The City of Patterson is recruiting for a Fire Prevention Inspector.  This position performs fire inspection and fire prevention activities; enforces fire codes, laws and regulations related to fire protection, prevention and safety;  inspects new and existing buildings and a variety of structures, sprinkler systems and alarm systems; conducts plan and specification reviews to ensure compliance with fire codes; enforces the City and Fire District's weed abatement ordinance; develops and administers the Department’s public fire safety education programs and public relations programs; investigates routine complaints of fire/life safety hazards; establishes and maintains a variety of records and files on program activities; conducts research and writes a variety of reports; and performs related duties as required.

Planning, Building and Code Enforcement position:

The Public Information team works closely in support of each of the Department's divisions to provide information to the public and within the organization. ?The Department is currently seeking a highly qualified and experienced individual to fill the role of Public Information Manager. As the Public Information Manager, you will be responsible for developing and implementing public information strategies to effectively disseminate information to the public, media, and other stakeholders regarding the department's operations, policies, and initiatives.

Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services position:

The PRNS Department is seeking an experienced senior communicator with a diverse skillset to establish and guide the strategy for all communications, website, public relations messages, and collateral to represent the PRNS Department to the public. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent writing and presentation skills and have substantial experience with developing and executing effective communication plans using a wide range of appropriate tactics, including traditional and new media. Creativity, good judgment, initiative, and a collaborative attitude are essential, as well as the skills necessary in developing strategic partnerships, including with potential partners and donors, to ensure that equitable access to recreational opportunities are provided to all San José residents.

The City of Patterson is recruiting for a Firefighter Paramedic.  This safety position will respond to fire alarms, emergency medical calls, traffic accidents, rescue and other emergency calls to protect life and property.  This position will also participate in trainings, drills, study activities and in the maintenance of the department apparatus, equipment, and facilities.  Under the supervision of the Fire Engineer or Fire Captain, performs ALS care to patients of medical emergencies and other medical procedures. Performs other duties as required.

Deputy Fire Marshal
Salary Range: $6,750.00 to $13,383.33 Monthly
 

This position will report directly to the Fire Marshal. The Deputy Fire Marshal is an advanced level position. Duties include, but are not limited to reading, interpreting, and enforcing all State statutes and regulations under the authority of the State Fire Marshal (SFM), and all standards as adopted by SFM as well as UCDH policies. This position will act as a technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and recognized expertise in specific areas. This position will regularly lead projects of critical importance to the organization; these projects carry substantial consequences of success or failure. May direct programs with organizational-wide impacts that include formulating strategies and administrating policies, policies, processes, and resources. In this position, the individual will perform detailed inspections of buildings under the authority of the UCDH Fire Marshal’s Office. Provide fire and life safety education to occupants. Analyze hazardous materials and functional use of space during construction plan review and validate post-occupancy use for compliance. This position may serve as State Fire Marshal (SFM) Designated Campus Fire Marshal (DCFM) for the UCDH Hospital and other UCDH medical¬ related facilities. Note, that SFM has the sole authority to approve a candidate as an SFM DCFM.

Additionally, persons in this position are expected to perform plan reviews, construction inspections, and existing building inspections, participate in the Incident Command System, and understand and apply Joint Commission and CMS requirements, NFPA Standards, and California Code of Regulations.

Required Qualifications 
Applicants are encouraged to upload license and certification if required of the position. 

• OSFM Fire Inspector 2A- 2D training class series and/or ICC Building Code Certification.
• Must possess a valid California Driver’s License
• Five (5) years of experience in building, fire, or hazardous materials inspections.
• College education/training equivalent to a BS level in Fire Science, Construction, Chemistry, or similar related field.
• Experience working within “Authority Having Jurisdiction” for enforcement of regulations, or someone who has completed an apprenticeship (time/experience) and is fully educated/experienced in construction.

Preferred Qualifications 

• OSFM Certification as a Fire Inspector 2
• ICC Building Code Official Certification
• Hazardous Material Inspection experience.
• Experience in hospital inspections &/or construction.
• Thorough knowledge and skill in one or more of the following fields: Hazardous Materials Inspections, Laboratories, Hospital &/or Construction Inspections.
• Demonstrates excellent working knowledge of the California Health and Safety Code sections under the authority of the Office of the State Fire Marshal, California Code of Regulations Title 24, NFPA, and other standards required for Fire Prevention activities within the state of California.
• The ability to manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources while functioning with a high degree of autonomy.
• Decision-making is based on established procedures and integration/interpretation of relevant laws, regulations, and organizational policy; professional best practices; relevant science methodology, impact on other UCDH programs; and senior management approvals. Decisions may impact other programs, departments, segments of the organization, and/or organization wide.
• Knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the job; ability to intermittently analyze work papers, reports, and special projects; identify and interpret technical and numerical information; observe and problem solve operational and technical policies and procedures; determine compliance; identity, interpret, explain, and enforce violations; review and interpret codes and rules; maintain awareness of safety at all times.
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills to effectively communicate with UCDH Administrators, Contractors, Consultants, and Regulatory Agencies.

• Ability to exercise independent judgment in solving issues and adhering to the UCDH Policies and Procedures.

Special Requirements 

• Must participate in the department’s DMV Pull Notice Program. Must pass a pre-employment Live Scan Fingerprinting Background check.
• Administrative deadlines or emergency incidents will require the incumbent to work a certain amount of unscheduled non-paid overtime.
• Typically, this position provides services during normal business hours of operation; however, the individual must be able to work flexible hours that can include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Occasional overtime as required to meet operational needs.
• Ability to work in a high-stress structured environment.
• Ability to maintain maximum confidentiality and professionalism while working with complex issues.
• Ability to work in a non-smoking environment.
• The incumbent will be exposed to alarms and other auditory warning devices. Must be able to function in a multi-disciplinary and fast-paced work environment while maintaining the need for quality, accuracy, completeness, and timelines.
• This position requires individuals to have the mobility to climb ladders and stairs and be able to differentiate between various alarm signals.
• This position may, at times require the incumbent to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present and, as such, the incumbent will be required to participate in a medical monitoring program and other programs necessary to enter a hazardous materials environment.
• Will be required to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions; tolerate very hot and very cold temperatures; walk over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; work at heights greater than 10 feet; climb ladders or steps to reach objects; work in small, cramped areas; bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time; discriminate among colors or match colors of wiring systems and color-coded valves and piping; stand or walk for extended periods of time with the inability to rest at will and use arms above shoulder level. When not performing duties in the field, incumbents work in an indoor office setting and are required to enter data into a terminal, PC, or keyboard device; produce written documents using proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling; use graphic instructions, blueprints, and layouts as part of the plan review process when checking for code compliance; and sit for extended periods of time with the ability to move at will.

The District 8 Council Office, supporting Councilmember Domingo Candelas, is recruiting for a Chief of Staff position. The position will work closely with the Councilmember and lead the staff support team for the Councilmember. The Chief of Staff is an integral link between the Councilmember and the Mayor and City Council colleagues, City administration, and the community. The Chief of Staff must have excellent oral and written communication skills, effective organizational, analytical, and management skills, and a dedication to public service. The position requires the ability to develop and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with community members and neighborhood organizations, key stakeholders, and City staff. The Chief of Staff will serve as a liaison to the Councilmember and will regularly represent the Councilmember at City-related meetings and functions. The City of San Jose, Animal Care and Services Division is seeking two (2) full-time Animal Shelter Veterinarians and multiple part-time Animal Shelter Veterinarians to work at the Animal Care Center. The Animal Shelter Veterinarian may perform all aspects of shelter medicine in a large animal shelter. Duties may include routine spay/neuter surgeries on cats, dogs, and other animals as indicated. This position provides direct care and treatment of homeless animals entering the City of San Jose’s Animal Care Center.

In addition, this position is required to diagnose, treat, and/or recommend euthanasia. Registered Veterinary Technicians will be assigned to assist this position with the preparation and post-surgery processes of spay/neuter and other surgical procedures. 

The full-time benefited position and part-time unbenefited positions will be reporting to the Medical Services Director (Division Manager) of Animal Care and Services. This classification is represented by City Association of Management Personnel (CAMP).

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Directs, coordinates and performs the screening, diagnosis, and basic and emergency medical treatment of animals in the shelter.
• Performs or supervises the visual monitoring of impounded animals, including those that may be isolated or quarantined for signs of illness or unusual behavior.
• Performs surgical procedures, including spay/neuters and vaccinates animals to prevent diseases.
• Maintains accurate medical records of animals.
• Effectively communicates the condition and status of animals with shelter staff to allow shelter staff to communicate with public.
• Advises staff on matters within the veterinary field.
• Orders, maintains and controls the drugs used at the shelter and in the field.
• Trains appropriate staff in administering first aide and vaccinations to animals, the performance of euthanasia and other paramedical duties.
• Performs and directs staff to perform euthanasia of animals that are irremediably suffering from serious illness or severe injury, as necessary
• Ensures that shelter staff participates in a comprehensive disease prevention program for the animal shelter.
• Participates in special spay/neuter or vaccination clinics.
• Supervises staff to include: prioritizing and assigning work; providing technical guidance to staff; ensuring staff are trained; and making hiring, termination and disciplinary recommendations.
• Ensures compliance of activities to codes and all legal regulations.

Physical Requirements 
 
Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 50 pounds while handling animals and equipment. Employees may be exposed to cold and hot temperatures, loud noises, odors, dust, air contaminants, blood borne pathogens while using hypodermic needles on animals and may be exposed to animal scratches and bites.

• Upon successful completion of the Public Safety Officer Academy Attendee/Graduate requirements, incumbents promote to Public Safety Officer I ($117,913 - $136,499).
• Upon successful completion of all phases of training, members of the Public Safety Officer I classification promote to Public Safety Officer II ($124,775 - $155,457 annually).
• This position has an excellent benefit package, including 2.7% at 57 retirement plan.

Under immediate supervision of a Public Safety Lieutenant or Captain, either currently attends the California POST Basic Academy and is learning to perform a wide range of public safety work involving the protection of life and property including law enforcement, crime prevention, fire suppression, rescue, and basic life support activities; or has graduated from the California POST Basic Academy within the last 12 months; and performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS 

The position of Public Safety Officer Academy Attendee/Graduate is the training level classification for general police and fire work for those incumbents not affiliated with an agency and currently enrolled in a police academy. Incumbents are not sworn personnel and are generally in this classification until successful completion of the police academy. Assignment to this classification is temporary. If incumbents do not successfully complete a police academy, they will be terminated.  Incumbents hired after the graduation from the California POST Basic Academy are not sworn personnel and are generally in this classification until they are promoted to Public Safety Officer I.

Public Safety Officer Academy Attendee/Graduate is distinguished from the higher-level Public Safety Officer I in that the latter is a sworn position where incumbents continue training for both police and fire duties. Incumbents must successfully complete the police academy prior to being promoted to the classification of Public Safety Officer I.
