a full-time position with benefits and a compensation schedule range of $5246- $6519 per month. This position is included in a bargaining unit under Teamsters MISC Local No. 856.

DEFINITION

Under immediate and general supervision, classes in this three-level series provide a wide variety of responsible and complex administrative, secretarial and clerical duties for an assigned department and department head, to coordinate and participate in office functions in support of the department's goals and objectives; to provide information and assistance to employees and the public regarding departmental policies and procedures.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The emphasis of the Administrative Assistant series is on the accomplishment of general clerical and administrative support duties.

Administrative Assistant I

This is the entry level in the series. Employees perform routine duties under immediate supervision.

Administrative Assistant II

The is the journey level in the series. Employees perform both routine and more complex duties under general supervision.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Immediate supervision is provided to the Administrative Assistant I. General supervision provided to the Administrative II and III is provided by the department head of designee. The Administrative Assistant III may lead or supervise assigned staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE

FOLLOWING:

• Maintains a system of files and records.
• Composes correspondence and prepares reports independently or from oral instructions.
• Makes appointments and meets callers.
• Operates various office machines and equipment as required.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

In addition, the Administrative Assistant II performs the following duties:

• Plans, schedules and performs a wide variety of clerical and typing work related to the function to which assigned;
• Supplies information involving facts and interpretations.
• Compiles information for reports and transactions and assists in the consolidation and presentation of data.
• Prepares documents based on data obtained from records and other sources and processes them in accordance with prescribed procedures.
• Establishes and maintains systems to insure accountability and controls

This is the skilled level class in the building maintenance series.

Receive general supervision from higher-level staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

• Operates woodworking machinery such as sanders, planers, and power saws in the construction of cabinets, shelves, stairways, and other wooden articles or structures;
• Hangs doors and installs wooden sashes;
• Lays finished flooring;
• Instels, remodels, repairs and maintains electric, HVAC, wiring and plumbing systems, furniture, roofs, and other general repairds to buildings;
• Installs wall board;
• Prepares walls for plastering and refinishing;
• Maintains and services carpentry equipment and tools;
• Repairs small motors, heaters, boilers, and broken water lines; may do occasional general public works construction and maintenance work.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required and other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of

• Materials and methods used in both rough and finished carpentry and most other areas of the construction field;
• Plumbing maintenance, installation, and finishing

Skill/Ability to

• Prepare rough sketches of work and estimates of materials and labor;
• Read blueprints and work according to plans and specifications;
• Carry out oral and written directions;
• Use and operate mechanical tools; ;

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way of qualifying is:

Experience: Two years of progressively responsible experience performing public works building maintenance duties

Substitution: Completion of an accredited apprenticeship in the construction field or may substitute for two years.

Ability to drive and possess a valid California driver’s license.  May be required to qualify for and obtain a Class A or Class B driver’s license and be subject to random drug and alcohol testing under the Department of Transportation regulations.

• Flexibility: Ability to work a flexible schedule as the Food Service Unit operates 7 days a week from 6:30 am to 7 pm year-round. This position may require you to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and/or other shift work.

Additionally, the ideal candidate for the Sheriff’s Office will possess a California Class C or Class A license, have a clean driving record, and be comfortable working alongside incarcerated individuals. Fluency in Spanish, Tagalog, Mandarin, Cantonese, Russian (speak, read, write) is highly desired but not required.
  
Candidates chosen for these positions must successfully pass a background investigation in order to work in a locked facility around incarcerated persons. Felony and misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency.  
   
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office currently has one regular full-time vacancies with additional vacancies expected. The appointment may be made at either the Food Service Worker I or II level, depending on the qualifications of the successful candidate(s) and the needs of the department.
  
As a Food Service Worker with the Sheriff’s Office you will be responsible for:

• Directing the work of incarcerated individuals who are assigned to clean and prepare food or assist in related routine tasks defined by supervisors at specific facilities assisting Cooks in the preparation of meals.
• Driving a large or small truck to deliver food and supplies and maintaining basic records related to vehicle use such as mileage and service reports.
• Preparing food for cooking by peeling, cutting, or slicing.
• Preparing salads, sandwiches, beverages, and simple desserts.
• Setting up tray lines and/or individual trays.
• Maintaining safety and security of equipment and addressing issues that arise.
• Overseeing the activities of the dish room, including ensuring chemicals are ordered, monitoring the PH and temperatures of the equipment, and preparing daily items such as dishes, pots, pans, containers, carts, and equipment.
• Cleaning facilities including sweeping, mopping, and sanitizing work areas such as floors, storage spaces, trucks and emptying garbage cans.
• Assisting with deliverables including signing for, bringing in, and/or storing items.
• Performing basic office tasks such as answering phones, working with computers, and paperwork.
• Following Food Service Unit policy and procedures including arriving to work on time, submitting personal timecard and assisting in following up on requests in a timely matter.
• Performing related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Food Service Worker I ($30.86 - $34.47 / hourly) is the entry/trainee level position. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn a full range of Food Service Worker duties. As experience is gained there is greater independence of action within established guidelines. This classification is flexibly staffed with Food Service Worker II and incumbents may advance to the next level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiencies which meet the higher-level qualifications.
  
Food Service Worker II ($32.50 - $36.35 / hourly) is the journey level position. Under general supervision, incumbents independently perform a variety of responsible food service duties. Incumbents work under specified guidelines and supervisors are available in non-routine circumstances. Specific duties may vary from position to position.
 
Knowledge of:

• Basic kitchen cleaning and sanitation methods.
• Operation and care of kitchen equipment.
• Proper lifting techniques.

Skill/Ability to:

• Prepare simple foods and beverages.
• Interact cooperatively with others including staff, patients, inmates and members of the public.
• Work rapidly under pressure.
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Maintain a high standard of personal cleanliness.
• Maintain basic records.
• Direct the work of juvenile detainees or adult inmates assigned to assist in basic food service activities at specific facilities.
• Operate a truck or van.
• Lift, carry or push materials, supplies or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

Licensure/Certification: Must possess and maintain a current California Food Handler Card for the duration of employment in this classification or obtain card within six (6) months of employment.

THE POSITION: The San Mateo Public Library is seeking an energetic individual to provide a wide variety of library support work. Work Schedule: This is a 20-24-hour per week position. The regular work schedule is Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; weekend work may be occasionally required. This position is limited to up to 1000 hours per year. However, employment might end sooner, depending on the needs of the hiring department. Extra-help positions are paid hourly and are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the extra-help assignment.

Performs a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance and replacement of Town water, sewer, street and storm drainage facilities and systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Typical duties include but are not limited to:
•    Perform required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, laying and backfilling.
•    Perform routine cleaning, inspection and preventive maintenance of equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor.
•    Performs all duties in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards.
•    Maintains Corporation Yard and other Town facilities.
•    Responds to residents' requests for service.
•    Maintains a variety of records relating to maintenance activity.
•    Assists in determining the locations of water, storm drain and sewer lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation.
•    Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of equipment and supplies.
•    Work in adverse weather conditions.

Possible 40 or more hours per week (Subject to change) up to total 960 hours of temporary employment.

Department of Public Works: Engineering Division Opportunity [Civil Engineer]

Under direction of a Senior Civil Engineer, the Civil Engineer helps define, design, and/or review minor projects and phases of large civil engineering projects with complex budgets and timelines. In the Engineering Division, projects may include such things as bridge repair and replacement, culvert repair and replacement, new retaining walls, pavement management, road improvements, new stormwater management devices, new traffic management devices, and others.

Community Development Agency: Building & Safety Division Opportunity [Structural Civil Engineer]

Do you have experience with structural design and review? Are you passionate about building safety, public service, and helping construction projects move forward with clarity and confidence? As a Structural Civil Engineer, you will play a vital role in reviewing structural plans, calculations, and construction documents to ensure compliance with local and state codes, while contributing to safe, sustainable, and successful development throughout Marin County.

Signing bonus

In addition to a competitive compensations package, new, full-time, regular hire Civil Engineers are eligible to receive a $10,000.00 signing bonus which will be split into two equal payments: 50% at time of hire (i.e. first paycheck) and the remaining 50% after successful completion of their probationary period.

Hybrid schedule

The Department of Public Works and the Community Development Agency have embraced a hybrid work schedule that considers that some duties of this position may be performed remotely. However, the successful candidate must be able to report to County facilities for meetings, work assignments, and/or disaster service work upon short notice, as needed and deemed appropriate. During the initial probationary period, the successful candidate may be required to work primarily onsite before establishing a hybrid work schedule.
