DEFINITION

Library Assistant I: Under direct supervision, performs technical and clerical library work related to the variety of activities associated with the acquisition, processing and circulation of library materials and assistance to patrons in the use of materials, services and library computers. This class is distinguished from the Library Assistant II by performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the Library Assistant series.

 

Library Assistant II: Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of technical and clerical library work related to such activities as the acquisition, processing, cataloging, and circulation of library materials and assistance to patrons in the use of materials, services and computers. This is a full journey level position within the Library Assistant series and is distinguished from the Library Assistant I by the performance of the full range of duties with only occasional instruction or assistance. Employees in this class may be assigned to work without direct supervision in a small branch and may be directed to provide technical and clerical supervision over less experienced staff.

 

Under the flexible staffing concept, Library Assistant II positions that become vacant may reasonably be filled at the Library Assistant I level for training purposes.

 

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Library Assistant I’s work with an automated system to order, check out and receive materials, register patrons, and collect fees and fines; process and repair books and other library materials; assist in the maintenance of manual and automated files; answer routine inquires; assist patrons in using library computers and in locating print and non-print materials; perform routine clerical tasks such as typing, filing, and answering the telephone; assist with programming, displays, and special projects; may retrieve and shelve materials; and perform other related duties as required.

 

Library Assistant II’s may perform Library Assistant I duties but will also participate in the creation and maintenance of manual and automated files; assist in the preparation and processing of orders for library materials; catalog materials; compile data and prepare summary activity reports; answer basic reference questions, referring higher level or more complicated questions to appropriate staff; locate books and other materials using indexes and catalogs; assist in formulating and enforcing local library policies and procedures; troubleshoot and correct computer problems; may assign routine tasks and provide instruction to aides and pages; and perform other related duties as required.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: Library materials, services, and terminology; modern office procedures and methods including filing and use of personal computers; customer service skills; and basic business arithmetic at the Library Assistant I level. Library organization and familiarity with computer applications and automated library systems at the Library Assistant II level.

 

Ability to: Library Assistant I level: Learn basic library conventions, practices, and methods including the Dewey Decimal System and automated library systems; interact with and relate effectively to a variety of people of different ages, socioeconomic status, and ethnic background; maintain an appropriate public service demeanor and positive customer service interactions; communicate clearly both orally and in writing; make sound judgments and decisions within established guidelines; perform assigned tasks with speed and accuracy; understand and carry out both oral and written instructions; work with numbers and alphabet and count cash accurately; keyboard at a speed necessary for successful job performance; learn to operate and troubleshoot library equipment including computers, copy machines, microform readers, typewriters and printers; interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to customers, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

 

Additionally, at the Library Assistant II level,: Work with complex library conventions, practices and methods including the Dewey Decimal System and automated bibliographic and circulation systems; perform a variety of library technical and clerical work with speed and accuracy under a minimum of supervision; operate and troubleshoot library equipment including computers, copy machines, microform readers, typewriters and printers; learn a variety of computer software applications and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

 

Physical capability to: perform such physical tasks as lifting and moving library materials, stooping, reaching, and walking up and down stairs.

 

Experience: 

Library Assistant I: Equivalent of one year of full-time employment performing general clerical or related work, desirably in a public library or other organization requiring considerable public contact. College training may be substituted for the required work experience on the basis of 25 college semester units being equivalent to six months of experience.

Library Assistant II: Two years of employment, using automated, on-line library systems, at the Library Assistant I level or equivalent, desirably in a public library. Part time experience may be qualifying and will be prorated to full time equivalent.

 

Education: 

Library Assistant I: High school graduation or the equivalent. Clerical or specialized college level courses in library science, computing, or business desirable.

 

Library Assistant II: High school graduation or equivalent and possession of an AA degree or completion of the equivalent of two years (50 semester units) of college level courses. Library experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

 

License:

The Position 

The City of Thousand Oaks is seeking an innovative and proactive Deputy Community Development Director – Operations with a forward-thinking perspective who will: 

• Oversee a portion of the Planning Division, code compliance, open space planning, CDBG/housing, and  administrative services. Manages administrative support to the department and establishes methods, procedures, and standards for office services.  

• Manage department-wide special projects and process improvement initiatives, including e-planning and e-permitting through a new land management system implementation,  

• Develops and implements organization development programs, department’s training programs, and coordinates agency personnel related issues, which may include payroll. 

• Develops and administers the operating budget for the department.

THE POSITION

What You’ll Do

The Public Works Supervisor will organize and supervise work crews engaged in the maintenance and repair of streets, traffic markings, signs, signals, street lights, drains, storm pump, stormwater conveyance systems and sanitary pumps, lagoons, dams, creeks and ditches; to provide technical staff assistance, including safety compliance and implementation. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Recommend and assist in the implementation of program goals and objectives; standard operating procedures; establish schedules and methods for street, traffic and stormwater conveyance systems maintenance and repair; safety compliance and implementation; implement policies and procedures.
• Organize and supervise crews of skilled and semi-skilled personnel in the repair and maintenance of streets and stormwater conveyance systems, including street resurfacing, streetlights, traffic signals and street markings and signs, repairing and patching; street cleaning; sidewalk, curb and gutter removal and replacement; sewer cleaning and repair; weed control and storm drain cleaning maintenance.
• Maintain and interpret time, material and equipment use records; determine and implement adjustments to optimize the effectiveness of the maintenance system.
• Investigate complaints and recommend corrective actions as necessary to resolve complaints.
• Fully utilize the computerized work systems in accordance with workflow processes.
• Participate in selecting, training, motivating, counseling and evaluating staff; participate in monitoring employee performance objectives; prepare employee performance reviews; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures.
• Coordinate safety training and support Department safety programs including preparation and updating of City safety practices, standard operating procedures and training materials. May be asked to conduct specific safety trainings depending on training and experience. These activities may be required in both the Engineering & General Services and Environmental Services Divisions as requested by the Director.
• Inspect the work of crews while in progress; provide advice and assistance to subordinate supervisors and lead workers.
• Assist in preparing cost estimates for street, sewer, traffic and drainage system maintenance and repair activities; make plans and sketches for minor street maintenance and repair projects.
• Assist in coordinating street, sewer, traffic and drainage system maintenance activities with other City departments, divisions, and sections and with outside agencies.
• Participate in budget preparation and administration; prepare cost estimates for budget recommendations; submit justifications for needed equipment and materials; monitor and control expenditures.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Redwood City invites you to apply for the full-time (38 hours per week) position of Senior Library Assistant.  The Senior Library Assistant performs a wide array of high-level library work and customer service. The current vacancy is based at our Downtown Library, performing a wide variety of technical library work, providing services for children, adults and families, and administering the day-to-day activities of the library.  The candidate may also be assigned to work at other Redwood City Public Library locations.  This position requires work during the day, evenings and a weekend rotation (both Saturday and Sunday).  We may use the eligibility list created from this recruitment process to fill any positions that occur in any Redwood City Public Library location, during the life of the eligibility list. THE POSITION

The City of San Mateo is seeking a Per Diem Human Resources Technician providing a wide variety of technical human resource work in a variety of program areas including benefit administration; recruitment and selection; compensation; human resources information systems database analysis and report writing, and to do related work as required. This position receives general supervision from the HR Director or Senior HR Analysts.

EXAMPLE DUTIES

• Prepare and maintain personnel records.
• Write, edit and prepare digital and print communications materials.
• Assist in the recruitment process by preparing and distributing job announcements, composing, and placing ads, composing and recording announcements for the job hotline, updating and monitoring recruitment information on the City’s web site, screening applications, and answering inquiries from applicants.
• Work with departments in coordinating examination schedules and locations; prepare necessary correspondence for the examinations; notify candidates; enlist the services of examination board members; assemble and mail packets to oral board members.
• Process, update, and maintain invoices and accounts payable.
• Gather and assemble data and prepare routine reports; maintain a variety of records and files.
• Screen calls and visitors, referring inquiries as appropriate, and respond to requests for information regarding general personnel matters.
• Use specialized technical equipment or computer programs.

JOB RELATED SKILLS & ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

• Personnel policies and procedures relating to recruitment, selection, benefit administration, compensation, human resources information systems, and related areas.
• English usage, grammar, spelling and punctuation.
• Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.

Ability to:

• Plan, coordinate, and organize work to meet deadlines.
• Compose routine correspondence demonstrating good English skills in spelling, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation.
• Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
• Understand, interpret, and apply rules, regulations and memoranda of understanding.
• Establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
• Operate standard office machines including personal computer, and calculator.
• Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records and reports.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

• Two years of increasingly responsible clerical or account clerical experience, preferably in a human resources environment.
• Equivalent to a high school diploma. Additional specialized training in public administration, human resources management, business administration or a related field is desirable.
