The Department is recruiting to fill several Groundsworker positions. The vacancies are full-time, including some positions that are full-time limit dated through June 30, 2020. Under general supervision, this position performs semi-skilled and skilled grounds maintenance functions of routine difficulty. The typical duties and responsibilities for Groundsworker are to maintain park grounds. This may include, but is not limited to: irrigation, cultivation, pruning, planting, and transplanting a variety of turf, shrubs, trees, and plants. The position may also operate mowing equipment in parks and athletic fields and operate triplex gang/rotary mowers, power edgers, tractors, rototillers, sprayers, dump and other trucks, power chain saws and other light power equipment and hand tools used in grounds and maintenance work. The position may also apply fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, and fertilizers. The position may also maintain and make minor repairs to playgrounds, picnic areas, athletic fields and sport courts, park trails, and firebreaks as well as make minor repairs and adjustments to irrigation systems, mowers, and miscellaneous equipment. The position may also perform clean-up and litter pick-up functions, clean pools and fountains, schedule automatic irrigation controllers, maintain work-related records, and prepare corresponding reports. The position may also explain programs and policies to the public, provide lead guidance to less experienced workers, assist in firefighting and rescue duties in wilderness park areas, and may be responsible for vehicle and pedestrian traffic safety in work areas.

Candidates must be willing and able to work weekends, holidays, and/or other shifts as needed.

THE POSITION:

The City of San Rafael is hiring for the temporary position of Parks Maintenance Worker in the Public Works Department.  This is a full time temporary position working 37.5 hours per week under general supervision.  Duties include, but are not limited to: cleaning restrooms, picking up and disposing of debris; mowing and edging turf; pruning shrubs and groundcovers, cleaning asphalt surfaces; general landscaping maintenance; and minor building maintenance and repair.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to operate mowers, edgers, backpack blower, small athletic tractor and weed eaters; work flexible time; follow written and oral assignments with a minimum of supervision and work with moderate public contact.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:                       

Graduation from high school or equivalent.  Must have excellent reading and communication skills; prior experience in the operation of power driven equipment or previous maintenance experience is desirable but not required.  Must be capable of heavy manual labor, including the ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. and be able to show proof of eligibility to work.  Must possess a valid California driver’s license.

This temporary, non-benefited, at-will classification performs a variety of semi-skilled work in the maintenance of parks, grounds, trees, recreational facilities, public grounds, storm sewers, sidewalks, medians, street signs and markings, and repair and upkeep of streets. Operates maintenance and construction equipment; and does related work as required.

Duties: Performs or learns to perform a variety of parks and streets maintenance tasks including watering, mowing, edging, weeding, spraying, trimming, pruning, planting and removing flowers, plants, trees and turf; maintenance and reconstruction of curbs, gutters, sidewalks, storm drains, pavement and pavement markings; assists with the installation of park, street and recreation related facilities; operates or is trained to operate park and street maintenance equipment and motor vehicles such as dump trucks, water trucks, backhoes/loaders, forklifts, sprayers, chippers, power mowers, edgers, hand tools, rollers, asphalt breakers, airless and air operated paint machines, air compressors, generators, hand tools and related equipment; performs routine maintenance work in the care of tools and supplies; assists with the installation and maintenance of traffic control and informational devices; may be required to work weekends or holidays or in the event of emergencies; and performs other related work as required.

Knowledge of: Methods, techniques, parts, tools and materials used in construction and maintenance of parks, grounds, trees, streets, storm drains, and medians.

Ability to: Perform all essential functions of the job assignment; may perform heavy labor; operate and maintain a variety of hand, power tools and equipment; to deal tactfully and courteously with others; work in a team-based environment and achieve common goals; understand and carry out written and oral instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships and public relations.  Intermittently, sit while driving, operating equipment, or completing forms/work papers; walk, stand for extended periods of time and bend, stoop, reach carry, crawl, climb, twist and reach while inspecting or repairing, digging or clearing, use various tools and equipment and lift as necessary to perform assigned duties; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling and fine manipulation; lift or carry weight of up to 50 pounds.

Education and Experience: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. One year of related experience in public works maintenance and/or construction work is desirable but not required.

Possession of: Valid California Driver's License

The City of American Canyon is seeking individuals who can perform an array of general clean-up and maintenance tasks in various City departments (Parks Maintenance is the current focus) and to provide assistance to regular employees engaged in skilled and semi-skilled duties. Duties will include but are not limited to field labor tasks as identified: shoveling/digging dirt, concrete, and asphalt; assisting with irrigation repairs, installations or adjustments; trimming and pruning trees and shrubs; and using a weed eater, lawn mower, blower and other light landscape equipment. Applicants must be able to walk up and down hill sides, push wheel barrows and equipment, and jackhammer asphalt and concrete. The individuals will work 24-27 hours per week and may include weekend work.  The positions are considered temporary/part-time and are limited to no more than 1,000 hours per fiscal year.
