The Engineering Group Manager – Facilities will oversee a diverse and talented team responsible for managing the planning, design, and construction of capital projects at the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA). The Environmental Services Department provides comprehensive and innovative environmental utility services for Sunnyvale's residents and businesses and facilitates initiatives to achieve the City's sustainability objectives. The department brings together technical, operational, and administrative professional disciplines to form its dedicated and dynamic team.

The Environmental Services Department is currently recruiting for TWO vacancies, one regular full-time and one term-limited full-time (2 year assignment), in the position of Environmental Compliance Inspector to support the City's environmental inspection programs. These programs help protect our waterways and the San Francisco Bay by ensuring that businesses and residents are implementing best management practices to prevent water pollution and are in compliance with Federal and local water quality regulations. Environmental Compliance Inspectors work closely with a wide variety of businesses to ensure that the composition of their wastewater is in compliance with City requirements and does not compromise the integrity of the City's Water Pollution Control Plant or the sewer collection system. Such businesses range from aerospace and semiconductor manufacturers to dental offices and restaurants. The inspection team is also advancing multiple stormwater initiatives such as trash reduction and controls for pollutants of concern such as mercury and PCBs.

Under general direction, performs journey level inspection and enforcement activities on industrial, commercial, and residential discharges to the sewage and storm drain system for compliance with codes and laws regulating waste processes; and does other related work, as required.

The City of Sunnyvale is recruiting for a Principal Water Pollution Control Plan Operator.  This position, reporting to the Water Pollution Control Operations Manager, undertakes supervisory responsibilities at the Sunnyvale Water Pollution Control Plant (SWPCP). Their duties include providing instruction, troubleshooting, and maintenance related to plant operations, supervising training programs, ensuring efficient operation and maintenance of equipment, and coordinating with various stakeholders.

The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way:

• Graduation from high school or tested equivalent, and
• Five years of experience in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant with at least 3 years at the shift supervisor level as defined by the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB).  The Senior WPC Operator position at the SWPCP is considered equivalent to the SWRCB Shift Supervisor definition.
• Grade III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators Certificate issued by the California State Water Quality Control Board
• Class C California driver's license and a safe driving record

About the Position:  The incumbent will be a part of a cohesive team of 15 in the Natural Resources Department, which is part of the Visitor and Field Services service line. The Earth Sciences Program is comprised of 4 fulltime program staff, including this position, and a shared intern. This is a supervisory position for the Earth Sciences Program, comprised of water resources, soil conservation, archaeological resources, Native American relations, and climate program. Work Environment:  This position will report to Midpen’s Administrative Office in Los Altos, CA.  Midpen offers a hybrid office/telecommute work schedule for this position following successful onboarding.  In addition to working in an office setting to complete project tasks and at various venues across the San Francisco Peninsula to present information at public meetings, the Senior Resource Management Specialist will often work in the field and hike steep terrain and wildland areas with poison oak and wildlife.

Field Work: Fieldwork is integral to this position and dependent on the season and current projects.  Fieldwork will require driving District vehicles in remote areas on dirt roads, working in all weather conditions, and hiking through steep terrain and wildland areas. A Master’s Degree is desirable. Professional work experience with parks and open space is highly desired.

Licenses & Certifications Required:   Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.

 Paid intern positions are available within the Environmental Services Department. The positions are an excellent part-time opportunity for an individual with GIS skills wishing to obtain work experience in the Environmental Studies field. Current student enrollment is not required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

About the Department

This City’s Building Division provides oversight and assistance towards the City's growth and development in relation to construction activity on private property within the City.  The goal is to ensure the safety of buildings and to support the health and wellbeing of all persons living and working in San Jose through the implementation of the State of California’s current building codes and laws.

The Division is seeking applicants for the Associate Engineer classification within the Building Plan Review Services section. • Advising building inspectors on structural, fire and life-safety challenges arising in the field during the construction of a building project.

Qualifications

Experience: Associate Engineers working in the Building Division as plan reviewers must have four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in professional Civil Engineering work such as, Structural Engineering or Architectural Engineering with at least two (2) years of experience in design and construction of buildings.

Licenses: Possession of a valid State of California driver's license may be required. Other licenses or certifications may be required for positions. (Registration as a Civil Engineer or Architect with the State of California is preferred. Possession of ICC Plans Examiner certification is preferred).

Acceptable Substitution: A Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in the required professional engineering or architectural discipline may be substituted for one (1) year of professional engineering or architectural experience.

The City of Sunnyvale is seeking a highly motivated individual for the position of Senior Water Pollution Control Operator. The ideal candidates will have a journeyman level understanding of Wastewater Treatment and the associated equipment and controls required to operate those systems. The Sunnyvale Water Pollution Control Plant is a Class V Wastewater Treatment Facility with Recycled Water production.
The Sunnyvale Water Pollution Control Plant is undergoing an exciting transition, we are replacing original processes, structures and equipment with the latest treatment technologies and we would like you to be part of that upgrade.  The SWPCP is currently constructing new Screening, Pumping, Grit Removal, Sedimentation, Odor Control, Power Distribution and SCADA system as the first major replacement effort.  The Plant is also in design for a new Secondary Treatment process with Dewatering and Thickening to carry the city forward in our on-going effort to protect the bay and provide high quality Recycled Water.

The Senior Water Pollution Control (WPC) Operator provides support for their team members on an assigned shift. The Senior WPC Operator, as the shift supervisor oversees the operation, inspection and maintenance of the treatment process, plant equipment and facilities.  The Senior WPC Operator is a reliable communicator that prioritizes tasks and ensures that Operators, Maintenance, and other team members work in a safe and productive environment.

The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way:

Graduation from high school or tested equivalent, and

Three years of experience in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant.
