The Public Works Department is comprised of the Engineering and Facilities Services Division (EFSD) and the Environmental Services Division (ESD). Each division is led by a Deputy Director reporting to the Director of Public Works. The department is responsible for the City’s major capital projects and infrastructure including streets, street lights, traffic signals, sewer and storm conveyance systems, wastewater treatment plant, pump stations, a major lagoon, and dams and levees. A key player on this team is the Traffic and Lighting Technician. The Position

The Traffic and Lighting Technician performs skilled electrical and mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of traffic control signage, traffic signal equipment, and street lights; and guides the work of and trains other maintenance personnel, and performs related work as required.  Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Guide and participate in the work of other maintenance personnel.  Ability to set-up work zone safety and prepare traffic control work plans.
• Inspect, install, remove, and repair signal controls and auxiliary equipment such as light standards, control boxes, light fixtures, lamps, and circuitry; diagnose malfunctions; adjust and replace electronic and mechanical components.
• Inspect, install, remove and repair street lights and auxiliary equipment.
• Repair, replace or modify electric and electronic components, controllers, relays, switches, fuses, timers and other parts; design and construct special test equipment for shop testing of electronic components.
• Investigate complaints and reports of signal and traffic light malfunctions; adjust, repair or remove defective equipment; make field repairs of damaged equipment.
• Identify, locate and indicate with appropriate identification markers underground utilities (USA); respond to USA work orders within regulatory requirements; and document services accordingly.
• Be available for standby assignments in accordance with Department policies and procedures.
• Assist in the design of electrical circuits and systems for street lighting and traffic signals.
• Inspect the work of contractors during the course of construction and upon completion.
• Monitor traffic control computer and make adjustments as necessary.

The Traffic and Lighting Technician receives general direction from the Field Maintenance Manager and direct supervision from a Public Works Supervisor or higher level department staff and may exercise technical or functional direction over and provide work review to a Traffic Safety Worker or Maintenance Worker I/II.

THE POSITION: The Public Works Department at the City of San Mateo has an opportunity for up to three (3) interns who will assist on various municipal projects. Positions are considered for several fields of interest, including, but not limited to, the following examples:

• Capital Improvement Program (CIP) – Civil Engineering majors with an interest in capital improvement projects, design of civil infrastructure, and construction delivery procedures. Assist with project standards, standard specifications and drawings, CAD drafting, plan review, construction cost estimates, data collection and analysis.
• Traffic Engineering – Civil Engineering majors with an interest in parking, transportation, and traffic engineering. Assist with creating parking zone signage, mapping, program evaluations, document organization and filing, field data collection and analysis, traffic studies, and plan reviews.
• Right-of-Way & Development (ROWD) – Civil Engineering majors with an interest in civil design and permitting processes. Assist with plan review for land development, project entitlements, construction permitting, map review for land surveying, records research, data collection, construction site visits, customer service, and government affairs.
• Facilities and Fleet – Assist in a wide range of Facility Capital Improvement Projects (CIP), including ongoing maintenance programs, rehabilitation projects, and new buildings. Assistance with project management of CIP, and coordination and review of plans and documents, as well as other office and field related tasks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• BA/BS Candidate or MA/MS Candidate in civil engineering or related field as described above is highly desirable
• Facilities and Fleet position: BA/BS Candidate or MA/MS Candidate in Architecture or related field as an alternate to a BA/BS Candidate or MA/MS Candidate in civil engineering.
• Strong analytical, writing, research, and verbal skills; effective written and oral communication
• Valid California Driver’s License (Class C)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Ability to learn new information quickly
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Project) and web-based resources

DUTIES:

The primary duties will depend on the intern’s assigned position and associated field of interest and may include the following:

• Assisting engineering project managers with administrative or technical tasks
• Drafting engineering plans/standards in AutoCAD
• Creating map displays using Google Earth or GIS
• Gathering, compiling, and presenting data for engineering and construction projects
• Organizing and tracking inspection reports, testing results, invoices, and other construction documentation
• Conducting field assessments of the condition of streets, drainage/collection systems, and other infrastructure
• Investigating and proposing responses to questions or inquiries from residents
• Assist in other areas such as procurement, communication, public outreach, and public surveys.

In addition, the intern may work on a variety of other projects depending upon availability and workload.

Program Assistant - Receptionist

Salary Range: $18.52 - $30.68/hour, depending on experience.

 

DEFINITION

Perform a wide variety of general clerical and/ or operational support duties at the Danville Community Center and/ or Senior Center. Incumbent serves as the facility receptionist, assisting with customer service-related questions and issues, and directing callers and visitors according to established procedures.
 

• This is a part-time temporary, non-benefitted position.
• 0-20 hours per week; not-to-exceed 950 hours per calendar year.

 

SUPERVISION

Direct supervision is received from the Administrative Assistant with indirect supervision from the Recreation Superintendent. May exercise supervision of part-time personnel and volunteers as assigned.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Essential duties are inclusive of, but not limited to the following:

• Serve as first point of contact with the public; responds to information requests regarding services, classes, and events offered by the Town by email, in person or over the phone.
• Perform a wide variety of routine office duties to support department operations including filing, preparing basic reports, and program registration.
• Register participants, and support facility reservations using Active Net software.
• Performs cash handling duties, process payments, and issue receipts. 
• Assist in proofreading the Activity Guide and other marketing materials.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Facilities & Equipment Superintendent, this position performs all types of concrete work at District facilities as required.  May perform other duties as assigned within the Streets and Grounds Department, thus, will include working with the Laborers and Bridge Carpenter.

The Position

The City seeks a self-motivated Fire Inspector to ensure that the City’s fire inspection program provides an excellent level of service to the surrounding community. Under the general supervision of a Fire Battalion Chief / Fire Marshal, the Fire Inspector performs the full range of fire inspection duties including fire and life safety inspection, plan review, code enforcement activities, and assistance with fire investigations.

In addition to the technical duties involved with fire inspection, the Fire Inspector will have opportunities to educate and enrich the San Bruno community by planning and conducting public education programs and outreach regarding fire prevention, make presentations to civic organizations and school groups, as well as observing fire drills in schools, convalescent homes, businesses, and other places within the City.  

 

The Fire Inspector will also work cooperatively with internal City departments on inspections and projects, provide expert guidance and direct support for plan check reviews, including providing professional-level reviews, comments, and recommendations to ensure that work conforms to current fire code standards and established City policy and procedure.

The City of Menlo Park is currently accepting applications to fill a Mechanic vacancy in the Fleet Services Section of the Public Works Department. A Mechanic performs diagnostic, maintenance and repair services on light and heavy city vehicles and equipment, such as automobiles, storm/sewer trucks, aerial bucket trucks, dump trucks shuttle buses, construction equipment, lawn mowers, small equipment and stationary generators; and performs other duties as assigned.

The Mechanic performs a range of skilled tasks requiring journey level or advanced journey-level class mechanical ability and aptitude. Equipment Mechanic

This is the journey-level class in the Equipment Mechanic classification series responsible for performing the full range of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, gasoline and diesel repair and maintenance required for City vehicles, and equipment. Responsibilities include inspecting and attending to assigned areas in a timely manner, and performing a wide variety of tasks in the maintenance and repair of assigned vehicles and equipment. Incumbents are expected to work independently and exercise judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from other maintenance class series in that it performs more highly skilled technical and mechanical maintenance activities. This class is distinguished from Senior Equipment Mechanic in that the latter leads, trains, and oversees assigned work and performs the more complex and difficult work in mechanical maintenance and repair of City vehicles and equipment.

Senior Equipment Mechanic

This is the advanced journey-level class in the equipment mechanic classification series performing the most complex duties required to ensure that City vehicles and equipment are maintained in a safe and effective working condition and provide the highest level of safety for City use, and providing lead direction and training to full-time and temporary staff. Incumbents regularly work on tasks that are varied and complex, requiring considerable discretion and independent judgment. Positions in this classification rely on experience and judgment to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the assigned section. The work involves problem-solving of unique issues or increasingly complex problems without precedent and/or structure. Assignments are given with general guidelines and incumbents are responsible for establishing objectives, timelines, and methods to deliver work products. Work is typically reviewed upon completion for soundness, appropriateness, and conformity to policy and requirements. This classification is distinguished from the Fleet Supervisor in that the latter has oversight of the entire fleet division, system- assignments and projects, and responsibility for organizing, assigning, supervising, and reviewing the work of assigned staff involved in maintenance operations.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY:
The Business Operations Coordinator (BOC) is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring efficient systems to manage the District’s business office, properties, entrepreneurial enterprises, service and vendor contracts, media management, and IT support services. This includes ensuring compliance with regulatory mandates, facility requirements, and workplace safety.

The BOC is a full-time exempt position that reports directly to the CEO.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. 1. Provides comprehensive administrative and operational support to ensure effective implementation and community impact.
   1. Coordinates District-sponsored and community outreach events—in both virtual and in-person formats—in collaboration with District leadership.
   2. Provides oversight of the District office operations to identify opportunities to improve efficiencies, inventory and supplies management, document, and key security, tracking annual policy review and report filing requirements, and utilization of classroom facilities.
   3. Maintains a clean, well-organized office environment for team and visitors.
   4. Assists the Strategic Initiatives Director in managing the Community Health Investment portfolio, including utilizing and maintaining the District’s grant management software to track and support the community grants program.
   5. Oversees and manages district office operations and leasing budgets.
   6. Maintains IT services, triaging issues, tracking performance of various pieces of equipment, and helping identify IT issues that may benefit from more user training.
   7. Assists with accounting tasks as directed by CEO, including processing bank deposits and printing checks with Staff Accountant.
   8. Maintains a system for managing and regularly auditing vendor contracts to ensure compliance with performance obligations and identify opportunities for cost and service improvements.
   9. Contributes to the overall success of the District by providing support to programs and initiatives as assigned by the CEO.
2. Serving as primary PHCD contact for tenants, property manager, and vendors serving the eight District-owned properties This includes such activities as:
   1. Tracks lease terms and rent increases and taking timely, appropriate actions via Doorloop.
   2. Maintains effective tenant relationships with professionals and their staff.
   3. Establishes and carrying out a preventative maintenance program for all buildings in collaboration with the CFO and property manager.
   4. Primary liaison for facilities consultants
   5. Makes periodic rounds to ensure tenants are compliant with their property maintenance obligations.
   6. Works with leasing agent when a vacancy occurs.
3. Overseeing and strengthening all District communication channels, ensuring consistency, compliance, and effective public engagement.
   1. Manages all District websites are compliant with regulatory and special district transparency requirements, content is current, and sites are “user-friendly”
   2. Serves as primary liaison with the District’s communications and website professionals
   3. Serves as primary point person for coordinating, producing, and tracking analytics of external communications for websites, e-newsletter, social media, and related materials, in collaboration with the CEO, Directors, and District communications and marketing professionals.
4. In the absence of the Executive Assistant:
   1. Provides administrative support to Board Members, Board Committees, including scheduling meetings, preparing and distributing noticed meeting materials, and coordinating meeting logistics.
   2. Supports the CEO and Board with daily calendar management, communications, event and conference bookings, annual board policy review, staff meetings, and District transparency recertifications.

COMPENSATION & BENEFIT S
This is a full-time position. Compensation range based on experience: $55,000 - $85,000.
DOE. In addition, Peninsula Health Care District benefits include: CalPers Pension, CalPers
Health, Delta Dental Plan, VSP Vision Plan and Life Insurance as well as 10 paid holidays
during the year. Accrued PTO- (eligible for up to 13 days in the first year of employment).

Assistant Director of Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BRHS).

Application/Examination

Open & Promotional. Anyone may apply. Current County of San Mateo and County of San Mateo Superior Court of California employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, extra-help/limited term positions prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination.

The examination process will consist of an application screening (Pass/Fail) based on the candidate’s application, cover letter, resume, and responses to the supplemental questions. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to participate in a panel interview (weight: 100%).

Candidates invited to interview will also be required to submit a written work product in advance of the interview. The work product will be evaluated by the panel and may be incorporated into the interview through discussion, follow-up questions, or a brief presentation.

Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or additional evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination.
