What You’ll Do

The Community Services Manager is responsible for planning, directing, and supervising the leisure, cultural, and human services activities of the Division and providing highly responsible professional and technical staff assistance. Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Plan, organize, coordinate and direct the work of subordinates in developing and implementing a broad and diversified community recreation and human services program.
• Participate as a member of the community-based network of Human Services Agencies.
• Develop and implement changes in staffing, goals, objectives, policies and procedures to ensure maximum effectiveness and efficiency.
• Develop programs of service to meet community needs including plans for efficient and economical use of labor, buildings, equipment and materials.
• Attend meetings of and prepare reports for Commissions and Advisory Groups; provide technical and professional advice and recommendations relating to recreation and human services.
• Respond to and resolve difficult resident inquiries and complaints.
• Prepare and administer the division budget, maintaining appropriate budgetary controls.
• Administer federal, state and special project grants.
• Participate in planning, organizing, and coordinating the development, construction, and maintenance of parks, recreation buildings, playground areas, and other facilities.
• Direct the scheduling of work projects and the determination of equipment, material and personnel needs with the Division.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
• Supervise the maintenance of a variety of records and reports.
• Select, supervise, train, and evaluate assigned personnel.

The Community Services Manager receives direction from the Director of Parks and Recreation or higher-level department personnel and exercises direct supervision over professional, technical and clerical staff.

The Position

The City of South San Francisco seeks customer service-oriented individuals to join the Community Resource Team at the new Library | Parks and Recreation Center. The Department

The South San Francisco Public Library is a full-service library committed to delivering quality services to a diverse community.  Library services are available at three sites, including the Main Library (901 Civic Campus Way), the Grand Avenue Library (306 Walnut Avenue) and the Gene Mullin Community Learning Center (520 Tamarack Lane).  Lifelong literacy services are provided by Project Read at the Main Library and the Gene Mullin Community Learning Center (GMCLC).  The City currently has one opening in this classification, for a position providing programs and services at the GMCLC.

The San Mateo Public Library is seeking a part-time (20 hours per week) Library Assistant I/II  in the Children Services Division at the Main Library The Library Assistant I/II works closely with the Supervising Librarian and the four merit Children’s Librarians to prepare and implement Children’s programs and services. What You'll Do

The Library Assistant I/II performs a wide variety of library support work and technical library tasks related to such activities as acquisition, cataloging, classification, circulation, and assisting patrons; and performs related work as required.  The current vacancy may be filled at either level based on experience.  Depending upon class level and assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Prepare print and non-print materials for introduction into the library materials collection, including use of an automated system to retrieve cataloging data and produce catalog cards; preparing and affixing identification labels and pockets to materials; pull discarded materials from catalog card files.
• Assign routine tasks and provide technical instruction to part time and other subordinate positions in area of responsibility.
• Assist in the acquisition, processing and maintenance of the periodical, microform, audio visual, business, historical, or other special collection for the library.
• Assist adults and children in locating materials in the library and in placing requests for materials not available.  Refer more difficult or technical questions to appropriate library staff.
• Handle patron complaints for overdue and lost materials; refer delinquent accounts to an agency for collection.
• Maintain statistics of library use; use computer produced and manual data to prepare reports on circulation processing, inquiries received and other activities.
• Assist in ordering and receiving books, records, cassettes, periodicals, and other library materials and preparing associated paperwork for payment.
• Perform routine clerical assignments, including typing, maintaining files, and routing mail.
• Use a microcomputer or the City's mainframe system for word processing, data file management, and statistical record keeping.
• Process incoming and outgoing interlibrary loan requests; receive and send requests via computer as well as by mail; verify requests for accuracy.
• Provide story hours to children and participate in other programs for children and young adults.
• Prepare and maintain displays and exhibits; develop artwork for publicity materials.

Through a grant obtained by the Burlingame School District, the Parks and Recreation Department is partnering to offer an afterschool program on each of the 6 elementary schools and to 6th grade students at BIS.  BPRD is looking for individuals who have a passion to work with youth. 

This position will be afterschool hours until 6:30pm, Monday through Friday. 

This is a temporary, part-time position and shifts may vary depending on the program and type of Recreation Leader (not to exceed 1,000 hours per fiscal year)

About the Position:

The position is under the direct supervision of the Recreation Department. 

Responsibilities

• Serve as a mentor and role model for participants, creating a positive and inclusive community on campus.

 Typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following:  

• Pick up students from Enrichment classes
• Provide activities until 6pm

Knowledge of:

Philosophy, methods and techniques used in planning and leading recreation programs as well as knowledge of safety, recreation equipment and materials.

Ability to:

Plan, organize, and lead a variety of recreational activities. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.  Ability to assimilate and understand information in a manner consistent with the essential job functions. The ability to relate effectively with the public.

Education and Training:

• Experience in recreational activities, effective communication and interaction skills with youth, and ability to collaborate with staff. Must be at least 15 years old.
• Recreation leader 1 and 2: Students under the age of 18 are required to obtain a work permit from their school. All staff 18+ are required to pass a fingerprint check submitted to the Department of Justice. 
• Sr. Recreation Leader: Sufficient education and experience to satisfactorily perform the duties of the classification.

License:  

• Valid California Class C driver’s license with satisfactory driving record.

Mandatory paid training dates:

• Complete Mandated Reporter Training (will be provided by City)
• Complete First Aid and CPR/AED Training (will be provided by City)

Benefits

Healthy Workplaces/Healthy Families Act: California Paid Sick Leave Benefit, as amended effective 1/1/2024. This benefit accrues at the rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked and is available after 90 days of employment. The maximum use of paid sick leave is 40 hours in a one-year period.  There is no cash value associated with benefit.

No other benefits are offered. This position is at will and is not part of the City's Civil Service System. There is no guarantee of hours and employment may end at any time.
