Water Resources Mechanics perform a wide range of tasks involving mechanical maintenance and repairs of pumps, plumbing systems, electric motors, compressors, piping, boilers, underground infrastructure, facilities and buildings, carpentry, HVAC systems, mechanical drives, gear boxes, blowers, collectors, belt filter presses, and chemical feed systems. The work is done at the Water Reclamation Plant, located at 101 West Jack London Boulevard in Livermore.

A Water Resources Mechanic I performs a range of tasks requiring journey level mechanical ability and aptitude. Work assignments are performed according to established rules and procedures. Independent judgment is required and is supported at regular intervals by supervisory review and direction. A Water Resources Mechanic II is distinguished from the WR Mechanic I by the possession of advanced journey level mechanical ability and aptitude and is responsible for solving more difficult technical problems.

The Maintenance Operations Department is recruiting for the position of Street Maintenance Worker I.

• Selects proper tip and angle of cut for jackhammer.
• Operates compressor, jackhammer and other power tools.
• Under supervision operate loader, backhoe, or storm drain cleaning machines.
• Performs concrete repair work.
• Cuts lumber for concrete forms to proper size and place stakes.
• Breaks up and remove concrete.
• Spreads and level base rock.
• Mixes concrete; pour concrete into forms, tamp, jitterbug surface.
• Applies concrete finish with trowel, screed, float or other tools.
• Patch holes with fresh concrete.

 
Traffic Safety Assignment

• Replaces, maintains and repairs guard rails, traffic dividers, signs, and similar traffic control devices.
• Assists in determining color of paint to be applied to street markings.
• Selects proper stencils for street markings.
• Applies stripes and intervals for new street markings.
• Places stencils over old street markings, start compressor and spray inside stencils.
• Cleans and maintains spray equipment, including stencil truck; place and pick up traffic cones during the operation of the striping machine.
• Prepares traffic signs.
• Applies sheeting to metal sign blanks for background color, numbering and lettering.
• Trim sign edges.
• Assists with street sign installation.
• Participates in the installation of raised pavement markers.

Street Sanitation Assignment

• Controls and remove litter.
• Removes drain outlet cover.
• Cleans storm drains and lines using hand and power tools.

The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Camp Maintenance Mechanic (Non-Career Intermittent) in the Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department! In this role, you will have the opportunity to keep our camps running smoothly by performing both routine and heavy, physical work in the construction, maintenance, repair and cleaning of camp facilities. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is: Equivalent to graduation from high school, and one (1) year of experience in construction and maintenance.

State of California Drinking Water Treatment Certifications (Grade 1 or 2) desirable. Must possess and maintain a valid California non-commercial (Class C) driver's license, and have a satisfactory driving record. A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with major course work in civil or traffic engineering and five years of increasingly responsible traffic engineering experience, three years of which were at a level equivalent to the Assistant Transportation Engineer class. Progressively responsible related experience may be substituted for the college course work on a year for year basis.

Other requirements include possession of a valid California Registration as a professional Traffic Engineer or a professional Civil Engineer. A CA Registration as a Traffic Engineer is preferred. Candidates must also possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record. Desirable qualifications include a master's degree in Transportation Engineering/Planning or a related field.

Performs inspection for street re-surfacing public works projects. Clears and cleans roadsides, gutters, culverts and other drainage facilities. Participates in the removal, repair and replacement of storm drainage pipe. Due to variety of outdoor settings, needs to be able to work in all weather and terrain conditions. Due to 24-hour maintenance needs, needs to be able to work at all times of day and night. Operates light and heavy motorized construction and maintenance equipment including grappler, rollers, VacCon trucks, street sweepers, backhoes, compressors and pneumatic tools. Drives equipment to and from job sites. Loads and unload equipment; inspect equipment. Excavates, backfills, grades and rolls construction and repair sites. Cleans work sites and equipment. Perform preventative maintenance, adjustments and minor repairs on equipment. Cleans equipment. Greases, lubricates and fuels vehicles. Changes backhoe buckets and teeth. Perform various Sanitation tasks including drain inlet cleaning, storm line inspection and street sweeping. Performs heavy physical labor including lifting and carrying heavy objects, shoveling, raking and leveling asphalt.
