The City of Santa Clara currently has three (3) openings in its Senior Engineering Technician classification. The current openings are within Silicon Valley Power (the Electric Utility Department), the Water & Sewer Utilities Department, and the Department of Public Works.
Silicon Valley Power
Silicon Valley Power, Asset Management Group has an excellent opportunity for the position of Senior Engineering Technician. Job responsibilities include, preparing scaled and dimensioned plans based on sketches prepared by engineering and/or estimating personnel, maintaining records of as-builts and updating existing SVP maps and records utilizing ESRI-based GIS applications, maintaining master map files, including such records of block maps, street light maps, fiber communication, electric utility single line and operating diagrams and other maps, performing computing and drafting operations in AutoCAD, involvement in checking drawings of electric utility facilities, and performing other duties as assigned.
Water and Sewer Utilities
The Water and Sewer Utilities Department is looking for a Senior Engineering Technician who desires to become a Water and Sewer Utility professional and support a talented group of engineers, administrative staff and utility operators with the sole aim of delivering safe, reliable utility services and excellent customer service to the community of Santa Clara. The Senior Engineering Technician will prepare exhibits, update CAD files, access and update asset management software, update spreadsheets and project folders, perform site visits, perform field measurements, perform research tasks, support the water sampling program, support plan checks, prepare construction documents, perform field inspections, update block books and communicate with customers, contractors, consultants, engineers, inspectors, and operators.
The ideal candidate should be proficient in AutoCAD, the Microsoft Office Suite, working with PDF formats, navigating folder directories, and communicating effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders. Any experience, skills or certification related to the water, recycled water, sewer or general civil engineering industry is desired.
Department of Public Works
The City of Santa Clara's Department of Public Works seeks a results-oriented and innovative individual to serve out the Department's mission to provide the highest quality public works services to the residents of Santa Clara, the development community, and our customers in a responsible and efficient manner. The Department has focus areas that include Engineering Services and Operations and Maintenance. Engineering Services is comprised of four engineering divisions: 1) Design, 2) Field Services, Land and Property Development, and Traffic Engineering as listed below. The Operations and Maintenance focus area includes operations and maintenance of public roadways, parkways and boulevards, City trees, street sweeping, environmental programs, storm drain systems, fleet, solid and mixed waste/recyclables, and City facilities. Currently, the Field Services Division of the Department of Public Works (DPW) is looking for individuals for the position of Senior Engineering Technician. This position will provide support to the Field Services division through updates to the Geographic Information System (GIS) system, AutoCAD, and miscellaneous databases. This position will coordinate internally with various DPW staff to maintain system records and support their needs to successfully complete their projects on time.
The ideal candidate should have experience using and editing AutoCAD software. The Senior Engineering Technician will assist the City Surveyor with topographic, monument, and benchmark surveys conducted in the field. Additionally, the technician will help restore missing or damaged monuments and benchmarks and perform administrative tasks such as filing permits, updating block books, conducting research, and carrying out field inspections and investigations. Employees in this role are expected to be fully trained in all procedures related to their assigned responsibilities. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief of Party, a Professional Engineer, or a Principal Engineering Technician, who assigns tasks and reviews work to ensure compliance with instructions and established engineering standards.

The Design Division manages capital improvement planning and programming related to pavement management, storm drain facilities, and sanitary sewer systems. Additionally, the division provides capital project delivery services for a variety of City projects including transportation, roadways, pedestrian and bicycle, storm drains, sanitary sewers, buildings, libraries, and parks to implement the City’s capital improvement program. The division also coordinates with the Federal Emergency Management Agency on the City’s Community Rating System (CRS) program to maintain the City’s Class 7 rating.
The Field Services Division provides construction management, construction inspection, materials testing, and surveying for capital improvement projects such as pavement rehabilitation, traffic signals, storm and sanitary sewers, parks, building improvements and other public improvements. The Field Services Division also provides construction inspection and coordination for developer/private construction of public improvements within the City’s right-of-way.
The Land & Property Development Division is responsible for providing efficient and effective engineering services to support private development projects during the entitlement, design, and construction phases. The division works closely with customers, developers, utility companies and the community to ensure projects comply with local, state and federal standards. The division is also responsible for reviewing and approving encroachment permits, easements, street/easement abandonments, subdivision maps, processing encroachment agreements, collecting development-related fees, and collaborating with other Public Works divisions, as well as other City departments throughout all project phases. Additionally, the division provides customer counter services to the general public as the City’s permit center.
The Traffic Engineering Division provides traffic engineering, traffic impact analysis reviews, bicycle and pedestrian improvement planning, grant administration, and traffic signal maintenance and operation services for the City. The division also investigates resident/business inquiries related to street parking, traffic calming, intersection control, and bicycling and pedestrian travel on public streets. Finally, this division coordinates with other agencies such as the Valley Transportation Authority, County of Santa Clara Roads and Airports, Caltrans, and the cities of San Jose, Cupertino, and Sunnyvale related to projects, programs, and grant opportunities.
This position may be filled within various divisions of the Public Works, Water & Sewer Utilities, or Electric Utility Departments not included in this listing.

Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• Graduation from high school or tested equivalent; and
• Two (2) years of full-time paraprofessional engineering experience at a level equivalent to City of Santa Clara Engineering Technician including at least one (1) year working with Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) and/or Geographic Information System (GIS) tools and software.
ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTION
Possession of an Associate’s degree or higher OR minor in engineering or GIS may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
• Possession of an Associate’s degree or higher, including satisfactory completion of post-secondary courses in mathematics, engineering, CAD, GIS, and related subjects
• A certificate in CAD
• A certificate in GIS
• Experience using Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems
• Experience using Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
Possession of an appropriate, valid California Class C driver's license is required at time of appointment and for the duration of employment.
