Under direction of the Director of Public Works, or designee, the Associate Engineer or Project Manager performs engineering and project management services in the public setting, collaborating with multiple stakeholders. These roles involve a wide range of management functions, including planning, development, scheduling, budgeting, and implementation of assigned projects. The position(s) are responsible for managing multiple Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) and complex specialized projects or programs. Both classifications provide administrative, professional, and technical assistance to the Department Director, staff, and members of the public as required. We are currently seeking to hire 1-2 new FTEs.

- Leads, coordinates, schedules, budgets, and reviews activities of the Capital Improvement Project team, support staff, consultants, and contractors; includes overseeing road closures, utility encroachments, and traffic control plans.
- Plans, organizes, administers, and coordinates the implementation of Capital Improvement Projects or other City projects; involves reviewing and approving grading and encroachment permit applications, and coordinating project-related activities.
- Prepares and may present a variety of periodic progress and special reports related to projects and activities; includes preparing comprehensive technical and staff reports in verbal and written form to commissions, Task Forces, City Council, and other agencies.
- Confers and negotiates with stakeholders, business owners, and property owners regarding project impacts, potential right-of-way acquisition, and improvements; includes consulting with public and private agencies, and securing various easements on the City’s behalf.
- Reviews cost estimates, interprets plans and specifications for contractors, and determines contractual compliance; involves reviewing and approving utility encroachments and traffic control plans for compliance with City standards.
- Responds to questions or complaints related to project activities or policy; includes responding to inquiries from the public and resolving citizen complaints.
- Conducts contract bid openings, including review and approval of bid documentation, preparation, and analysis of bid summaries.
- Exercises sound, independent judgment in the day-to-day administration of specialized or complex projects and activities; includes overseeing project implementation and ensuring compliance with City standards.
- Closely coordinates with project or program stakeholders, consultants, contractors, City Council, and project team; includes coordinating with engineers, contractors, and private owners relative to construction and maintenance of private structures and sewer facilities.
- Responsible and accountable for designing and delivering projects on time, within budget, and with excellent customer service; includes providing and maintaining data in the City’s asset management and geographic information systems.
