The City of San Mateo is building a cross-functional team tasked with upgrading the City’s 15.7 MGD conventional activated sludge plant with new liquids treatment process facilities, including headworks, primary treatment, five-stage biological nutrient removal/membrane bioreactor (BNR/MBR) process, biological and chemically enhanced treatment (BioACTIFLO) process, and other general plant upgrades, including odor control to serve the new facilities. What You’ll Do

• Operate wastewater treatment facilities to control flow and processing of wastewater, sludge and effluent; monitor gauges, meters and control panels; observe variation in operating conditions, interpreting meter and gauge readings and test results to determine processing requirements.
• Operate valves and gates, start and stop pumps, engines and electric motors to control and adjust flow and treatment processes, operate and maintain boilers, perform routine maintenance work on valves, tanks, related equipment and facilities.
• Monitor, adjust and troubleshoot as needed plant operational processes utilizing data-driven technology, such as the SCADA or PCS system.
• Fully utilize the computerized work systems in accordance with work flow processes.
• Operate treatment plant vehicles and stationary machinery as required.
• Collect samples and perform routine laboratory tests and analyses.

These positions require shift work, nights, weekends, holidays with on-call emergency response 24 hours per day. However, along with this challenge is the benefit of working a 12-hour shift that results in a very favorable work/life balance and requires the minimum commuting days as compared to other standard 8-hour shifts.

Who You Are

The WWTP Operator in Training:

• You have graduated from high school or equivalent, and have six educational units of math or science course work, and six months experience in handling mechanical equipment and tools.
• You have up to 18 months to obtain a Grade I WWTP Certificate to promote to WWTP Operator I.

The WWTP Operator I:

• You have graduated from high school or equivalent and have six months experience in handling mechanical equipment tools.
• You possess a Grade I WWTP Certificate and work under direct supervision of the WWTP Shift Supervisor or WWTP Operator II and perform more routine operation work.
• You may be promoted to WWTP Operator II upon obtaining a Grade II WWTP Certificate and completing qualifying training.

The WWTP Operator II

• You possess a Grade II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate issued by the State of California.
• You have graduated from High school or equivalent and a minimum of one year of experience in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant.

Hiring Bonus

Applicants hired meeting the criteria for an experienced lateral dispatcher could be eligible for:

1. A $15,000 hiring bonus over a 3-year timeline upon 1) completion of training, 2) completion of probation, and 3) 36-months of employment with the City of San Mateo Police Department.
    
2. 40 hours of vacation time upon completion of training with proof of leave balances from prior agency.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Redwood City Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department is looking for enthusiastic high school students to train and work within our After School Sports Program as a flag football, volleyball, or basketball official. On game days, youth referees will be partnered with experienced officials that will provide training and mentorship. Youth officials will typically work two days a week. Game days and times are Monday through Thursday, from 3:45pm-7pm.

Official’s shirt, whistle, and training resources are provided. All training is provided by the Silicon Valley Sports Officials Association. Training dates will vary based on sport and season and will include classroom and hands-on instruction.

Flag Football and Volleyball Training Season - APPLICATIONS DUE BY AUGUST 1

• Training - Mid-August – September
• League games begin the last week of September – second week of November

Basketball Training Season - APPLICATIONS DUE BY SEPTEMBER 15

• Training - Mid-September - November
• League Games begin the first week of December – third week of March

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Attendance at all training sessions
• Knowledgeable of the rules and regulations of assigned sport program.
• Officiate After School Sports scrimmages and games.
• Exercise sound judgment in addressing behavior problems.
• Establish and maintain a respectful and courteous working relationship with coaches, participants, and parents contacted in the course of work.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Redwood City Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department is looking for enthusiastic people to work within our After School Sports and Mobile Recreation programs operated out of Red Morton Community Center. The hours of this position could be Monday through Friday, from 3:30pm-8:30pm during the school year, but nighttime and weekend hours will be mandatory depending on special events and program needs. During the spring and summer, duties will include, but are not limited to, serving as an assistant coach within our Junior Dribblers basketball program and assisting with mobile recreation activities at various parks and school sites. This position will work under the gym/field supervisor and report directly to the After School Sports Coordinator.

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following: work as a field attendant in our flag football leagues; work as a scorekeeper in our volleyball and basketball leagues; possess a firm understanding of league rules and policies; ensure that games and practices operated in a safe, inclusive environment; report any issues immediately to gym/ field supervisor and/or After School Sports Coordinator; address all parent and coaches in a professional manner; maintain and care for all sports and mobile rec equipment; follow departmental and city-wide rules and regulations as they relate to the supervision of sports program and general work procedures; assist with other programs within the Parks & Recreation Department, including but not limited to, facilities, special events, and other youth programs.

• 26 City-owned buildings/facilities and their grounds
• A fleet of over 250 vehicles and pieces of equipment
• 97 miles of streets
• Drinking water delivery for 16,000 customers
• Flood protection and stormwater management programs particularly along the San Francisco Bay, San Francisquito Creek and Atherton Channel
• 14 parks, 2 open spaces, 14 playgrounds, 2 dog parks, 9 sports fields, and 14 tennis/pickleball courts
• Efforts to preserve and expand the urban canopy, including 20,000 public trees
• Multimodal transportation services including 42 traffic signals, safe routes to schools and citywide shuttle programs. 

The department has nearly a $40 million operating budget supported by over 25 different special/dedicated funding sources for the varied programs and services provided to the community. In addition, the City has an approximate $100 million capital improvement program, in part due to a successful track record in pursuing grants from a variety of local, state and federal sources. Some of the exciting efforts on the horizon include efforts to protect the San Francisco Bay shoreline and adjacent community from sea level rise; efforts to eliminate the City’s reliance on fossil fuels through building and fleet electrification; making investments in transportation safety through strategic quick-build projects and large infrastructure changes like a pedestrian/bicycle undercrossing at Caltrain; and ensuring the equitable delivery of services throughout the entire city in alignment with the goals and programs developed as part of the city’s first environmental justice element underway.

The Senior Engineer will lead capital improvement projects under the supervision of the City Engineer or Public Works Director.
