The San José Fire Department's (SJFD) core mission is to serve the community by protecting life, property, and the environment through prevention and response. SJFD is a high-volume, all-hazards fire department providing fire suppression and rescue services that protects approximately 200 square miles, Advanced Life Support and Basic Life Support services as well as specialized operations including Urban Search and Rescue, Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting, and a Hazardous Material Unit with a Decontamination Unit. This is the trainee level class in the Firefighter series, responsible for becoming proficient in the understanding of lifesaving and firefighting methods within the SJFD. Through a specific program comprised of general and specialized education, focused training including extensive hands-on experience, Firefighter Recruits will learn diverse tasks, policies, procedures and standards within the SJFD. Incumbents will learn techniques in emergency medical services, rescue work, firefighting and other emergency services. Duties may involve considerable physical exertion and potential risk to health and safety. Work is rigidly structured, highly supervised, and incumbents are continuously evaluated and receive feedback regularly. Firefighter Recruits must graduate from the Academy and be appointed to the class of Firefighter in order to retain employment in the job series.

Overview:
The Grants and Claims Management Unit with Valley Water is the centralized unit for seeking and managing grants brought in to help fund Valley Water projects. Core components of this work that this position will support include pre-award (seeking grant opportunities, helping to write applications, working with project teams), compliance (ensuring Valley Water can meet state and federal grant terms and conditions, including The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) standards, working with Procurement), and communications with project teams, management, and the Board of Directors. Additional work in the unit includes tracking and reporting awarded grants for reimbursement, which this position may support during high workloads (e.g., end of quarter, annual reporting).

The work will include preparing technical documents such as grant applications, reimbursement packages, work plans, and budgets for grants. The management analyst helps conduct research from internal and external sources on topics related to grant administration. • Evaluate, review, and validate the accuracy of market positions and risk metrics such as mark-to-market, value at risk, gross margin at risk.

The Firefighter-Paramedic protects life, property, and the environment by performing firefighting activities, emergency medical aid, hazardous materials response, and fire prevention duties. The position is also responsible for maintaining fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities.

The Department seeks individuals whose values align with our departmental commitment to respect, integrity, compassion, equality, and fairness. Our six San Rafael neighborhood fire stations deliver exceptionally courteous, compassionate, and professional public service.  Our firefighters are committed to helping their community and their fellow firefighters. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Candidates must have a high school diploma AND a minimum of 21 semester units of college coursework.

The Fire Engineer participates in fire suppression, training, prevention, rescue, inspection, and public education activities in protecting life, property, and the environment. The incumbent drives and operates all fire apparatus and equipment; responds to all emergency calls for service; and provides emergency medical care to the sick and injured. In addition, perform training, other safety and prevention duties as assigned.
