About The Position:

MAINTENANCE WORKER (Full time)

Working in the Public Works Department, the Maintenance Worker I/II will perform a variety of unskilled, semiskilled and skilled light and heavy duty construction, maintenance and repair work involving public works, sewer and drainage systems, buildings, parking meters, and other facilities.

The position will be filled as a Maintenance Worker I/II based on the experience and qualifications of the candidate.

SALARY RANGE:
Maintenance Worker I/II – $3,350.50 to $4,485.52 per month (wages effective 7/1/2024 per MOU).

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Maintenance Worker I:  This is the entry level class in the maintenance worker series. Positions in this class normally perform a variety of unskilled and semi‑skilled maintenance tasks. Although trucks and other motorized equipment may be operated by a Maintenance Worker I, the equipment is used on a training basis or for tasks which are repetitious in nature. Under this training concept, positions assigned to the class of Maintenance Worker II which become vacant may reasonably be filled at the Maintenance Worker I level, with the understanding that reassignment to the Maintenance Worker II class may be expected following successful job performance and personal development.

Maintenance Worker II: This is the journey level in the maintenance worker series. Positions assigned to this class are expected to perform semi‑skilled and skilled public works maintenance activities and to operate light and moderately heavy power‑driven equipment on a continuing basis. All positions allocated to this class require that an incumbent be able to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative to fulfill assigned tasks. Maintenance Workers II may also be expected to assist in the supervision and training of less experienced personnel.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Perform a variety of maintenance work in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, parks, sewers, storm drains, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, parking meters and other public facilities.
• Operate power‑driven equipment such as skip loaders, dump trucks, water trucks and fork lifts.
• Break out old concrete work such as curbs, sidewalks, and gutters.
• Cut and prepare streets for patches, spread premix and oil, and rake asphalt.
• Replace, repair, couple, test, and backfill sewer lines.
• Clean and maintain basic tools used on the job.
• Paint traffic directional markings, such as crosswalks and safety loading zones.
• Fabricate, install, repair and replace street signs.
• Operate heavy power‑driven equipment on a relief or training basis.
• Water, mow, weed, trim, renovate, and fertilize grass and other landscaped areas.
• Rake leaves, clean walks, fields, courts, and other facilities.
• Spade and otherwise prepare ground around plants and shrubs, including mixing and applying fertilizers.
• Plant, trim and/or remove trees, flowers, and shrubs. 
• Load trimmings on trucks for disposal.
• Pick up rubbish and litter materials and perform general grounds cleaning.
• Operate power mowers, edgers, sewer rodders, and other hand-operated and power tools in the performance of maintenance and repair activities.
• Drive vehicles as required and assist in routine care and upkeep of such vehicles.
• Assist in moving and installing park and recreational equipment.
• Install, maintain, and repair sewer system mains, sprinkler systems, pipes and facilities.
• Inspect, maintain, and repair parking meter devices.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS (position requirements at entry and throughout employment)

Maintenance Worker I: Possession of a valid California Class C driver license.  There is an employee weight limitation of 325 pounds to meet the legal limits for the safe use of certain equipment.

Maintenance Worker II: One year full-time performing the duties and activities expected of incumbents in the Maintenance Worker I classification. The County of Yuba is actively recruiting to fill current vacancies and establish an employment list for the position of Public Safety Dispatcher within the Sheriff’s Department.  The incumbent receives 9-1-1 system sheriff, fire, medical emergency and rescue calls; dispatches sheriff, fire and medical personnel following established procedures; maintains communication with officers in the field to ensure safety and provide back-up and information; provides relief coverage for the records unit; and performs related work as assigned. The Yuba County Sheriff’s Department is currently accepting applications to establish an eligibility list for the classification of Correctional Officer.  Under continuing supervision incumbents perform a wide variety of support in two areas: corrections, in which incumbents ensure the security, safety and care of individuals in custody; and bailiff, in which incumbents ensure the safety and security of the courts and their personnel during court proceedings; and perform related work as assigned. The Yuba County Sheriff's Department is responsible for the administration of the Yuba County Jail and Jail staff. The Mission of the Yuba County Jail is to provide safe, efficient, humane and secure custody of all persons incarcerated. The county prisoner population is made up of those who are sentenced to county jail, those serving state prison sentences in the county jail under AB109, and those who are pre-trial and who have not yet been sentenced. The jail provides a necessary link in the criminal justice system. Maintenance Worker III: This is the senior level class in the maintenance series. Under limited supervision the applicant will organize, assign, review, and participate in the work of assigned personnel engaged in maintenance equipment operation work pertaining to building, maintenance and repair. Salary $48,664.92 - $62,892.37 per year ($23.399 - $30.234 per hour) DOQ 

Maintenance Worker Lead: This is the lead level class in the maintenance series. Under direction of supervisory and management staff performs a variety of duties related to scheduling, planning, assigning, and prioritizing construction and maintenance related projects. Exercises technical and functional supervision over staff engaged in maintenance and repair activities. Salary $53,531.42 - $69,181.61 per year ($25.740 - $33.261 per hour) DOQ

The WSTB includes a 99-yard obstacle course, 32-foot body drag (165 lbs.), six-foot chain-link fence climb with 25 yard sprint, and 500-yard run. STEP #4: ORAL BOARD INTERVIEW

• This is a panel interview. Candidates will be asked five to eight questions. Pass Point is 70% or higher. Results are valid for three years.
• If you are out of state or military, we can conduct your interview via ZOOM but you will still need to come out here to take the physical agility test.

STEP #5: BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION PROCESS

• Eligible candidates will complete a Personal History Statement (PHS) packet. Background investigators will then be assigned to assist candidates through the process. Upon successful completion and review of the background investigation, the hiring board will make their employment selections. Those selected will receive a conditional offer of employment, contingent upon successfully passing a medical and psychological exam.

STEP #6: THE SAN JOSE POLICE ACADEMY

• Police Recruits are considered a City of San Jose employee while attending the Academy, which is a 26-week program. Recruits are paid the current contract hourly rate while in the Academy. Upon graduation, you will enter the Field Training Program (FTO) for additional training as a SJPD officer on the street.
