These positions are grant-funded, seasonal positions assigned to a 40-hour work week. These positions are returning to the fire district in 2025, and we’ll be hiring three people to operate the chipping crew.  This position is expected to be active from approximately May through November.  The actual start and end dates will be dependent on weather and snow conditions and may be extended beyond 6 months, but no more than 9 months from the employment start date.  The eligibility list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies.  

The Chipping Crew Members work under the direct supervision of the Division Chief of Fire and Life Safety or their designee.  

The primary purpose of this crew is to operate a residential chipping program for the local community. This includes responding to chipping requests, traveling to those addresses with a truck and chipper, chipping the material, ensuring a clean site upon leaving, potentially hauling and dumping the material at a temporary holding site, assisting with loading, and ensuring activities are adequately tracked. The applicant must be comfortable working in outdoor environments under varying weather conditions and lifting objects frequently up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.  Chipping crew members will also assist with community workdays utilizing the truck and chipper or assisting with cutting and hauling combustible materials and filling green waste dumpsters.

The Newark Recreation and Community Services Department is looking for Lifeguards for our fantastic swim lessons and aquatic programs at the Silliman Activity & Family Aquatic Center. We are looking for positive, patient, motivated, self-driven individuals that have a passion for working with children and wish to make a difference! Those that are successful in the application review will be invited to attend an in-person interview. RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Under direct supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator, Lifeguards will ensure the safety of facility patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies
• Maintaining constant surveillance of patrons in the facility
• Acting immediately and appropriately to ensure the safety of patrons in the event of an emergency/Providing emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services
• Performing various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility
• Having a thorough knowledge of rescue techniques

DEFINITION:

Under administrative direction from the City Engineer, supervises the day to day responsibilities of the Engineering Division; performs professional civil engineering design work; handles work processes associated with functions assigned to the division; performs related duties as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:

The Principal Civil Engineer is a management-level classification within the Public Works Department’s Engineering Division. Incumbents direct engineering operations, staff, and/or consultants within assigned program areas – including capital improvement projects, development and permitting, traffic and transportation, and stormwater management – to support the achievement of division goals. The work requires a high degree of independence, initiative, and sound judgment in applying established policies and broad guidelines.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

• Plans, organizes, directs, and coordinates the work of professional and technical engineering staff.
• Assists in preparation of budget requests for division and monitors expenditures; screens and selects staff, supervises, trains and prepares performance evaluations for professional and technical staff, and recommends salary increases.
• Reviews non-routine projects submitted to the division and determines processing requirements, schedules, order of priority, possible problem areas, and assigns necessary related tasks to staff members, noting any special treatment to be given.
• Periodically reviews progress of staff on assigned projects and checks completed work products including reports, engineering designs, and completeness of construction inspections for final approval by the City Engineer.
• Participates in the selection of consulting engineers, negotiates fees, drafts agreements, outlines project objectives and City requirements, provides project management such as administration of related contracts, and reviews and recommends approval of engineering designs.
• Conducts field inspections of projects in progress; negotiates and recommends approval of contract change orders which cannot be handled by subordinates; authorizes changes in planned construction when warranted by field conditions.
• Assists in preparation of operating budget for Engineering Division and participates in budget review conferences; assists in preparation of capital improvement budget for City’s proposed construction programs.
• Reviews capital needs, arranges for cost estimates, and recommends priorities.
• Supervises the processing of encroachment into the public right of way and assists in the plans, development contracts and special agreements, and meets with developers, engineers, and representatives of public and private agencies to resolve problems.
• Under the direction of the City Engineer, administers all aspects of assessment district formation including coordination with involved parties, review of plans and specifications, and preparation of related reports.
• Conducts or directs special studies as required; oversees and participates in review of all private development proposals including subdivision maps; supervises the preparation, updating, and maintenance of city maps and records.
• Attends meetings and makes presentations and serves as support staff to City Council, City Planning Commission, and other public and private groups as required by the City of Union City Engineer.
• Act as the City Engineer in their absence.

Compensation:

Police Officer Trainee:   $6,668.53 - $6,997.47 monthly
Police Officer:  $9,113.87 - $10,998.00 monthly

This recruitment is open to those individuals with no prior law enforcement experience and have not received POST certified police academy training.   If you are a POST certified academy graduate, please apply to the recruitment titled Police Officer (Academy Graduate or Participant).

THE POSITION:  This is a trainee level classification which provides transition into the position of Police Officer.  A Police Officer Trainee is hired into this civilian position for the period prior to and during the time they are assigned to a Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified police academy.  The police academy has an expected duration of approximately 6 months.  Upon successful completion of training at an academy and upon the availability of a Police Officer position, Police Officer Trainees are sworn in and appointed to the classification of Police Officer.  The Police Officer Trainee is represented by SEIU Local 1021 and benefits are limited to those of a civilian employee.

Upon appointment to Police Officer, duties may include a wide variety of law enforcement assignments such as: patrol, traffic control, criminal and juvenile investigation, and radio communication.  These require operating a patrol car or motorcycle, arresting and citing violators of laws, writing reports, serving warrants, testifying in court and providing information to the public.  Please see the City of Hayward's website for a complete job description.

THE POSITION:

 

The City of Hayward is excited to announce its recruitment for the position of Lateral Communications Operator. 

DEFINITION

Under general supervision from the Communications Supervisor, the Communications Operator operates a computer aided dispatch system receiving calls and dispatching police, fire or other City services.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a journey technical level position in which incumbents are expected to independently perform the full range of duties assigned. This class is distinguished from the Communications Supervisor in that the latter provides technical and functional supervision over assigned communication personnel.

THE DEPARTMENT

The Communications Center in the Support Services Division of the Hayward Police Department is responsible for dispatching both Police and Fire Services throughout the City of Hayward. The Hayward Police Department is one of 18 CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement) accredited police departments in California and is committed to maintaining CALEA's high standards and broadly recognized excellence.
The Communications Center is frequently the first point of contact that a member of the public will have when requesting assistance from the City of Hayward. The information gathered by the communications operator during this contact is critical to a positive outcome. The Communications Center consists of six (6) stations with each communications operator assigned to a specific job.

Minimum Qualifications

LATERAL REQUIREMENTS:

Experience: Two (2) years of experience as a public safety dispatcher for a Public Safety Answering Point, including heavy public contact while performing multiple tasks and using a computer-aided dispatch system.

Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.

Licenses and Certificates: Completion of the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Public Safety Dispatcher course is highly desirable.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Typing Certificate: A typing certificate with 35 net words per minute 

1. Certificates will be accepted from a public school, business school or temporary agency; certificates from Internet testing services and/or home computer CD testing will NOT be accepted.
2. Typing certificate (or signed statement on official letterhead from the testing agency) must be dated no earlier than six (6) months prior to the date of the application filing.
3. Typing certificate (or signed letter) must state all of the following information:

· Five (5)-minute timed typing test.
· Gross typing speed in words per minute.
· Gross number of errors.
· Net words per minute

Under general supervision of the Chief Building/Fire Code Official or designee, performs complex and detailed inspections of structures for conformance to codes, ordinances, approved plans, calculations and specifications; reads and interprets construction drawings and specifications for compliance with codes, ordinances, energy and disabled access requirements; conducts investigations of suspected violations of the Municipal and Building codes, including code enforcement; may assist in training other Building Inspectors and providing direction to other technical and/or clerical staff, including temporary; employees. ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

• Patrol:

• Respond to emergency calls; administer first aide.
• Investigate reported crimes, suspicious activity, and traffic accidents.
• Investigate unattended deaths.
• Conduct the collection and preservation of evidence at crime scenes.
• Patrol assigned sectors in a marked vehicle to provide preventive and enforcement action.
• Assist citizens in distress and provide information regarding police function/operations.
• Quell domestic disturbances and other disputes.

• Perform selective enforcement of traffic violations at identified problem areas; use LIDAR, or other designated equipment.

• Conduct investigations for hit and run, injury, and fatal accidents including accident reconstruction.
• Plan, coordinate, and supervise special event traffic control.
• Advise and consult with City personnel on traffic issues.
• Present lectures and discussions to high school students.
• Conduct training for officers on changes in traffic law and reporting techniques.
• Conduct inspections of commercial vehicles for safety, weight, size, and load violations.

• School Resource:

• Investigate and apprehend persons who commit crimes on campus.
• Monitor gang activity as it related to criminal activity both on and off campus.
• Monitor bus stop and other campus areas where potential or ongoing problems exist.
• Act as the liaison between school staff and police department.
• Conduct formal presentations for students and staff; engage in informal discussions of law enforcement with students and staff.
• Coordinate and supervise security at school activities. Refer students to appropriate agencies for assistance.
• Coordinate and implement school fingerprinting program.
• Make home visits to truants; counsel students on minor law infractions.

• Investigate aggravated, serial, or major crimes; follow up on cases initiated by Patrol.
• Develop leads through informants, police sources, citizens, and/or evidence.
• Interview witnesses; interrogate suspects.
• Collect, preserve, and arrange for proper identification of evidence.
• Prepare and serve search and arrest warrants; conduct search and seizure assignments.
• Review reports for trends; identify suspects and crime patterns.
