ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
The City of Mill Valley is excited to offer four (4) Seasonal Operations Aide positions, providing one role with multiple pathways to explore public service careers. These positions provide hands on experience supporting essential infrastructure and community services across both the Public Works Department and the Sewerage Agency of Southern Marin, also known as SASM.
Seasonal Operations Aides may be assigned to one of the following teams:
- Public Works – Parks Maintenance Division (2 positions)
- Public Works – Streets & Sewers Division (1 position)
- Sewerage Agency of Southern Marin (SASM) – Maintenance Division (1 position)
This is more than a seasonal job. It is an opportunity to gain real world experience, build practical skills, and explore long term career pathways in public works and utilities. Many of our full time team members began their careers in part time or seasonal roles like this one.

DIVISION ASSIGNMENTS AND TYPICAL DUTIES
Parks Maintenance Division with Public Works: Responsibilities may include trash collection, graffiti removal, weed abatement, irrigation repairs, and supervised operation of equipment such as blowers, weed/hedge trimmers, and mowers. Work supports the maintenance of City parks, landscaped areas, trees, and vegetation.
Streets and Sewers Division with Public Works: Responsibilities may include trash collection, graffiti removal, clearing and repairing drainage facilities, street sign repair and replacement, road and curb painting, pothole and asphalt repairs, and related maintenance tasks.
Maintenance Division with SASM: Responsibilities may include assisting with maintenance of wastewater treatment equipment and facilities, supporting mechanical repairs, cleaning and preparing work areas, and helping ensure systems operate safely and efficiently. This assignment provides exposure to specialized tools, equipment, and processes used in wastewater treatment operations.
ABOUT THE POSITION
Under close supervision, the Seasonal Operations Aide provides entry-level support to an assigned department or division. This temporary role (up to 180 days) offers hands-on experience in operations, assisting staff with tasks such as maintenance, repair, cleaning, construction, and light equipment use. Duties may vary by program area and can include manual labor and tool handling.
Examples of Essential Job Functions (may include but are not limited to):
- Under direction, assist in the maintenance and upkeep of City facilities including but not limited to: parks, fields, SLP’s, streets, buildings, sewers, pools, playgrounds, and others.
- Under direction, assist in the construction or installation of City infrastructure such as curbs, sidewalks, paths, railings, stairs, signs, etc.
- Under direction, prepare and maintain work sites with safety in mind, including proper cordoning, clearance, traffic safety, and the like.
- Prepare and maintain equipment for use; clean and store equipment; shuttle and deliver equipment as directed.
- Perform research and data collection.
- Perform related duties as required.
