Representative Duties

1. Perform professional and technical engineering work relative to assigned area of responsibility, such as design, land development, and capital improvements.
2. Design and prepare plans and specifications for public works projects including pumping stations, streets, storm drains, sewer lines, and related projects; research project design requirements; perform calculations and prepare estimates of time and material costs.
3. Answer inquiries from realtors, developers, engineers, and the general public.
4. Develop revised design and construction standards for public works structures and appurtenances.
5. Serve as construction inspector to ensure compliance on City projects, subdivisions, and encroachments.
6. Investigate field problems affecting property owners, contractors, and maintenance operations; resolve problems or refer as appropriate; coordinate or perform field work associated with infrastructure projects.
7. Administer contracts; coordinate and review the work of outside consultants; review and recommend payments and billing for contracted services related to assigned projects.
8. Write legal descriptions for right of way and easement dedications.
9. Issue encroachment, water, and sewer permits.
10. Request and participate in the collection of survey and mapping data.
11. Prepare estimates and feasibility reports for new or modified services and structures.
12. Participate in the plan check, review, and processing of plans for private developments affecting City streets, sewers, drains and related public works facilities; assure compliance with appropriate codes, ordinances, rules and regulations.
13. Attend and participate in professional group meetings; maintain awareness of new trends and developments in the field of municipal engineering; incorporate new developments as appropriate into programs.
14. Prepare visual presentations and reports.
15. Prepare special engineering studies and reports.
16. Coordinate public works activities with other City departments, divisions and sections and with outside agencies.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Associate Engineer

Education/Training:

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or a related field.

Experience:

Two years of responsible engineering experience equivalent to that of an Assistant Engineer in the City of Ceres.

License or Certificate:

Possession of a valid, California Driver License.

Possession of an LSIT or EIT certificate.

Reporting to the Building Official, this specialized classification performs the full range of duties related to building inspection and code compliance activities required to ensure compliance with the City’s Municipal Code as well as the full range of routine to complex inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings; investigates citizen complaints of public nuisances and quality of life issues and seeks voluntary compliance or issues citations and initiates abatement procedures; performs inspections at various stages of construction, alteration, and repair of residential, commercial, and industrial building sites to enforce building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and environmental codes, and other governing laws and ordinances, including basic zoning, grading, fire, and safety regulations; reviews applications and conducts inspections on a wide range of business licenses and special events permits such as those for massage establishments, special events, and noise exemptions; and performs related work as required.

City offices operate on a 9/80 schedule: Monday-Thursday for 9 hours, 8-hours one Friday, off/closed the other Friday. This position is located at City Hall, 13777 Fruitvale Avenue; operational hours are 7:30 am-5:00 pm.

ABOUT THE POSITION
The City of Gilroy is actively seeking two (2) full-time Community Engagement Coordinators (CEC) to join the City Administration Department and the Gilroy Police Department. In this dynamic role, the CECs will collaborate with the Administration and Police Department teams to enhance the City's public relations, drive community outreach initiatives, and effectively disseminate information to support the City's operations, services, and policies and procedures.  Under the supervision of the assigned manager, the Community Engagement Coordinator for the City of Gilroy plays a key role in improving various programs. As an as-needed employee, this is an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

Minimum Qualifications

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum Education Requirements: 

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED

 

Minimum Experience Requirements: 

• The equivalent of two (2) years of paid employment experience in public safety dispatching within the past five (5) years of which at least one (1) year included solo status; or
• Five (5) years of current paid employment with a public safety agency or private emergency medical services agency, with high level Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), radio and/or telephone operation; or
• Successful completion of probationary period as a Public Safety Dispatcher I with the City of Santa Clara.

 

License/Certifications: 

Possession of a current P.O.S.T. Basic Dispatch certificate is required.

 

Other Requirements:  

• Incumbents must have the ability to work, as assigned, on schedules that may include Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, and non-traditional work hours.
• Must be able to perform all the essential functions of the job assignment.  All candidates will be required to pass a City background investigation, which will include fingerprinting and/or psychological testing.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the general supervision of a Senior Public Safety Dispatcher or Watch Commander and the overall direction of the Communications Operations Manager.

 

The City of Sunnyvale invites applications for Public Safety Dispatcher in Training. Under supervision and in a trainee capacity, processes emergency and non-emergency calls for service; dispatches police, fire, medical, rescue, animal control or other emergency equipment, by telephone or radio, utilizing complex technical aids, such as computer aided dispatch systems (CAD); and performs other related duties as assigned.

Public Safety Dispatcher-In-Training is the entry and trainee level in the public safety dispatcher series. Under close supervision, incumbents are trained in dispatching techniques, equipment, and protocols. Work assignments change frequently to facilitate training. Employees are subject to daily and weekly observation reports until they demonstrate the ability to perform independently. This is an alternately staffed classification. Public Safety Dispatcher-In-Training incumbents are required to achieve the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to advance to the Public Safety Dispatcher level within the twelve-month probationary period.

The Position 
As a Public Safety Dispatcher II, this non-sworn classification dispatches public safety, fire, and emergency medical services out into the community. The successful incumbent will be responsible for receiving incoming calls for police, fire, or medical assistance and dispatch necessary units. This classification is distinguished from the Public Safety Dispatcher I by a broader range of responsibility due to a higher level of experience and training.  

Candidates must attain a passing score on each phase of the examination process to qualify for the Eligible List. A department interview will be required prior to appointment.

This class is distinguished from the Senior Public Safety Dispatcher in that the latter has full responsibility for supervising a shift of Public Safety Dispatchers I/II.

PERMANENT CITY EMPLOYEES PREFERENCE POINTS

The Office of Mayor Matt Mahan is recruiting for a Council Policy & Legislative Director, seeking a highly qualified professional to serve as a member of the Mayor’s Policy Team. The position will work on several priority initiatives, making recommendations, and developing action plans for meeting the Mayor’s policy objectives. Policy areas of focus may include public safety, housing, homelessness, environment, neighborhood quality of life, land use, or economic development.

The total salary range for the Council Policy & Legislative Director is $68,619.98 - $109,791.76. This amount includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable pay. The actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities for the position may include, but are not limited to the following:

• • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with City Council offices, City departments, community organizations, residents, business community, non-profit organizations, and government agencies as they are key partners on policy and as a representative of the Mayor’s Office.
  • Coordinate projects citywide with City administration.
  • Lead initiatives within an assigned policy portfolio. Drive policy priorities through government and legislative process. Research best practices on assigned policy portfolio.
  • Gather background information relative to issues pending before the City Council.
  • Draft routine to complex correspondence, memoranda, and reports which articulate the Mayor’s policy initiatives.
  • Prepare speeches and talking points for the Mayor.
  • Coordinate arrangements for meetings, programs, or other civic functions on behalf of the Mayor.
  • Attend meetings and community events with the Mayor, requires occasional availability on evenings and weekends.
  • Gather background information relative to issues pending before the City Council
  • Analyze a wide variety of materials on assigned projects, programs, and topics.
  • Respond to constituent inquiries and issues, resolving complaints, and interpreting operating policies for residents of the community and other interested parties.
  • Attend and represent the Mayor at City-related meetings and activities, meeting with governmental agencies, private industry, and related meetings.
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as required.
  • Conduct public meetings and events on behalf of the Mayor and/or prepare summaries of public and private meetings, reports, memoranda, and other documents for review by the Mayor.
  • Provide support in community engagement efforts with neighborhood, district or citywide business or community groups or associations and other interested parties regarding community concerns, issues, and priorities.

Employees in this classification are not members of the classified civil service and appointment would be on a contract “at-will” basis and is for a specified period of time to be determined by the appointing Councilmember and does not extend past the end of the elected official's or appointing authority's term. Candidates must be willing to work evenings and weekends on occasion, and as exempt management employees, are not eligible for overtime compensation. This unclassified position requires a disclosure of outside investments, real property interest, income and business positions.

The San José Fire Department is recruiting to fill (3) three Hazardous Materials Inspector II positions in the Bureau of Fire Prevention Division. The Hazardous Materials Inspector II’s may be assigned to Hazardous Materials Development Services group to perform plan reviews and inspections, or to Hazardous Materials Code Enforcement group to conduct detailed field inspections at facilities storing, handling, or using hazardous materials including highly hazardous materials unique to Silicon Valley. Both group activities do cross over, as required for back up and special demands and for cross training, as needed.

 

The Hazardous Materials II inspector inspects, reviews, and enforces commercial and industrial facilities for compliance with the San Jose Fire Code, California State Fire Marshal (CSFM) regulations, CSFM adopted sections of the California Building Code Series, San Jose Hazardous Materials Storage Permit Ordinance, S and applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) nationally recognized standards.

 

Duties for this position include, but may not be limited to:

 

• Providing technical assistance to facilities, consultants, architects, engineers, contractors, department officers/staff and the Fire Marshal on the application and/or interpretation of fire safety codes/regulations and on resolution of fire safety and hazardous materials issues identified in the design, construction or operations of buildings and integrated systems;

• Reviewing and analyze hazardous materials inventory statements for chemical classification;

• Reviewing and analyze hazardous materials business plans, construction documents, monitoring and treatment system plans for compliance with codes and regulations;

• Inspect commercial and industrial facilities and construction sites including reviewing facility maintenance records and document finding in inspections reports.

• Conducting enforcement as necessary including preparing citations and other administrative orders, conducting compliance meetings,

• Preparing enforcement cases for the City Attorney and District Attorney including the preparation of analytical data, reports, assisting in interpreting laws and regulations and providing court testimony, as required;

• Responding to complaint investigations for alleged violations of the aforementioned codes and standards.

• Assisting outside agencies and other City Departments including, Code Enforcement, Building Department, Planning Department, Public Works, and Environmental Services-Wastewater Pretreatment.

• Conduct public record request record searches

• Participate in the review of plans submitted for development projects for verification of code compliance with municipal codes.   

• Provide written plan review comments to development project applicants identifying discrepancies identified after compliance reviews.

• Conduct Hazardous Materials system installation and closure inspections for code compliance verification. 

• Assist with training of staff as requested.

 

Salary

Hazardous Materials Inspector II: $106,950.48 - $129,948.00 annually. This amount includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable pay. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.
