The City of Redwood City invites you to apply for the position of Water Resources Specialist.  There is one current opening in the Public Works Services Department, Water Utilities Division. Incumbents report to the Utilities Field Supervisor and performs field, office and technical work.  Responsibilities for this position include the ability to perform the most complex and skilled functions of the Water Resources Section, including duties related to the Water Conservation, Recycled Water and Cross-Connection Control programs and the functional and technical supervision of Water Resource Technicians.

The City is planning for the replacement and expansion of two of its existing fire stations, modernizing and relocating the facilities to better serve the public.

In support of the San Mateo County automatic aid agreement, all entry level candidates will attend a regional, county-wide, fire academy where they will be introduced to all agencies in the county and rotate through a variety of training sites.  The roughly 12-week academy also includes specialized training depending on candidate certifications.

THE DEPARTMENT

The South San Francisco Public Library is a full-service library committed to delivering quality services to a diverse community.  Library services are available at three sites, including the Main Library (901 Civic Campus Way), the Grand Avenue Library (306 Walnut Avenue) and the Gene Mullin Community Learning Center (520 Tamarack Lane).  Lifelong literacy services are provided by Project Read at the Main Library and the Gene Mullin Community Learning Center (GMCLC).  The City currently has one opening in this classification, for a position in the Youth Services Division providing programs and services at the Main Library.

THE POSITION

The current opening for this position is in Youth Services, with responsibilities overseeing youth programs, collections, and makerspace activities. Under general direction, the Library Program Manager II plans, organizes, manages, supervises and coordinates library-wide activities covering core library services in technical, public, and literacy service areas. Incumbents work under the general direction of the Library Director or Assistant Library Director and exercises direct supervision over supervisory, professional, technical, paraprofessional and clerical staff, and volunteers. Incumbents in this class may serve as Library Director in the department head’s absence; may function as the Library’s project manager for specialized projects; and perform related work as required.

The Library Program Manager is a professional managerial position requiring the possession of a high degree of technical knowledge and supervisory responsibilities and is characterized by the comprehensiveness and complexity of the programs administered. The standard schedule is 9:00 am – 6:00 pm, plus one evening per week (11:00 am – 8:00 pm) and one Saturday per month (9:00 am – 5:30 pm).

The City of Pleasant Hill is currently seeking applicants for Police Officer Trainee. The Trainee position is a non-sworn, entry-level position. As a Trainee, you will be assigned to attend an upcoming POST-approved Police Academy. Upon successful completion of the Academy, you will be eligible for appointment to the position of a sworn Police Officer.

Police Officer Trainee Duties:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Participate in and complete a prescribed law enforcement officer training program for entry level police officers, including training in report writing, laws of arrest and seizure, defensive driving, California Vehicle and Penal Codes, officer survival and physical fitness.
• Prior to entering the law enforcement academy training program, perform a wide variety of police support duties which may include dispatching and records, duties acting as desk officer and/or assisting in planning and research activities.

Experience & Education: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

• Experience: None required, although previous experience in law enforcement is desirable.
• Education:  High school diploma and 60 units of college-level course work. Candidates with an honorable discharge may be credited with up to 15 semester units for a minimum of 3 years of active duty in the U.S. Armed Services (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard).

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, leads and participates in the operation of heavy equipment; performs the full array of duties assigned to classes in the street and sewer maintenance, including skilled and semi-skilled work in streets, sidewalks, curb and gutter, storm drains, catch basins, and sewer collection system construction and repair; leads construction and maintenance crews when assigned; demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures, and work methods associated with assigned duties; performs other related duties as required.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Street, Sewer and Downtown Leadworker is an advanced journey/lead class in the Public Works Department. Incumbents perform a variety of maintenance tasks and perform lead supervisory duties, including assisting in the planning, assigning, and evaluation of the work of subordinates, giving recommendations on discipline, and providing training as required. Incumbents may rotate assignments between program areas. This classification differs from the next higher classification of Street/Sewer Supervisor in that the latter has full supervisory responsibility an assigned construction and maintenance operation.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from the Street and Sewer Supervisors. Exercises functional, technical, and lead supervision over assigned staff.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following)

• Leads, reviews and performs the work of staff engaged in the construction, maintenance, or repair of streets, sewers, and storm drains, curbs, gutters and sidewalks; develops and implements crew assignments; inspects and reviews work methods, performance and quality of work performed, conducts safety and training meetings; provides input and recommendations on employee evaluations; assumes responsibility for the more difficult and complex tasks.

• Recommends and reports service levels to the assigned Supervisor; performs field observations to ensure compliance with department policies, practices, and City ordinances; prepares reports for the Supervisor related to division activities.

• Leads and/or supervises construction and maintenance crews in the full variety of associated projects, assignments and duties; coordinates crew activities with those of other maintenance crews, and other City departments; operates, or directs others in the operation of light to heavy power-driven equipment

• Assists other Public Works divisions when required.

• Oversees and operates trucks, loaders, backhoes, and other light and heavy duty maintenance and construction equipment on construction sites; operates a variety of hand and power tools; inspects tools and equipment for safety and mechanical defects; assists with City sponsored functions; works with a variety of outside contractors; responds to after hours call-outs as assigned.

• Contacts dig alert before excavation and determines estimates of manpower and supplies needed for completion of work orders.

• Prepares and submits computerized and manual records and reports concerning work performed and materials used; provides assistance in the planning of work projects, including the purchase of supplies, materials, and equipment needed to complete projects.

• Demonstrates a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures, and work methods associated with assigned duties; may provide training to training personnel; responds to questions and concerns from the general public; provides customer services and information, as is appropriate, and resolves public service complaints.

• Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies and associations, City management and staff, and the public.

  When assigned to Streets:

• Performs concrete, sidewalk, curb, gutter, and ramp installation and repair; performs temporary and permanent pothole repairs, crack sealing and patching, and all street repairs;

• Lays asphalt; operates concrete saw to prepare cuts for repairs or encroachments;

• Performs concrete work in the installation of new walkways, gutters, catch basins and channels;

• Performs trash and litter pickup on City parking lots and streets as required.

  When assigned to Sewer/Storm:

• Investigates stoppage in sewer lines and storm drains;

• Performs installation or repair of sewer main lines and laterals;

• Unplugs sewer lines as needed; removes and cleans sewer pumps;

• Sends pumps for repair or replaces as needed;

• Operates tools and equipment necessary for removing asphalt and concrete in the performance of sewer installation or repair.

  When Assigned to Downtown Business District: 

• Operates Street Sweeper along with other small equipment such as a mini-sweeper, scrupper, etc.;

• Operates a variety of tools such as a gas blower, cut-off saw, weed eater, Punjar, clay spade, roto hammer, steam power washer, and other powered and hand tools;

• Takes initiative to correct defects and keep areas tidy and clean with minimal direction;

• Proactively maintains and promotes positive working relationship with downtown districts. Resolves customer complaints in a friendly and efficient manner that results in “Quality Community Service” and performs job tasks with minimal impact to the businesses.

• Establishes and maintains good working relationship with the merchants and citizens that will enhance the City’s reputation and foster trust.

 

QUALIFICATIONS (The following are minimal qualifications necessary for entry into the classification.)

Education and/or Experience: Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for a Street, Sewer and Downtown Leadworker. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess the equivalent of three years of responsible experience in street and sewer maintenance work with a minimum of one year at the advanced journey level similar to that of a Street Maintenance Worker in the City of Burlingame with a CWEA Collection Systems Operator Grade I or higher certificate, and a high school diploma or equivalent.

License/Certificate: Possession of a valid Class C driver's license. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid class B California driver’s license with tank and airbrake endorsements. Possession of a Grade I Wastewater Collection System Operator Certificate issued by the California Water Environment Association is required. A CWEA Grade II is required within one year of appointment. Possession of a CPR/1st aid certification and a certification as a Competent Person is required.

If the incumbent is assigned to the Downtown Lead position, a BASMAA Pollution Prevention Training Program for Surface Cleaners “Certificate of Training” is required within 24 months of appointment.

 

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing 90 pounds or more is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold. The incumbent may use chemicals, which may expose the employee to fumes, dust, and air contaminants, and be exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards. Must be certified by a physician as fit to wear a respirator (must be prepared to shave on demand). The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb ladders, work at heights over 10 feet, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles and heavy equipment, and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions. The incumbent is required to respond to weekends, after hours emergency call-outs and perform routine standby duties (incumbent in the Downtown Lead Worker position is required to work a morning swing shift and will not be eligible to participate in the standby duty program for on-call duties on week nights and weekends unless otherwise approved by the Department Director).

THE POSITION
Under supervision, performs sub-professional engineering office work to assist the Public Works Engineering Division teams on programs and projects that may include engineering permits, land development plan checks, procedural and standards research and development, record and asset management, traffic research and field crew assistance.

IDEAL CANDIDATE SECTION
The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in basic engineering principles and demonstrate proficiency in modern drafting and design practices. They should be familiar with engineering office tools and computer-aided drafting software such as AutoCAD, as well as design and GIS mapping systems.

We are seeking someone who is detail-oriented, highly organized, adaptable, and self-motivated, with excellent verbal and written communication skills. The candidate should be able to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting.

The ideal candidate will have willingness to learn about construction management and inspection procedures and the ability to perform accurate mathematical calculations and drafting work. They should be capable of collecting and recording engineering field data with a high level of detail and maintaining thorough documentation. Proficiency in modern office software tools, including PowerPoint, to create professional presentations is essential. The candidate must be able to prepare clear and concise written correspondence, including responses to public inquiries, and demonstrate the ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions. Excellent customer service skills and the ability to work collaboratively with contractors and the public are important. Flexibility to work varied hours as needed to meet project demands is also required.

TYPICAL DUTIES (may include but are not limited to the following):

• Performs a wide variety of responsible sub-professional engineering work including assisting engineering staff with general clerical, administrative, and technical tasks for public works projects
• Performs electronic document filing, enters data and creates reports in various software applications

QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Experience: None 

Education: Current student enrolled in a university/college pursuing an undergraduate degree (Junior or Senior) or graduate degree in Engineering, preferably in Civil Engineering.

Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid Class “C” California Driver’s License is required.

 ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Redwood City Public Works Services Department invites you to apply for the position of Utilities Field Supervisor in the Wastewater Division. The Wastewater Division operates and maintains the City’s sanitary sewer collection system and municipal stormwater system. Under general direction, the Utilities Field Supervisor plans, organizes, supervises, trains, and evaluates the work of assigned crews engaged in maintenance, repair, installation, construction, and regulatory compliance duties within the sanitary sewer collection system and municipal stormwater system.  Primary duties include supervising and evaluating performance of assigned staff, scheduling maintenance and repair work, responding to customer inquiries and requests, and traveling among various worksites to direct, supervise, and evaluate work performed in the field. This position is distinguished from the Public Works Superintendent in that the latter is responsible for the administration and management of a large operational division.
