Temporary program assistants support a wide variety of programs including recreation centers, gymnasium and sports, youth camps, administrative offices, and senior center programs. The City of Menlo Park currently has part time Program Assistant job openings in the following areas:

The Department

The Library and Community Services department is responsible for providing excellent customer service through recreational, educational, and cultural programs for children, adults and seniors. Our facilities include 221 acres of parkland distributed among 13 parks, two libraries, two community centers, two public pools, three childcare centers, two gymnasiums, and one gymnastics center. Included in the parks and recreation areas are tennis and pickleball courts, dog parks, softball diamonds, picnic areas, playgrounds, soccer fields, a skate park, shared use of a performing arts center and open space.  The City of Menlo Park is preparing to open a state-of-the-art new facility that will incorporate a community center, gymnasium, aquatics center, senior center, youth center, and branch library in 2024.

The City of Brisbane is currently accepting applications for Recreation Leaders. Under direct supervision, the Recreation Leader implements and facilitates well-rounded programs in youth after-school programs, pre-school program, day camps, sports leagues, and special events at designated recreation facilities; and maintains a safe and enjoyable environment for recreation program participants.  This position involves face-to-face leadership and considerable contact with youth ages 5 to 12 years.  A full job description is available at www.brisbaneca.org.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (Illustrative Only):

• Initiates and leads defined youth recreation and sports programs.
• Maintains discipline and observes the overall well-being of the participants and the program.
• Plans various youth recreational and educational programs appropriate for the age and skill level of the participants.
• Leads, teaches and coaches sports to youth or organized teams.
• Observes required safety precautions.
• Maintains attendance and activity records.
• Maintains open lines of communication with participants and/or their parents.
• Makes recommendations regarding youth recreation programs.

The Youth Development and Athletics Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the Youth Development and Athletics divisions. planning, organizing, directing and implementing recreation programs and community events, requiring extensive face-to-face interaction with the public.

As our next Recreation Supervisor for the Youth Development and Athletics divisions, you will have the opportunity to be responsible for the following objectives:

• Supervise the full-time Youth Development and Athletics Recreation Coordinators, part-time staff and volunteers. Reports to the Recreation Manager.
• Develop plans for the delivery of recreation programs and community events to the public in accordance with the objectives set by the Recreation Manager and the Parks and Recreation Director. 
• Analyzes the demand for programs, projects program costs, and determines the extent to which fees will be required to support delivery of the programs. Ensures plans integrate the program objectives set by the Parks and Recreation Director and maximize user satisfaction within budget constraints.  Establishes positive working relations with the community and deals with the public in a courteous and effective manner. 
• Solicits participant input to gauge participant reaction to program quality.  Uses evaluation results and past program experience to plan new programs. Effectively plans programs that are convenient to users and participants to promote high levels of attendance and facility use.
• Maintains a competent and motivated work force by exhibiting leadership skills and by maintaining continual supervisory contact with their subordinates and volunteers.  Objectively and constructively evaluates their performance, promptly apprising them of how well they are performing and/or in what specific areas they should seek improvement.
• Provides timely and detailed input to the Recreation Manager and Parks and Recreation Director for the preparation of the budget, adequately documenting the amount and levels of service to be provided.  Keeps expenditures within the limits set.
• Ensures that the revenue for recreation, community and social service programs is handled according to established management policies.
• Effectively promotes and fosters public awareness of recreation programs by appearing before community groups, developing social media marketing, and preparing content to be included in various City newsletters/outreach materials throughout the year.
• Keeps current of changing needs within recreation and community and social service programs.  Remains flexible in ensuring necessary modifications are made.
• Participates in evening and weekend City-wide special events and programs.
• Inspects recreation facilities to ensure they are safe for use by recreation program participants and are presented in a satisfactory appearance.
• Exhibit effective leadership and instruction skills in recreation programs and community events for which they are responsible. Effectively communicate these skills and techniques to participants and staff members.

• Perform a wide variety of tasks such as writing program descriptions, proofreading/editing marketing content, taking photos or selecting imagery to be used in marketing campaigns.
• Assists in the preparation and oversight of the Youth Development and Athletics budgets, summarizing results at program and fiscal year end.

What type of experience and education do you need to be a successful Recreation Coordinator?

A typical qualifying background would be three (3) years of professional experience in the field of Parks and Recreation and a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, with major course work in recreation or a related field.

DEFINITION: Under general supervision the aide assists in planning, organizing, and implementing preschool programming for children ages 3-5 years old. Program hours are M-F PM 8:30am – 1:00pm and/or MWF 8:30am - 1:00pm. Approximately 15 – 30 hours a week. Substitute and floating positions also available 8:30am - 1:00pm. 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Assists in the development, coordination, planning, implementing and supervising the day-to-day activities, themes and special events for an ongoing preschool program.
• Create and maintain a safe, challenging and creative environment.
• Supervise and engage preschool students during preschool hours.
• Demonstrate excellent customer service and communicate effectively with co-workers, parents, and children.
• Maintain registration, attendance, and activity records; ensure the proper pick-up/drop-off of children. 
• Encourage good behavior, appropriate manners, read books and provide a safe and nurturing environment.
• Implement and lead appropriate activities for preschool-aged children.
• Possess strong leadership skills in one or more of the following areas: art, crafts, sports, drama, cooking.
• Motivate children by example; create and maintain a positive environment.
• Must be a team player and have the ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
• Practice proper hygiene, with self and children, to deter the spread of disease (colds, flu, etc).
• Render first aid in case of minor injuries.
• Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
• The ability to speak English clearly and understandably.
• Perform related duties as required.
• Must be able to lift 50lbs

TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education, training, and experience, which likely provides the required knowledge and abilities.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS: Candidates receiving a conditional job offer must pass a pre-placement fingerprint review. Candidate must provide a TB negative test result document. Candidates must possess a current CPR/AED and First Aid certificate and be comfortable calling 911 in an emergency.

KEY DATES: CANDIDATES SELECTED FOR AN INTERVIEW SHOULD ENSURE THEIR AVAILABILITY ON THE FOLLOWING DATES:

• Soccer Referee Interviews: 8/19, 8/20/25, and 8/21/25 between 3:30PM and 4:45PM 

• Soccer Referee Trainings: 9/8/25, 9/9/25, and 9/12/25

• First Game: 9/13/25

Please keep in mind that if selected you will have to pass a background check. In order to get fingerprinted you MUST HAVE A VALID DRIVERS LICENSE, STATE ISSUED ID, or VALID PASSPORT.  It takes between 2-6 weeks to receive your STATE ISSUED ID, if done early this should be enough time before the soccer season begins. 

Individuals must be able to officiate and control games, events, and competitions in a confident, appropriate manner. Ensure all participants understand and comply with game rules and assess penalties when needed. Make game calls with confidence and knowledge of league rules. Keep track of event start times, and start or stop play as necessary.
